cordovaraven left a comment on my stream, kindly offering me some of his raven photos to use in a future graphic. I used 3 of them to build this 'character' (eyes and beak from one, torso from another and some spunky feathers from yet another).

Just getting to know the software.

This is a close up view of Emina from the full version piece that I already uploaded. I am uploading because several people mentioned they would like to zoom into more detail. :-D

Give up learning, and put an end to your troubles.

Is there a difference between yes and no?

Is there a difference between good and evil?

Must I fear what others fear? What nonsence!

Other people are contented, enjoying the sacrificial feast of the ox.

In spring some go to the park, and climb the terrace,

But I alone am drifting not knowing where I am.

Like a new-born babe before it learns to smile,

I am alone, without a place to go.

Others have more than they need, but I alone have nothing.

I am a fool. Oh, yes! I am confused.

Other men are clear and bright,

But I alone am dim and weak.

Other men are sharp and clever,

But I alone am dull and stupid.

Oh, I drift like the waves of the sea.

Without direction, like the restless wind.

Everyone else is busy,

But I alone am aimless and depressed.

I am different.

I am nourished by the great mother.

On Friday I was in the most creative mood. I had at least 5 strong ideas in my imagination and wanted nothing more than to sit down for 11 hours straight and work on a digital art piece. But I had school all day. So I began this one late last night and worked on it again today, finishing it just now, at 4:16 a.m. It took me about 14 hours in total to complete.

This is a cropped sample of another book image that I made for a children's book. It is actually a 2-page spread with the story for a company named Flattenme.

Please note that although I made the digital art images for the book, the publication of the book belongs to a company and I do not receive any commission from the sales, just in case you were thinking this was a shameless plug. :-)

p.s. The story is written by my dear friend, Froggie (frogmuseum2) www.flickr.com/photos/frogmuseum2/

(I do not make any commission nor profit from the sales of this book).

“You like the humbleness of a beggar,” he said softly. “You bow your head to reason.”

“I always think that I’m being tricked,” I said. “That’s the crux of my problem.”

“You’re right. You are being tricked,” he retorted with a disarming smile. “That cannot be your problem. The real crux of the matter is that you feel that I am deliberately lying to you, am I correct?”

“Yes. There is something in myself that doesn’t let me believe that what’s taking place is real.”

“You’re right again. Nothing of what is taking place is real.”

“What do you mean by that, don Juan?”

“Things are real only after one has learned to agree on their realness. What took place this evening, for instance, cannot possibly be real to you, because no one could agree with you about it.”

“Do you mean that you didn’t see what happened?”

“Of course I did. But I don’t count. I am the one who’s lying to you, remember?”

Don Juan laughed until he coughed and choked. His laughter was friendly even though he was making fun of me.

“Don’t pay too much attention to all my gibberish,” he said reassuringly. “I’m just trying to relax you and I know that you feel at home only when you’re muddled up.”

His expression was deliberately comical and we both laughed. I told him that what he had just said made me feel more afraid than ever.

“You’re afraid of me?” he asked.

“Not of you, but of what you represent.”

“I represent the warrior’s freedom. Are you afraid of that?”

“No. But I’m afraid of the awesomeness of your knowledge. There is no solace for me, no haven to go to.”

“You’re again confusing issues. Solace, haven, fear, all of them are moods that you have learned without ever questioning their value. As one can see, the black magicians have already engaged all your allegiance.”

“Who are the black magicians, don Juan?”

“Our fellow men are the black magicians. And since you are with them, you too are a black magician. Think for a moment. Can you deviate from the path that they’ve lined up for you? No. Your thoughts and your actions are fixed forever in their terms. That is slavery. I, on the other hand, brought you freedom. Freedom is expensive, but the price is not impossible. So, fear your captors, your masters. Don’t waste your time and your power fearing me.”

Lovin this game.

I usually walk home from work in the evening, takes me more than one hour, but I like to take some time to unwind. It gives my mind time to mull over the day. Yesterday while walking home, I spent the entire time planning this graphic and while thinking about what concept I would create, this song from my childhood kept repeating in my mind, and I knew it would become the theme:

Que sera, sera,

Whatever will be, will be;

The future's not ours to see.

