While the diagonal lines that are found all over the baground, foreground and within the sparks give this shot an active feeling, I am most impressed by the fact that I was able capture the sparks in focus, and let my aperture undefine the rest.
I chose this image because of the rule of thirds. I feel as if the proportions are very pleasing to the eye. Also, because I used studio lights for this shot, the lack of harsh shadows is also appealing.
I came up with an exercise for myself — free composition using simple geometric shapes. I start with a sketch of any shape in a random form and place on a square canvas, then try to develop the composition using light and shadow techniques and other shapes. Ideally, I want to achieve some sense of life, be it dynamics or mood. It feels like I’ve succeeded in some variations.
Composition 1a and 1b are the same subject. I was trying to show the effects of different shutter speeds.
This image I was trying to show the water as a flowing blurred effect. Having moved from the settings I used for Composition 1a I slowed the shutter speed down, resulting in the image becoming very over exposed and washed out. So I adjusted the Aperture to F22. This made the image better but still very bright.
To obtain the same image as Composition 1a I had to reduce the ISO to 100.
