Fallen fragments of the west window at English Martyrs church photographed on April 11th 2010, The defective upper central transom broke free the previous morning, sending the stained glass/dalle de verre panel above it crashing to the ground where it shattered on the grass below.
It is now clear that the major factor in the declining condition of this window is the poor load bearing capacity of the concrete transoms and their weak connection to the main mullions. The lowest row of panels are bowed and sagging precariously as a result of the weak structure supporting them. Thus the poor condition of the window is as much a failure of the architectural design as much as the nature of the glazing.
Hillmorton's Roman Catholic church of the English Martyrs was built in 1965 (architects Sandy & Norris) with a square core surmounted by an expanse if coloured glass on all four sides forming a lantern, and capped by a concrete vaulted ceiling. Below it was envisaged that four limbs would sprout from this nucleus to form a cross, though in the event only one was built to the north, which served as the nave until the church was re-orientated in the early 1980s when a new sanctuary extension was added to the east.(the old nave being walled off and serving as the church hall ever since). The remaining two temporary walls below the vast windows were finished in brick only in 1990.
The major artistic feature of the building is the enormous expanse of stained glass by noted Welsh artist Jonah Jones, executed in the dalle de verre ('slab of glass') technique popular in the 1950s & 60s, with heavy chunks of glass set in a resin matrix (in place of traditional lead, which would be insufficient to hold such thick pieces of glass). The design of the four windows is abstract, though each incorporates a subtle crown of thorns motif in red glass.
However, times have changed and the dalle de verre technique has not stood the test of time well. Though the east and north windows remain in sound condition those on the south and particularly the west have suffered from the effects of heat expansion which has caused several of the glass pieces to detach from their resin matrix, whilst in the worst cases the resin structure itself is failing, in places cracked and bowing dangerously. Finding a remedy to these problems seems to be frought with difficulties and currently the future of these windows (the largest work ever undertaken by the artist Jonah Jones) hangs in the balance.
Personally I hope they can be saved, admittedly I have an emotional attachment having grown up here, but I also consider them a rare period piece, a bold expression of the kind of optimism and vision that gave us Coventry Cathedral (a mere 12 miles away) and Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, both of which are accepted as iconic statements of their time, despite the general unpopularity of the architecture of the time.
Any information on how to proceed with saving these precarious artworks will be most gratefully recieved.
For more information on the artist Jonah Jones see the following website dedicated to his life and work

This is owned by the same fellow who owns the KM-21 mandolin in the last post. I've worked on a lot of KG-21s like this guy, but this one was the first one to arrive in "train-wreck" condition. I do like these guitars a lot, though -- they're L-00 in size and shape so they're extremely comfortable in the lap. Their tone is actually just as warm and chunky as their larger 16" Kalamazoo archtop brethren, too, thanks to a deeper side depth than the average Gibson-made archtop.
My favorite versions of these are the ones from about this date, too, because the late-'30s and early-'40s models sport the more "medium-round-C" neck profiles found on '40s and '50s Gibsons than the big, harder-V shapes found on most Kalamazoo products. Bracing on these pressed-top Kalamazoo models is interesting because they're heavily x-braced with a ladder brace through the middle of the main X. Despite looking like it would sound like garbage, this bracing pattern gives these guitars that reliable lower-mids-emphasis, choppy grunt that many carved-top archtops dream of.
Work included: a fret level/dress, sorting-out absurdly-split and shifted (we're talking more than 1" overlaps and out-of-position, worn-edges cracks) side and back cracks, bracing repairs (re-repairs considering the damage inside), one crack repair to the top, cleaning, and a good setup. Despite having to epoxy the lower arms of the main x-bracing in place (trust me, I avoided this like the plague), and allowing the major crack repairs to be "good enough," the guitar turned-out an awesome player, so I can't complain too much!
Setup: action is spot-on at 3/32" EA and 1/16" DGBE at the 12th fret, strung with 54w-12 gauges. The neck is straight and the frets still have decent height left to them, though they are the original, slim, low old Gibson frets.
Scale length: 24 13/16"
Nut width: 1 11/16"
String spacing at nut: 1 1/2"
String spacing at bridge: 2 1/16"
Body length: 19 1/4"
Lower bout width: 14 3/4"
Waist width: 8 1/4"
Upper bout width: 10 1/8"
Side depth at endpin: 4 3/8"
Top wood: solid spruce
Back/sides wood: solid mahogany
Neck wood: mahogany
Bracing type: x-braced plus ladder-brace in middle ("star" braced?)
Fretboard: rosewood, pearl dots
Bridge: rosewood, adjustable, Gibson stairstep style
Neck feel: medium-bigger C-shape, ~10-12" board radius
Condition notes: lots of bad, ugly, not-quite-matched-up cracks on the sides (plus at the endblock) and on the back. From the front she looks good, though! Everything on the guitar is original save for a new endpin/strap button plus heel strap button. The tuner buttons and one tuner shaft are replacements, as well, and I added side dots. The finish shows plenty of wear and tear but still looks nice. There's a lot of pickwear near the fretboard extension on the top.
This is a photograph from the seventh annual Donadea 50KM Ultramarathon which was held in Donadea Forest, Donadea, Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Saturday 13th February 2016 at 10:00. The race was also an International Association of Ultrarunners Silver Label Event and the Athletics Association of Ireland (AAI) National 50KM Championships. The race completes 10 loops of a very well known 5KM trail around the circumference of the forest. Most of this trail is in very good condition with good conditions underfoot for the entire 5KM stretch. The start-finish area is located close to the coffee shop area in the center of the park beside the now ruined and abandoned Donadea Castle. This year, like all previous events, was a fantastic event with great support around the course for the athletes. However the structure of the course with the repeated loops makes a great atmosphere for the runners themselves with great camaraderie being shown amongst all of the competitors. This is one of the most popular 50KM races in Ireland. A garmin GPS link is available here [connect.garmin.com/activity/70206204]