Que sera, sera,

What will be, will be

I spent two days and nights making this digital art piece, approximately 35 hours or more. It is the first one I've done on my new computer, with its 6 gigs of RAM and high octane processor. But I still ran into problems because in the Preferences for Photoshop, the maximum RAM that I'm able to allocate is 2 gigs. I did this but Photoshop was still running slow on this file, which at times ran upwards of 7 gigs!! (this is only 7% of its original size).

Late last night, after I had almost finished, the PSD file was bloated to more than 5 gigs and I hadn't yet merged some of the layers in order to bring it down to 2 gigs (which is the maximum that can be saved in Photoshop's PSD format). Well, the unthinkable happened. It was a Catch 22. I couldn't save because I wasn't ready to merge layers, and I had worked since early morning. I've never known Photoshop to freeze, but it did, and shut down. My entire day's work was lost.

For about half an hour I was in shock and wondered if I should just forget the project. Then I decided to start all over again from scratch. The other version was completely different. Emina was in water and the background was completely different. Her dress was also entirely different. Although it was a horrible experience, it turned out to be interesting seeing how the piece morphed into something so different from the first version. I think I like this one better, but I also really liked the mood of the other.

Tomorrow it's back to school (I had a week off). I've finished Term 2 and am beginning Term 3, taking New Media and Web Development, which includes design, Photoshop, Flash, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Pro Tools, Adobe Illustrator, etc. It's a great course but the course load is so heavy that I rarely have a moment to immerse myself in digital art.

I've used the face of the beautiful Emina, but the body is comprised of so many bits and pieces. I made the dress entirely in Photoshop.

Alone is so lonely...

Her heart sings a sad song in a lonely place....

Its a melancholic melody...

it heals as it hurts.

As pain flies away with the notes...

The broken wings of her hopes rise again.

Novigrad is a free city within Redania and is therefore not subject to the rule of that kingdom. It is one of the major ports on the continent. Populated by nearly 30,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in the North. It's located on Pontar Delta, on the northern shore of the river Pontar, west of Tretogor and north-west of Oxenfurt. Novigrad is home to all manner of craftsmen offering every ware that could possibly find a buyer. One can even find the occasional conman or shady dealer. The Eternal Fire is said to protect the city's inhabitants from all evil, monsters included.

Novigrad is inhabited by an unusually colorful group of both permanent residents and those in town on long and short-term visits. Most eye-catching amidst the throngs of common townsfolk, stall-keepers, and craftsmen are those practicing the more roguish professions. There is no army in the city but a powerful Secret Service and its ironfist, Temple Guard and powerful Temple Fleet.

This one took me 2 full days and all night. I began the day before yesterday, in the afternoon and continued through the night, continuing without sleep until 12 noon. Then I slept for 4 hours. Then yesterday I continued all afternoon and again through the night, until morning. It is now 5:30 a.m. and I am so tired that I somehow inadvertently saved a flattened version over top of my layered PSD. Thankfully I had already completed the image, but I always like to keep the layered files, just in case I need to fix something later, or if I need to refer to some layer. I didn't realize I was that tired, so my fingers somehow slipped on the keys, pressing "Save" instead of "Save As". It was only after closing Photoshop that I realized what happened, so I couldn't go back in the History palette to recover the layered version.

I've had 10 days vacation off from school over Christmas. I've been mostly spinning my wheels, trying to learn Flash Actionscript 3. For some reason the concepts just don't seem to sink in, ie: the variables, functions, event handlers, curly brackets, quotation marks, arrays, square brackets, and so on. It's been like one step forward, two steps back. I've studied for days but don't seem to have made much progress. If I had to create a project from scratch using Actionscript, I wouldn't remember which needs the event listener & what arguments are empty and where to put the :void. But I am determined to conquer this beast ... I subscribe to both www.lynda.com and www.totaltraining.com and watch their online videos over and over to the point where I am dreaming in Actionscript. But for some reason I still couldn't code my way out of a soggy paper bag to save my life.

My Christmas and New Year's Wish is to somehow get all this code to stick to my brain cells.

Now I will go to bed and take a long, luxurious sleep.

Happy New Year !! :-)
