In SeaTac, WA, near Des Moines Memorial Drive South, workers begin the process of stabilizing the ground. A large shaft drills into the ground, creating a deep hole that will be filled with concrete. This process is repeated until the ground is firm enough to build on top of it.
After the ground is stable, the crew will begin building a foundation for a bridge. This work is a part of the State Route 509 Completion project, which connects SR 509 to I-5 and improves the I-5/SR 516 interchange and local roads.
The SR 509 Completion project is part of the Puget Sound Gateway program, which completes the missing links in Washington state's highway and freight network.
Construction is nearing completion at Sac City's new Mohr Hall replacement building.
---
Sacramento City College is the oldest higher learning institution in the Los Rios Community College District and the Sacramento region. Built in the 1960s, the former Mohr Hall was a single story building on a prominent corner that differed from the rest of the campus architecture and occupying the space of two potential buildings. It housed the Physical Science and Nursing programs and had several deficiencies that could not be readily corrected. Our challenge was to create an interior environment facilitating modern lab, teaching and student gathering spaces with an exterior aesthetic responsive to the architectural vocabulary already established on campus – two stories, brick, concrete, and terracotta clay tile. The new Mohr Hall occupies the western portion of the existing site, leaving space for a future two-story building to the east.
The new building incorporates passive solar features such as deep overhangs and vertical fins to help shield from low sun angles. A series of outdoor gathering spaces and landscape features better connect with the existing circulation of campus. The centrally located building entrance incorporates a feature donor wall and benches using wood reclaimed from trees on site. Just outside the geology lab is an outdoor learning space that incorporates a rock garden from the colleges’ vast specimen collection.
Student gathering spaces are located on both floors, designed to allow students to casually interact with each other and faculty. Lab spaces are located on the east side allowing for access to the courtyard and outdoor spaces, including those utilized by allied health students for training.

The SR 509 Completion Project in the SeaTac/Des Moines area includes a new Veteran's Drive tunnel under I-5.
It's difficult to get a sense the size of the tunnel structures until you see it in person. However, this photo provides a better sense of their size compared to the white car on I-5 that is just visible in the break of the white fencing.
Each tunnel structure will carry two lanes of traffic. One is for westbound and the other for eastbound.
After completing the section of the tunnel that will be under the I-5 median, crews began the hard work of burying it under lots of dirt and gravel. You can’t just dump tons (literally) of dirt and rock on top because that could cause the tunnel structures to lean to one side or twist. Instead, crews add dirt and rock to one side, building it up about 4 feet at time, spread it out, compact it and then move to the other side and repeat the process. Then back to the other side and repeat again. They will keep up this process until the structures are completely covered.

On the other side of a new noise wall on Interstate 5 in south King County, workers adding new native plants to the slope next to South 208th Street. The work is part of the SR 509 Completion Project, which includes local street improvements. The noise wall will help reduce the sound of the freeway from people living on South 208th Street.
Native plants help reduce maintenance and herbicide costs These species are well-suited to weather and soil conditions and can grow without constant care. They can also help control erosion on slopes.
The completion project is being built under the Puget Sound Gateway Program. The Gateway program combines the State Route 509 Completion Project in King County and the SR 167 Completion Project in Pierce County to complete critical missing links in Washington’s highway and freight network.

Crews are removing and replacing a decommissioned Pierce County sewer line.
Removing this sewer line is part of the SR 167 Completion Project which completes SR 167 from its current end at North Meridian Avenue in Puyallup, extending it 6 miles to connect to SR 509 in the Port of Tacoma.