Where is Donadea?. Donadea Forest Park is situated in rural north Kildare and is approximately 640 acres in size. The amenities at the forest include good walking trails, a diversity of natural habitats, a walled stream, a large natural lake, and the ruins of Donadea castle. The Park is a designated National Heritage Area. The basic designation for wildlife is the Natural Heritage Area (NHA). This is an area considered important for the habitats present or which holds species of plants and animals whose habitat needs protection. It is a special occasion to allow the 50KM to be held in this environment.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
Don't like your photograph here?
That's OK! We understand!
If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.
I want to tell people about these great photographs!
Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

You can never deny how important an air conditioning system is especially on a hot Toronto summer day. A perfectly working air conditioner works day in and day out to make sure we feel cool and comfortable throughout the warm season. Unfortunately, there are times when the air conditioner starts acting up and emits warm air instead of the cool air we have become acclimated to. An A/C blowing out warm air may be due to a bad compressor or your unit has run low on refrigerant. A warm-air-emitting air conditioner may not only be the sign of a failing cooling unit. It can be as worse as having an A/C that spews out a horrifyingly stinking breeze.
An unpleasant smell coming from an air conditioner is a sign that something is not right with your unit – even if it still gives you the cool air that you expect. If you are faced with a dilemma like this, it may be because of the following reasons which will ultimately demand for a professional repair.
Your A/C Isn’t the Right Size
The size of your air conditioning unit matters – a lot. Remember that your A/C not only cools down your home’s temperature, but it also plays a very important role in dehumidifying. As it takes the heat from the air, it also gets rid of moisture. And while a bigger air conditioning unit for a relatively small space may give you better cooling effects, it won’t help much with the dehumidification process. When an A/C is too big for a specific room, it doesn’t do a full cycle which means it is also unable to effectively remove the humidity from the air. Air conditioning
With an A/C that is too large for the zone it’s cooling, this becomes a breeding ground for particles that can have a direct effect on your health. During the hot summer days when the humidity level is high, mold and mildew can stick to the dampness of the air conditioner and eventually grow on the unit’s components. These will eventually spread and be emitted together with the air that you breathe. Not only will you be experiencing an unhealthy dose of cold air but you will also be smelling something unpleasant. You can correct this problem by either running a dehumidifier or changing your air conditioner to a size and make that is suitable for your room.
Your Condensation Drain is Clogged
The dehumidifying functionality of an air conditioner certainly has positive effects on the kind of air we require; however, this can also contribute to the smelly breeze you get from your unit. That nasty smell may come from a clogged condensation drain that becomes a breeding ground for mold and mildew. This happens when the frost layer on the evaporator coil starts to condensate and eventually drains into a pan located outside the house. This pan can get easily clogged and so the condensation process isn’t completed so the mold that has started to grow in the pan gets distributed in the rooms of your home in the form of a dirty sock stench.
You can simply drain the pan with a sharp object. In case it doesn’t fix the issue you have with your air conditioning unit, you may need to call in the experts so they can assess what needs to be done.
You Have Dirty Internal Coils
An air conditioner consists of several coils that are used to heat and cool the air before it gets redistributed to your home. One of the possible reasons why your unit discharges that stench is because of dirt and bacteria-infested internal coils. Because the air passes through these coils, it picks up the foul odor and that is what you smell. The easiest way to clean internal coils is to turn your A/C off and spray the coils with compressed air. It is also advisable to do the same before using it for the summer to clean the dirt that may have built up on the unit.
Your Filters are Clogged
Filters play the role of cleaning the air in the air conditioner before it gets distributed to your home. If filters are not regularly changed and cleaned, these can get clogged and be embedded with dirt and bacteria-infested particles that produce the foul smell that the air can pick up. It is recommended that you change your filters at least once a month to avoid the stinky smell and prevent your A/C from working harder than it should.
You Have Dead Animals in Your A/C Unit
What could possibly be the worst reason why your A/C is sending out that horrid smell? Dead animals. It could be a rat, a possum, or a bird. Any of these can die in the outside unit or even in the vents. It is important that you call in some professionals to remove dead animals especially in the vents to make sure that the unit gets cleared of these expired creatures and avoid possible health risks. Once your air conditioning system is free from these animals, you can enjoy a comfortable temperature without the annoying smell.
Note that air conditioners don’t normally smell. If yours does, you might just have a valid reason to call for a professional air conditioning repair.

We pleased to say this isn't one of ours! Another example of how choosing the wrong air conditioning contractor can lead to a mess! This is an R22 Mitsubishi Electric Air Conditioning unit from 1994 which is being replaced by an R410A system. Still on the positive side it does prove how long air conditioning systems can last, even when badly installed. Still, if this was your business or home it certainly doesn't portray a very good image.
If you have an R22 Air Conditioning systems that's either faulty or simply requires replacing for an new R410A energy efficient system please email us at sales@nottinghamairconditioning.co.uk, call us on 0800 849 9490 or visit our website www.nottinghamairconditioning.co.uk
