food for the worms

This screening keeps my leaves and used coffee filters from blowing around the neighborhood.

I spread the compost, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep, then use the fork to work it in--simply slide the fork into the top layer and rock it back out. No heavy mixing, just gentle incorporation.

Started worm composting. Looked up some DIY worm bins and combined the two ideas I liked best and this is the outcome.

learning a lot about compost

such as: don't turn it!

photo taken for Jason ;-) ... and for me too as I find this fascinating at full-size. But we all know I'm a bit strange.

Assembled but not properly seated.

Had to fix the hole by cutting and/or shoring in order to make it more closely match the bales. The old bin can be seen in front.

This picture really doesn't do justice to the size of this pile of compost!

Yes, that's a huge tomato plant growing out of the doorway of my composter. And, yes, it's doing better than any other plant over in my proper garden. Well it should, with all that nutrient-rich compost around its root system! August 2011.

Day 342: This didn't quite turn out how I wanted, but it is what I have ;)

When the bin is closed it still allows some moisture and yet retains enough heat to process the content and to keep the bugs and worms nice and toasty. Do your thing little critters!

Sustainable Seattle's role in the event was to get it as close as possible to zero-waste, by providing compost and recycling facilities, and staffing them to get people to throw things in the right bin.
