Dead springtails (Collembola) and dark-winged fungus gnat (Sciaridae) found on the surface of a tiny puddle on the top of our compost bin.
I'm in a compost class. Yeah I actually get credits for it and everything. This is an experiment where we are comparing two different bulking agents, wood chips vs straw. Here we are using a manure spreader to mix up the compost in an enclosed bin
Coco pods and manure are turned into compost at an aerobic composting center near Caleta, Ecuador. Heifer provided funds for the center and trained the staff on composting techniques. Cocoa farmers provide pod scrapes for composting and are resold the compost as fertilizer at a discounted rate of 2 dollars a bag.
Just a three sided structure to contain the finished compost. This one I can get at with the front-end loader.
Level of compost extract pumped into a sprayer. The extractor uses water and air to concentrate living biology in compost into liquid that can be used in sprayers, seeders, and other equipment to jump start soil biology. Shawn Preputin, Larry Johnson, and Alec McIntosh, farmers, create compost extract that is applied to their crop fields to bolster soil microbes and improve soil health. Hill County, MT; June 2022
Step 1: Make room to the side of the compost bin you are going to turn. I keep enough space open for three bins worth of size, I just store some cans and equipment in the spot the bins are not using.
I have stacking Smith & Hawkin bins with 3 levels or "tiers". I purchased them at a substantial discount from our county composting group which is encouraging people to compost their garden, yard, and kitchen waste instead of sending it to a landfill. You should only compost plant waste in these types of compost bins, no meat or dairy product waste. I guess those other types can still be composted, they just don't recommend it with these types of bins.

We found hundreds of worms under a broken compost bin in our community garden in Cambridge. We observed carefully how they were clumped in fairly wet areas of heavy-ish organic material that was infused with lots of straw. It smelled great so we knew the worms and the system were happy. We brought them home and arranged them in a bin, trying to maintain the "feel" and smell of the ecosystem we took them out of.
I needed to move the compost heap from one side of the garden to the other, in order to dig up the flags next to the bench.
I tried shoving it and working it, but in the end, it was easier to shove it over, slide the plastic free, put it where it needed to go, and then re-fill it with the compost, which had been lying about on the floor.
Soil aggregation in disc drilled soils (L) versus hoe drilled soils (R). The sample on the left shows more aggregation which allows for more water infiltration and storage. Larry Johnson, Shawn Preputin (R), and Alec McIntosh, farmers, create compost extract that is applied to their crop fields to bolster soil microbes and improve soil health. Hill County, MT; June 2022
We dug up compost from the woods in back and sifted them into this wagon. I mixed it with last year's potting soil. The white container is for strawberries.
On September 18, 2013 the Center for Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership (CWEL) at Babson College sponsored CWEL Day! It featured CWEL's first annual Disruption Dinner. Speakers at the dinner included Kirsten Lambert and Joan Ripple of Beantown Bedding (compostable collections for bed and bath); Ashley Lucas of The Welcoming Committee (bringing hundreds of gays to typically straight spaces); and Tara Foley of Follain (clean, pure and effective US-made skincare products). For more information about how CWEL supports women entrepreneurs, visit www.babson.edu/CWEL.
Shown here with a normal sized coffee mug for size comparison, this is a very hard worker in my kitchen. All the non-dairy, meat, fruit scraps go into here, including coffee grounds, used tea and eggshells. When it gets full, the contents go into my compost bin, outside. A filter inside the lid doesn't let any odors out. It's a great idea!
I originally bought this bin and named it "Yard Waste" because my city used to have free curbside recycling of such things. With the recent budget cuts, they stopped that but still offer free regular trash pickup. Rather than put my yard waste in with the trash that ends up in the landfill, where it turns into methane gas, I'm attempting to turn this bin into a mini home composter by drilling holes into it for aeration.
