South Chicago has one of the longest standing Mexican-American communities in Chicago. Every year on a Sunday in September, before or on the 16th,, Commercial Ave. is alive with Mexican festivities. Folkloric dancers spin in circles of vibrant colors as “Los Charros” or “Mexican Rodeo Cowboys” do rope tricks and throw candies to little children dressed in native wear.

Here's a few photos of some of the young folk from Westburn Youth Club enjoying basketball provided by UTD Sports Ltd.

The session was part of a number of taster classes taking place over the last few weeks, thanks to funding made available through Participatory Budgeting - where community members decide on how local funding is spent and what activities they want in their local community through a voting system.

The young people took part in a consultation event earlier in the year to decide what events they would like to take place in their local area - so far, they have enjoyed:

- Street dance & Hip Hop

- Hockey & Short Tennis

- Athletics & Badminton

- Cheerleader and Gymnastics

- Fun, Fitness and Rugby

Over the next few weeks, the young people will take part in a second consultation where they will decide what activities they would like to continue, and this will be rolled out over a continuous 12-week program.

Well done guys!

Roshini is a very healthy child now. Her anganwadi or play school is very close to her house and she benefits a lot from nutritious meals and colourful playthings. Her mom Sujatha is now well equipped to take good care of her. Through world vision India’s HEARTH program she learnt how to make low cost yet nutritious food. What more she trains other women in her community to make nutritious food from cheap ingredients like drum stick leaves, spinach, grated carrots and beet roots. They also have a 5 year old son Paven Kumar who loves drawing, he proudly shows off his elaborate art work in the walls of his house. Penta Rao now has a vision for his family and his community- “My vision is that every one works in unity for community development. All the children must be educated, they should not realize what I realized when it is too late.”

25 years ago Penta Rao’s parents came from Orissa to an urban slum in Vizak in the hope of finding greener pastures. Like Penta Rao they too were daily wage labourers, and there is not much difference economically in the two generations. But there is a significant change of attitude and mindset. Penta Rao who has only studied till the 9th standard says, “I will make sure my children study till whatever level they want to study.” Penta Rao worked as a mason for INR 14 a day since his 9th standard. “I am ashamed to say that I am only a 9th pass, and I regret how my youth was filled with hard work” he says.

Penta rao has witnessed the transformation of his community since world vision India’s arrival 10 years ago. Their community was largely water logged with affluents from nearby factories stagnant in various parts of their colony. There were no taps and only one private borewell from which they had to borrow water. Penta rao says, “World vision constructed a drainage system and used land fill to stop water from stagnating.” About a 100 families have benefitted over the years from this. There is also a sophisticated ‘Reverse Osmosis system’ in place to provide the community with clean drinking water. The children are the biggest beneficiaries as the cases of water borne diseases have greatly dwindled over the year. “Since there are no mosquitos breeding in stagnant waters, my children can sleep in peace,” says a very thankful Penta Rao. But the biggest transformation has been within many of the families. The Vishakapatnam Area Development program works to improve the quality of life of 44 communities of Visakhapatnam towards self-reliance and sustainable development through education, good health and economic development initiatives.

Sisson-South Whitney Historic District

Hartford, Connecticut

Listed 07/24/2013

Reference Number: 13000526

The Sisson-South Whitney Historic District is historically and architecturally significant as an example of mid-nineteenth- to early twentieth-century residential and neighborhood commercial development (Criterion A). The district is located along the western edge of the City of Hartford, an area that remained essentially rural as late as the early 1880s, yet felt the increasing pressure of suburban expansion between 1890 and 1930. The development of the Sisson-South Whitney Historic District is typical of Hartford's suburbs and is demonstrative of the effects of population increases and sprawl that followed economic growth and the build up of the city's central neighborhoods during the late nineteenth century. As such, the district is significant as an example of one of Hartford's working- and middle-class streetcar suburbs. Of particular importance is the developmental transition that redefined the character of the neighborhood during the 1910s and 1920s, thus making it architecturally and demographically unique from the historic districts that surround it. Initially marketed and developed as scenic enclave for Hartford's upper-middle class, the increased mobility provided by Hartford's trolley system meant that those of more modest means could also afford to live in this part of one of the city's premier neighborhoods. As such, the proposed district saw the increased construction of housing and businesses oriented towards the needs of the working and middle classes. The district is a highly intact, architecturally cohesive neighborhood of single- and multi-family homes, small apartment buildings, as well as commercial blocks, that reflect the significant residential architectural styles of the midnineteenth to early twentieth century (Criterion C). Italianate, Late-Gothic Revival, Folk Victorian, Queen Anne, Shingle, Colonial Revival, Neoclassical Revival, Beaux Arts, Italian Renaissance Revival, and modem vernacular forms, can be found, many being demonstrative of the frequency with which designers combined a number of influences to create eclectically-styled homes. A number of local builders and prominent architects designed and constructed homes in the district, contributing further to the significance of this historic neighborhood.

22nd Annual Holiday Party Held on Christmas Eve.

12.24.16 - More Than 1,200 Paterson Children at NJCDC’s Holiday Party
