The lights on this beautiful building are constantly in motion and changing colors. The odd thing about it is that depending on where you stand, there always seems to be a portion of the lights that is dark, which is why there is less than a full reflection here. No matter where I positioned myself, there was always a dark section either on the building or the reflection or both.

Frankfurt is one of the few European cities with a large cluster of high rise building in its downtown area; in many other European cities, skyscraper construction was not well received in the past due to the historical value of existing buildings. For this reason, Frankfurt is sometimes referred to as "Mainhattan" (a portmanteau of the local Main river and Manhattan), and Chicago am Main.

Jacob played twice in the Elbphiharmonie concert hall in Hamburg over the weekend. It is a truly amazing place!
Germany, Hamburg, "Planten un Blomen" is an approximately 47 hectare park in the centre of Hamburg.
The name "Planten un Blomen" is in the North German dialect & it means “Plants & Flowers”. The founder & first director of the botanical garden in the Hamburg walls, Johann G. C. Lehmann, planted a plane tree in November 1821, the first tree in the park. The tree is located still today at the Dammtor train station entrance between the large tropical glasshouse & the Congress Centre, the tree is a natural symbol representing the beginnings of the gardens.
The park is a popular destination for the inhabitants in the Hamburg metropolitan area & tourists; it is part of a green zone that stretches horizontally through the whole nearly 2 million city down to the harbour.
The park is famous for its water-light concerts, public theatre & music performances. In addition to the gardens, there is a large playground in the southern park area; the park is open all year round there is no entrance fee.

Germany, Hamburg, the "Elbbrücken" metro station, Elbe bridges station, near the three railway & road bridges called "Elbbrücken" leading over the River-North-Elbe. The metro station consists of two elevated tracks & platforms, opened December 2018 & connected by interlinked skywalk for the Hamburg S-Bahn commuter trains also with two tracks & platforms. The station is the terminus of the U4 line of the metro & will be a new stop for two S-Bahn, commuter trains lines. It was built to facilitate a better accessibility for the new HafenCity quarters of Hamburg from the south.
The curved arches of the futuristic glass roof with 1200 glass panes of 250 kg each & a height of up to almost 16 mtr, the station offers its passengers & visitors a lot of light, wide & many views towards the harbour, the city & the new city quarters, because being located right on the water, the station has an integrated viewing platform. The platform hall is built in a north-south orientation, thus providing the technical prerequisite for an extension of the U4 over the river on the "Kleine Grasbrook" & additional connections.
Due to problems during construction works the opening of the S-Bahn stop, originally planned together with the metro station, has been delayed by estimated 12 to 18 month. Holes for the foundation could not be drilled as planned for the apparent reason that drilling machines partly were confronted by resistance at 10 mtr below the surface. The price tag for the U-Bahn section was lower than projected, down from 178 million Euro to 145 million, including the tracks from the previous station HafenCity Universidad, the cost for the S-Bahn stop is anticipated to rise from 43 to about 60 million Euro.

I'm having a play around with the HDR functions in Lightroom 6 at the moment, and thought I'd let it have a go at a 3 shot image I took last year during London Open House. It's done a pretty good job, in my opinion. The only downside is the size of the images it generates. This ended up being a 160MB .dng file!

Amazing building the Elbphilharmonie concert hall in the Hafen City area of Hamburg. Free tickets to go up via the curved escalators to the walkway which is at the top of the brickwork. Don't try and go on a weekend or after 11am, go first thing when it opens and you will enjoy the views and beauty of the building without all the crowds that arrive by the coach load !! You can pre book your tickets as well on-line in advance, for a small admin fee.
Just visible are some window/panel cleaners suspended on ropes on the righthand side half way up. A few days later we visited the other side and the window cleaners were on the lefthand side, but it was pretty windy so rather them than me doing that job.

Germany, Hamburg, "Elbbrücken", the River Elbe Bridges are three parallel independent bridge structures crossing the river Elbe in Hamburg.
The Freihafenelbbrücken, Freeport Elbe Bridge, after 124 years, the Hamburg Free Port was repealed in January 2013 in the interest of developing the port & city area. Since then, the entire port of Hamburg has been a so-called "sea customs port" under customs law, as are most of the major ports in the European north range.
The Eisenbahnbrücke, Railway Bridge with four railway tracks
The Neue Elbbrücke, New Elbe Bridge, for motorbikes, cars, truks etc.
If the extension of the metro line U4 will be realised, a fourth parallel bridge will added.
Due to the low headroom the brides form the south-eastern end point of the area of the Elbe & the Port of Hamburg, which can be used by large seagoing vessels & is only navigable for small vessels caring the goods from the Hamburg Harbour upstream on the Elbe.
On the one hand, they form an important link within the city-state of Hamburg & connect the districts north of the Elbe with the districts south of the Elbe & the regions beyond.
The Elbe bridges also have a significant national & international function as a north-south link in European rail traffic & in the context of crossings of the federal highways.
The Hamburg Elbbrücken form together with the Old Elbe Tunnel, built in 1911, under the Norderelbe & the "new" highway Elb-tunnel from 1975 with now four lines in each direction. This bridges & tunnels are the last fixed Elbe crossings before the almost 100 km away mouth of the Elbe into the North Sea.
The first documented bridge crossing here was the Napoleonic Elbe Bridge built in 1815 by Napoleon's troops. Because due to lack of maintenance & insufficiently protection, the construction was already completely destroyed by ice floes in 1817 & was not rebuilt.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday! I spent the weekend with family and had a glorious time! They did let me out to take a few shots with the D300. This is a raw image of the Concert Hall at Utah State University in Logan, Utah.

