This is a cropped sample of another book image that I made for a children's book. It is actually a 2-page spread with the story for a company named Flattenme.
Please note that although I made the digital art images for the book, the publication of the book belongs to a company and I do not receive any commission from the sales, just in case you were thinking this was a shameless plug. :-)
p.s. The story is written by my dear friend, Froggie (frogmuseum2) www.flickr.com/photos/frogmuseum2/
(I do not make any commission nor profit from the sales of this book).

“You like the humbleness of a beggar,” he said softly. “You bow your head to reason.”
“I always think that I’m being tricked,” I said. “That’s the crux of my problem.”
“You’re right. You are being tricked,” he retorted with a disarming smile. “That cannot be your problem. The real crux of the matter is that you feel that I am deliberately lying to you, am I correct?”
“Yes. There is something in myself that doesn’t let me believe that what’s taking place is real.”
“You’re right again. Nothing of what is taking place is real.”
“What do you mean by that, don Juan?”
“Things are real only after one has learned to agree on their realness. What took place this evening, for instance, cannot possibly be real to you, because no one could agree with you about it.”
“Do you mean that you didn’t see what happened?”
“Of course I did. But I don’t count. I am the one who’s lying to you, remember?”
Don Juan laughed until he coughed and choked. His laughter was friendly even though he was making fun of me.
“Don’t pay too much attention to all my gibberish,” he said reassuringly. “I’m just trying to relax you and I know that you feel at home only when you’re muddled up.”
His expression was deliberately comical and we both laughed. I told him that what he had just said made me feel more afraid than ever.
“You’re afraid of me?” he asked.
“Not of you, but of what you represent.”
“I represent the warrior’s freedom. Are you afraid of that?”
“No. But I’m afraid of the awesomeness of your knowledge. There is no solace for me, no haven to go to.”
“You’re again confusing issues. Solace, haven, fear, all of them are moods that you have learned without ever questioning their value. As one can see, the black magicians have already engaged all your allegiance.”
“Who are the black magicians, don Juan?”
“Our fellow men are the black magicians. And since you are with them, you too are a black magician. Think for a moment. Can you deviate from the path that they’ve lined up for you? No. Your thoughts and your actions are fixed forever in their terms. That is slavery. I, on the other hand, brought you freedom. Freedom is expensive, but the price is not impossible. So, fear your captors, your masters. Don’t waste your time and your power fearing me.”

"It is stupid for you to scorn the mysteries of the world simply because you know the doing of scorn," he said with a serious face.

I usually walk home from work in the evening, takes me more than one hour, but I like to take some time to unwind. It gives my mind time to mull over the day. Yesterday while walking home, I spent the entire time planning this graphic and while thinking about what concept I would create, this song from my childhood kept repeating in my mind, and I knew it would become the theme:
Que sera, sera,
Whatever will be, will be;
The future's not ours to see.
Que sera, sera,
What will be, will be

Alone is so lonely...
Her heart sings a sad song in a lonely place....
Its a melancholic melody...
it heals as it hurts.
As pain flies away with the notes...
The broken wings of her hopes rise again.

This one took me 2 full days and all night. I began the day before yesterday, in the afternoon and continued through the night, continuing without sleep until 12 noon. Then I slept for 4 hours. Then yesterday I continued all afternoon and again through the night, until morning. It is now 5:30 a.m. and I am so tired that I somehow inadvertently saved a flattened version over top of my layered PSD. Thankfully I had already completed the image, but I always like to keep the layered files, just in case I need to fix something later, or if I need to refer to some layer. I didn't realize I was that tired, so my fingers somehow slipped on the keys, pressing "Save" instead of "Save As". It was only after closing Photoshop that I realized what happened, so I couldn't go back in the History palette to recover the layered version.
I've had 10 days vacation off from school over Christmas. I've been mostly spinning my wheels, trying to learn Flash Actionscript 3. For some reason the concepts just don't seem to sink in, ie: the variables, functions, event handlers, curly brackets, quotation marks, arrays, square brackets, and so on. It's been like one step forward, two steps back. I've studied for days but don't seem to have made much progress. If I had to create a project from scratch using Actionscript, I wouldn't remember which needs the event listener & what arguments are empty and where to put the :void. But I am determined to conquer this beast ... I subscribe to both www.lynda.com and www.totaltraining.com and watch their online videos over and over to the point where I am dreaming in Actionscript. But for some reason I still couldn't code my way out of a soggy paper bag to save my life.
My Christmas and New Year's Wish is to somehow get all this code to stick to my brain cells.
Now I will go to bed and take a long, luxurious sleep.
Happy New Year !! :-)

Novigrad is a free city within Redania and is therefore not subject to the rule of that kingdom. It is one of the major ports on the continent. Populated by nearly 30,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in the North. It's located on Pontar Delta, on the northern shore of the river Pontar, west of Tretogor and north-west of Oxenfurt. Novigrad is home to all manner of craftsmen offering every ware that could possibly find a buyer. One can even find the occasional conman or shady dealer. The Eternal Fire is said to protect the city's inhabitants from all evil, monsters included.
Novigrad is inhabited by an unusually colorful group of both permanent residents and those in town on long and short-term visits. Most eye-catching amidst the throngs of common townsfolk, stall-keepers, and craftsmen are those practicing the more roguish professions. There is no army in the city but a powerful Secret Service and its ironfist, Temple Guard and powerful Temple Fleet.

I was doing a homework assignment, working on my Flash website and I went looking for an image among my digital art for one of the web pages. Nothing seemed to match the color and mood of the website, so before I knew it I began to dabble in P:hotoshop and 24 hours later, I finished this digital art piece. I am very happy with it but I never did get to my homework assignments and so for the next few days I'll be scrambling to catch up. It is such a catch 22. If I take the time to do some art, I feel so wonderful, as though I've quenched a deep thirst ... but then I'm doomed to afterwards feel deep anxiety because my homework assignments get pushed aside. Well better get down to some serious business with the homework ... PHP and MY SQL, not exactly my favorite subject :-)
I've made this image into a panorama size, and on Flickr it is resized to quite small. It is best viewed at the larger size.

I've now uploaded a tutorial showing a lot of the steps and techniques I use when making digital art. galefraney.wordpress.com/2008/02/17/digital-art-tutorial/
