Bessie and City are quite happy with the fact they got to help me rake the backyard. They think they get to ride to the community compost pile and help unload. I told them after what they did to my rake they might just be left there. They started out quite nice, just exploring the area I had raked with City ocassionally picking up a stray stick, but it changed with both of them attacking the rake and breaking off several tines.
This morning there was a funny smell in the house. Our neighbour farmer started to spread his cow manure. We joined him and worked (and the next couple of days) in our garden and spread our own stable compost.
Continuing the Compost Awareness Week theme( 6th-12th May), we held a composters at home open day here at our home yesterday.
This is the poster /flag produced by Norfolk County Council, UK to promote this activity. My husband is a master composter and works as a community volunteer for the scheme. Lots of home open days were being held all over the county. We invited our friends and neighbours to the event, (including more than one flick contacts), to partake in this. Our local Green party representative also came along, and we turned in into a very lively gathering for several hours.
my photos "Celebrating the Countryside" series is running alongside this awareness theme. The aim of this small project is to highlight the earth's dwindling natural resources and the need to recycle these in a productive way.
Composting is one easy and non-labour intensive way of achieving this. The question could be asked:
"Why bother as this type of matter illustrated will eventually rot in landfill sites?"
The answer is,Yes, it will, but as it is compressed with many other items in a landfill site, it will produce a toxic methane gas, one of the main gases responsible for global warming.
Besides, to produce your own compost, for those tubs and hanging baskets, will cost nothing compared to the bags commercially produced for sale. This type of compost contains peat, which has to be extracted from peat bogs.Peat bog sites are dwindling in numbers, so by composting at home you will also be saving these precious bogs and therefore, helping the environment.
You can find more information on composting at home by visiting the website www.norfolk.gov.uk/compost
Happy composting and thanks for helping the environment.
There will be more about what can be composted later as well as the intial small financial outlay to purchase a compost bin.
It's ideal to use rain water for compost tea, but if you have to use municipal water sources, you can let it sit for 24 hours with an aerator until you no longer smell chlorine.
Started a couple of weeks ago using a batch of worm castings, kitchen scraps and dried leaves and grass clippings, covered with plastic. It has started to heat up, a very good sign.

I'm going to make some Compost Tea for my ailing Coleus (and other plants). I took a cup and a half of compost, placed it in a old sock and will steep it in water for a day or so.
This is the composting area of our yard, just the way our son left it weeks ago. It's due for a turning but we are suppose to get rain. It will just have to continue to sit and wait. . .
Different angle showing the tight fit into the rear part of our yard, as out of the way as possible. The front measures four and a half feet wide and it's about 35" tall and 34" deep (give or take).
LOSE YOUR LAWN THE BAY-FRIENDLY WAY WORKSHOP
Saturday, April 26, 2014
Main Library
Presented by Bay-Friendly Educator and Master Composter Lori Caldwell, and Professional Landscape Designer Sue Oda
Workshop participants learned how to lose their lawns without tearing them out. Lori Caldwell and Sue Oda walked participants through the steps of converting their lawns without breaking their backs or their wallets, providing design and plant selection advice.
Lori Caldwell provided a hands-on demonstration of sheet mulching—an innovative technique of layering materials on top of your lawn, allowing you to plant right into it. Additionally, workshop participants learned how to participate in the local water agency’s water conservation rebate program.
Attendees received a free copy of the Bay-Friendly Gardening Guide and were entered into a drawing for additional garden gifts.
This workshop was presented as part of the Hayward Seed Lending Library, sponsored by the Friends of the Hayward Library. The Seed Lending Library operates as a community seed exchange. "Check out" a variety of vegetable and flower seeds to plant in your personal garden. In return, consider harvesting some of the seeds from mature plants for your own use and for sharing with the Seed Lending Library. It's easy to become a member or volunteer - learn more at: hayward-ca.gov/seeds. Join the Hayward Seed Lending Library Club's interactive forum on Facebook at www.facebook.com/groups/haywardseeds/

the worms get wild when getting coffee and start to reproduce...!!!!
i can't wait until next summer when the tomatoes on the balcony will get this compost as supplement in their pots.
and i don't have to drag the pots down the stairs and to the other side of town to the garden. and i don't have to buy many sacks of soil next spring, i just use the same soil and add this. incredible! why didn't i try this before?
i hope it will work. the worms are now 4 weeks old in this house, and they are still alive...
Today on FarmFu, I built a compost bin outside of the kitchen recycling center. The first thing I'll be throwing into the compost bin is the soil from last year's square foot garden. I will be moving that garden box to an ant free zone for spring planting.
Basil can finesse the compost bin while he's out there cleaning up all of those butts! BLECH!
We filled one of our compost tumblers with kitchen scraps which means
it is time to switch over to our other tumbler and let the original
break down. I also noticed that the worm bins had been depleted to a
scary degree. While showing some visitors our massive collection of
worms I realized there were very few. The worms got a compost refresh
as well. We will probably have to do the same rotation again in three
months.
I've been tempted to start pulling the volunteers out of our compost
and replanting them around the yard. Our worms bins seem to do a
excellent job of getting regular seedling volunteers. I think we have
a squash and sunflower volunteers here.
Compost extract. The extractor uses water and air to concentrate living biology in compost into liquid that can be used in sprayers, seeders, and other equipment to jump start soil biology. For my garden, I have two Smith & Hawkin compost bins. These stack into three levels and have a nice folding lid that goes on top. I picked them up for cheaper than usual from our county gardening group that promotes home composting. If you are interested in starting a compost, you should check your local area to see if they offer them at a discount.