To load the 14 bit NEF into PS3 I needed to update the raw converter to v4.3. Photomatix requires version 2.5.4 to load the 14 bit NEFs correctly although I didn't use Photomatix on this shot. Capture NX comes with the D300 and needs version 1.3.
After a few days of use a few initial thoughts;
1. This camera is fast. Faster than my D2x.
2. Focusing is very quick and seems better than the D200 or D2x.
3. Low noise for sure! 400 and 1600 ISO are very usable.
4. The 14 bit NEF is great although I had to update every piece of software I use to handle it. Definitely a step toward a single shot HDR.
5. Not much advantage when shooting regular HDR images since I use a tripod, jpegs, and low ISO. I wish the camera would bracket at 2ev steps but it still will only do 1ev steps requiring 5xp to get the needed -2 to +2 ev for HDR.
This view shows the south side of the 200 block of E. Washington St. in downtown Bloomington, two blocks west of the Old Courthouse Square. The two buildings on our immediate left were designed by architect A. T. Simmons. Simmons designed the Lafayette Apartments posted earlier in this series, but is probably best known for his more than 71 Carnegie libraries in Illinois and a dozen other states, along with numerous courthouses, schools, churches and other public buildings. Simmons also designed most of the houses in the Cedar Crest Historic District of Normal, Illinois, the other half of the twin municipalities of Bloomington and Normal.
The building with the Paxtons name over its entrance was the first of the two buildings to be constructed. Known as the C. U. Williams & Son Building, the four-story building was constructed as an automobile showroom, garage and lodge hall. Called “the largest in any city of Bloomington’s size,” this impressive steel-frame and brick edifice was testament to the coming automobile age. Of particular note are the large second-story showroom windows designed to display twice as many cars from the street.
According to the McLean County Museum of History, and his son Walter sold the latest models from early automakers, including E-M-F, Chalmers, Moon, Stearns, Studebaker, Willys-Overland and Woods (the latter known for its electric cars). "The manufacturers that we are representing are all old and well-established houses - there cars are long past the experimental stage," was a C. U. Williams & Son promise.
About four years after opening his automobile showroom, Williams commissioned A. T. Simmons to design the Castle Theatre next door. Upon its completion, Williams used the upper floors above the theater for garage space. Both buildings had freight elevators large enough to accommodate the cars of the day.
In later years an office equipment company by the name of Paxtons occupied the C. U. Williams & Son Building. It is now the home of the legal offices of Wylder Corwin Kelly LLP, trial lawyers specializing in medical malpractice.
The Castle Theatre opened January 24, 1916 as a 1,100-seat movie theatre. It was Bloomington's first real movie palace, and remained a popular Bloomington movie theater until 1988. The Castle Theatre reopened in 2003 after a much-needed restoration as a “brew and view” style first-run movie house but was closed again in January 2007. A church, which has used the theater for Sunday morning services since 2005, continued to meet at the Castle Theatre until late-2010. New owners took over and it is now used as a concert venue.
Both the C. U. Williams & Son Building and the Castle Theatre are contributing architectural properties in the Bloomington Central Business District listed in 1985 on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The district includes roughly twelve square blocks of the city and encompasses 140 buildings, 118 of which are contributing buildings to the district's historic character.
Bloomington is the seat of McLean County. It is adjacent to Normal, and is the more populous of the two principal municipalities of the Bloomington-Normal metropolitan area. Bloomington is home to State Farm Insurance, Country Financial and Beer Nuts. Illinois Wesleyan University is located here, while the neighboring city of Normal is home to Illinois State University and Heartland Community College. Bloomington is 135 miles (217 km) southwest of Chicago, and 162 miles (261 km) northeast of St. Louis. The estimated population of Bloomington in 2019 was 77,330, with a metro population of 191,067.

I'm fortunate to have a world-class orchestra and concert hall just an hour's drive from my home. I've read that Symphony Hall is among the top concert halls in the world for acoustics, though I'm reminded of a quote I also read from the renowned German conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler who, when asked about the concert hall with the best acoustics, replied along the lines of "the one with the best performances."
View from the first row of the first balcony, using the railing as a tripod. This is a re-process of a color version I posted back in November. The color version was of interest at the time because the three exposed sections of the magnificent and recently renovated Aeolian-Skinner organ, Opus 1134, were illuminated preconcert and during intermission in blue, white, and red---in recognition of the Paris terrorist attacks that took place the previous week. (The BSO has a very strong French tradition.)
One of the interior halls within the Harpa concert hall of Reykjavik. Beautiful red walls and the acoustics were pretty darn good too! Not in this hall, but another, our tour guide even performed some impromptu opera.
