Su nido es una masa voluminosa y compacta hecha de hojas secas y ramas, con una leve depresión central. Se coloca a una altura de 2 a 3 m. del suelo, sobre un matorral o una maraña de trepadoras.

Ponen de 3 a 5 huevos entre blanco y ante, con manchas y salpicaduras rojizas y lila claro. Se reproducen de abril a agosto o setiembre.

Alimentación

Forrajea al mover las hojas caídas y perforar huecos en la tierra con su pico. Se alimentan sobre todo de pequeños invertebrados, ranas, semillas, bayas y frutos de palmas. En ocasiones siguen a las hormigas arrieras o guerreras (Eciton sp.) para capturar las presas que huyen de ellas.

Comportamiento

Son solitarios.

Cuando se asustan, corren rápidamente y en raras ocasiones vuelan.

Habitat y Distribución

Habitat

Viven en bosques riparios, pantanos, bosques secundarios o bordes de bosques; se mantienen en áreas con vegetación sombreadas y densas. Asimismo, se introducen en cultivos y jardines de las casas cautelosamente.

Distribución

Es una especie residente, común localmente a lo largo del país, desde las partes bajas hasta por lo menos los 1400 m. Permanece en bosques remanentes en el borde de quebradas, en medio de pastizales o cultivos como en el caso del Valle Central.

Distribución fuera de Costa Rica

Se encuentra desde la parte central de México hasta el norte de Argentina.

Descripción

Descripción científica

Mide 38 cm. y pesa 460 grs. Es de cuello y patas largas; el pico y la cola son relativamente cortos.

Los adultos muestran la cabeza y el cuello grises con un tinte café oscuro en la nuca y la parte posterior de la coronilla. La garganta es blanca y el manto es oliva parduzco. El pecho y el costado son rufo acanelado y el abdomen, la rabadilla, las coberteras caudales y la cola son negras. El iris es rojo, el pico es amarillo verdoso brillante y las patas son rojo coral.

Los ejemplares inmaduros son similares, aunque presentan el abdomen negro tiznado con salpicaduras de color ante.

Compact Living by Milk Architecture & Design

This flat in an Edwardian Mansion block had been badly converted and needed respectful modernisation. Original sash windows, plaster cornices and deep skirtings were refurbished and classical room proportions restored.

In a small flat where every inch of space needed to work hard, ‘fat’ walls were built to accommodate services and storage. A wet room was installed to provide a spacious shower experience and full height library shelving was fitted in spare pockets in the hallway.

The bedroom was opened up entirely on one side to share space with the hallway and a wall sized walnut sliding door installed to close the room when visitors were present. The result is an elegant and efficient flat.
