I was doing a homework assignment, working on my Flash website and I went looking for an image among my digital art for one of the web pages. Nothing seemed to match the color and mood of the website, so before I knew it I began to dabble in P:hotoshop and 24 hours later, I finished this digital art piece. I am very happy with it but I never did get to my homework assignments and so for the next few days I'll be scrambling to catch up. It is such a catch 22. If I take the time to do some art, I feel so wonderful, as though I've quenched a deep thirst ... but then I'm doomed to afterwards feel deep anxiety because my homework assignments get pushed aside. Well better get down to some serious business with the homework ... PHP and MY SQL, not exactly my favorite subject :-)

I've made this image into a panorama size, and on Flickr it is resized to quite small. It is best viewed at the larger size.

My blog address is: www.galefraney.wordpress.com

I've now uploaded a tutorial showing a lot of the steps and techniques I use when making digital art. galefraney.wordpress.com/2008/02/17/digital-art-tutorial/

Hard to understand why this one gets such poor reviews. Amazing gun play and the AI is the best I've encountered. Early days though.

Hey there. I haven't been out taking photos for a while - my foot and I had a disagreement and, well... So I started doing some computer art work. Called VQGAN+CLIP, you input text and other stuff, and a computer AI comes up with the art. It's like looking at the world through the eyes of an alien, kind of. Anyway, I'll be around to view and comment on your photos shortly. Thank you if you visit :)

I've made this one for Anne de Haas, torontofotobug, using an image that she took of Charlene, that I've composited into this stormy fantasy. Here is a link to her fantastic photostream:

This one I've been wanting to do for a long time. It is of the lovely model Emina from Reiner's photostream. When I made a recent comment on one of her images, Reiner asked me if I would like to make a graphic of her. I had been thinking the same thing, so I jumped at the opportunity. I actually merged 3 images of Emina to make this graphic. This piece took about 14 hours in total.

The incredibly wonderful eagle is from imtoootall. I had faved the image some time ago and remembered it when I was making this graphic. imtoootall graciously allowed me to use the image for this piece: www.flickr.com/photos/tallbob/204365948/

This graphic is best viewed at large size because the canvas is tall and Flickr does an awkward resize, which does not look as natural as the original.

This series of images explores the idea of a subject breaking free from the confines of its canvas—a metaphor for transcending limitations, expectations, or the boundaries of artistic expression.

However, not every attempt aligns perfectly with my initial vision. Sometimes, the result diverges from what the mind imagines or what an AI generates. These discrepancies highlight the unpredictable nature of both creativity and technology, where the final output can be as much a surprise to me as it is to you, the viewer. This unpredictability, while challenging, also adds to the uniqueness and authenticity of each piece.

Here is another sample piece I did for the children's book, Super Someone. These were created using Photoshop CS4.

I've also been teaching Photoshop CS4 at BCIT, a college here in Vancouver, Canada. I've been so busy that I am not able to visit Flickr as often as I'd like.

This one took 4 days to create (with a 2 week break in between). I've been enjoying CS4. It's far more stable than CS3. It hasn't crashed at all. Works smoothly, except that I've not been able to get the OpenGL features to work. I'm not sure if this is due to my graphics card or operating system.

I was also playing with the 3D features and the 3D axis is not visible, even though I've selected it in the View menu. A mystery I need to figure out soon because I'll be teaching Photoshop at the college in April and need to be able to demonstrate how all these features work.

When Flickr resizes images it seems to add sharp edges, so this view isn't as soft as the original view. Best viewed at the larger size.

If you'd like to read more about the process I used to make this you can read more on my blog: galefraney.wordpress.com/2009/02/

Happy Update

Miraculously, The OpenGL features have begun working, along with the 3D Axis tool. I’m not certain what caused this because I did a number of different things while trying to troubleshoot the problem. I went to the NVIDIA website to update my Video card driver. You can choose an option to have the website automatically detect your video card and download the appropriate driver. However, after I installed the new driver, I noticed that the version number was lower than my prior version. This worried me, so I then went to my PC’s Windows Update by right clicking my Desktop, choosing Properties / Settings / Advanced / Adaptor / Properties / Driver / Update Driver. Although I had done this before and received a message that my driver was up to date, this time it actually updated the driver. I think this is what corrected the problem.

