Dark Souls II Scholar of the First Sin
Mask of the Lost Sinner.
The spikes pointing inward suggest that this was not only used to bind prisoners, but to torture them as well.
"Can anyone be a man of knowledge?"
"No, not anyone."
"Then what must a man do to become a man of knowledge?"
"He must challenge and defeat his four natural enemies."
"Will he be a man of knowledge after defeating these four enemies?"
"Yes. A man can call himself a man of knowledge only if he is capable of defeating all four of them."
"Then, can anybody who defeats these enemies be a man of knowledge?"
"Anybody who defeats them becomes a man of knowledge"
"But are there any special requirements a man must fulfill before fighting with these enemies?"
"No. Anyone can try to become a man of knowledge; very few men actually succeed, but that is only natural. The enemies a man encounters on the path of learning to become a man of knowledge are truly formidable; most men succumb to them.
When a man starts to learn, he is never clear about his objectives. His purpose is faulty; his intent is vague. He hopes for rewards that will never materialize, for he knows nothing of the hardships of learning."
"He slowly begins to learn - bit by bit at first, then in big chunks. And his thoughts soon clash. What he learns is never what he pictured, or imagined, and so he begins to be afraid. Learning is never what one expects.
Every step of learning is a new task, and the fear the man is experiencing begins to mount mercilessly, unyieldingly. His purpose becomes a battlefield."
"And thus he has tumbled upon the first of his natural enemies: Fear!
A terrible enemy - treacherous, and difficult to overcome. It remains concealed at every turn of the way, prowling, waiting. And if the man, terrified in its presence, runs away, his enemy will have put an end to his quest."
"What will happen to the man if he runs away in fear?"
"Nothing happens to him except that he will never learn. He will never become a man of knowledge. "
A couple years back I decided to give Bryce 6 a test to see how it handled GI and IBL.
I thought the image came out pretty good.
The time it took to render this was a surprise though...
7 full days to render this image at 3k resolution on a quad-core machine. I was expecting a day, maybe two at the very most. Yowza!

I took a breather durng the card project to work on one for myself. It is so relaxing to begin working without any idea of what the theme would be. I start by just playing with background, piecing bits and pieces, then blending, manipulating until a mood and idea begins to emerge. I had no idea in the beginning that I would make a woman with a bird. Whereas, when I’m working for a client, with a specific theme, it’s much different. When I do art for myself, I just let my hand lead me, instead of forcing the art to comply with a specific idea. It is very relaxing … until …
At 3 a.m. after working for about 6 hours without saving, Photoshop crashed when I tried to distort an object that had a Mask applied plus was linked to several other layers with Masks on them. The Photoshop file was already more than 6 gigs! with about 70 layers, so the calculations for this distortion exceeded the available RAM, so down she went. I remember emitting a loud "NO !" (I hope I didn’t wake my neighbors There was nothing to do but to redo all that work. I had to redo most of the dress that I had painstakingly worked on for hours, had to redo the bird, the flowers and the woman’s chest and collarbone, which you might think is easy, but that portion alone had taken me more than an hour to complete.
You think I would have learned my lesson by now. Once I lost an entire day’s work when Photoshop crashed and since then I’ve gotten into the habit of saving more frequently. But when the files are 6 gigs unflattened, (169 MB as a flattened Tif), it actually takes 17 minutes for the file to save (I timed it). That’s the reason why when I’m in the ‘zone’, I hate to have to sit and twiddle my thumbs while the file saves. But I sure paid for it, I had to redo 6 hours of work. I was up until 9 a.m. finishing it up (and had worked day and night for 3 days before). This image took me 4 days and nights to complete.
The woman is made from too many pieces to count, ie: the eyelashes from one, irises from another, eyebrows from another, nose from another, hair from several, shoulders from another, and so on. I love this kind of challenge, creating things from bits and pieces. I made the dress in Photoshop, using tiny bits and pieces. I tried so many hand poses, and different birds, eventually settling on this little sparrow, comprised of 3 different images.
For anyone who is interested, I've just created a book of my images, available from www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/451343 This link just shows a few sample pages. It is really an experiment, I've not yet received the copy I ordered so I can't yet attest to quality, but I have heard that their book quality is good. I created it mostly as a portfolio piece and out of curiosity, but anyone is welcome to order a copy if they would like one. :-)
This one took 3 days to make. I needed to take a little break from making the children's cards, in order to refresh my creativity. You can view them on my blog www.galefraney.wordpress.com , several that I've not posted here.
One of my friends had mentioned to me that many of my images are of females. This is not my intention. I enjoy doing images of men/boys too. I had actually intended to do some of male subjects to balance the scales.
The character is comprised of too many bits and pieces to count. He is purely a figment of my imagination ... ie: hair from various sources, forehead from another, eyes from another, chin from another, neck from another, bicep from another, shoulder from another, hips from another, hand from another and so on. This is what makes it so fun, creating a person who doesn't exist. I tried to give him a sort of Mowgli personality ... the jungle boy all grown up :-)

Here is another collaboration with Anne de Haas. This is an image of Amber (original photo taken by Anne), to which I've woven a graphic fairytale. Here is a link to the original image: www.flickr.com/photos/annedehaas/180745967/?#comment72157...

In this work I tried to use all colors related to Sea and made it like enchanted sea which is full of beautiful tiny sparkling stones . The Waves and deep swirls are making this sea even more beautiful and giving it feeling of enchantment. So I named it Enchanted Sea.
This one is for Kathy: www.flickr.com/photos/raylan/225890152/ Ray asked me if I could do a digital art piece with his daughter's photograph. Her face has such a natural nymph-like quality which inspired me.

Moons and rings are derived from Cassini mission imagery. The clouds are a photograph taken from a Southwest flight somewhere over Southern California.
This series of images explores the idea of a subject breaking free from the confines of its canvas—a metaphor for transcending limitations, expectations, or the boundaries of artistic expression.
However, not every attempt aligns perfectly with my initial vision. Sometimes, the result diverges from what the mind imagines or what an AI generates. These discrepancies highlight the unpredictable nature of both creativity and technology, where the final output can be as much a surprise to me as it is to you, the viewer. This unpredictability, while challenging, also adds to the uniqueness and authenticity of each piece.
❤️🍀🌺💛 AI-created images blend imagination with precision — a fusion of human vision and machine mastery, where dreams take form in light and texture. They’re beauty born from code, yet filled with soul.❤️🍀🌺💛