I can now do neat functions like Rotate Canvas which comes in handy for painting with a Wacom tablet. And Image Toss, which might sound like some mere gimmick, but believe me, when you have an enormuos document and are zoomed in to some detail and you need to pan to another area of the image, the pan glides as effortlessly as an Olympic skater and there is no blocky redraw lag time, Yipeeeeee !!!

There is also a new handy shortcut in CS4, if you Hold down your mouse while pressing the “H” Key while you are on any other tool. While still holding down both, you can slide around to any area of the image, then when you release the mouse it zooms into that area of the image. Very quick and wonderful way to get around a large, zoomed in image.

I also finally see the 3D Axis Tool, which is the most efficient way to manipulate the X, Y, and Z movements and rotations. I was so happy and relieved when these features began working that I felt tears come to my eyes. I never realized how important they were to me until I saw my reaction when they magically appeared. I am one very happy Photoshopper today !!!

Since 2015, the richest 1% owns more than the rest of humanity. Eight mega-billionaires are as wealthy as humanity’s 3.6 poorest.

“Over the next 20 years, 500 people will hand over $2.1 trillion to their heirs - a sum larger than the GDP of India, a country of 1.3 billion people.”

From 1988 - 2011, the incomes of humanity’s poorest 10% increased by less than $3 a year - less than nothing when adjusted for inflation.

Over the same period, the incomes of humanity’s richest 1% increased 182 times as much.

“A FTSE-100 CEO earns as much in a year as 10,000 people in working in garment factories in Bangladesh. A Dow CEO likely earns as much as 20,000 or 30,000 impoverished third-world workers.

Over the last 30 years, income growth of the world’s bottom 50% was zero. The top 1% tripled their income over the same period.

“In Vietnam, the country’s richest man earns more in a day than the poorest earns in 10 years.”

Super-wealth in the hands of a select few used to make obscene greater amounts is incompatible with peace, equity and justice - what so-called Western civilization abhors, exploiting the many by every means imaginable for greater riches, war-profiteering a favorite way.

Mass slaughter and destruction enriches them, unspeakable human misery considered a small price to pay.

Here’s the Oxfam infamous 8:

Carlos Slim: NW $50 billion

Jeff Bezos: NW $45.2 billion

Mark Zuckerberg: NW $44.6 billion

Larry Ellison: NW $43.6 billion

Michael Bloomberg: NW $40 billion

Beyond the infamous 8, the two Koch brothers have a net worth of nearly $80 billion. The world’s billionaire class in total has a staggering net worth of $6.5 trillion.

"Can anyone be a man of knowledge?"

"No, not anyone."

"Then what must a man do to become a man of knowledge?"

"He must challenge and defeat his four natural enemies."

"Will he be a man of knowledge after defeating these four enemies?"

"Yes. A man can call himself a man of knowledge only if he is capable of defeating all four of them."

"Then, can anybody who defeats these enemies be a man of knowledge?"

"Anybody who defeats them becomes a man of knowledge"

"But are there any special requirements a man must fulfill before fighting with these enemies?"

"No. Anyone can try to become a man of knowledge; very few men actually succeed, but that is only natural. The enemies a man encounters on the path of learning to become a man of knowledge are truly formidable; most men succumb to them.

When a man starts to learn, he is never clear about his objectives. His purpose is faulty; his intent is vague. He hopes for rewards that will never materialize, for he knows nothing of the hardships of learning."

"He slowly begins to learn - bit by bit at first, then in big chunks. And his thoughts soon clash. What he learns is never what he pictured, or imagined, and so he begins to be afraid. Learning is never what one expects.

Every step of learning is a new task, and the fear the man is experiencing begins to mount mercilessly, unyieldingly. His purpose becomes a battlefield."

"And thus he has tumbled upon the first of his natural enemies: Fear!

A terrible enemy - treacherous, and difficult to overcome. It remains concealed at every turn of the way, prowling, waiting. And if the man, terrified in its presence, runs away, his enemy will have put an end to his quest."

"What will happen to the man if he runs away in fear?"

"Nothing happens to him except that he will never learn. He will never become a man of knowledge. "

A couple years back I decided to give Bryce 6 a test to see how it handled GI and IBL.

I thought the image came out pretty good.

The time it took to render this was a surprise though...

7 full days to render this image at 3k resolution on a quad-core machine. I was expecting a day, maybe two at the very most. Yowza!
