In Armenia, women are more likely than men to hold higher education degrees, yet they have a much lower presence in government, both locally and nationally.
One organic way of getting women into politics is by starting at the local level. UNDP’s Women in Local Democracy programme has been working since 2012 to promote equality between women and men, including equal representation of women in decision-making processes.

Shakib is a confident young man today. He is a youth volunteer working with people with disabilities in the DG Halli area of World Vision’s Nithyajeeva ADP, Bangalore.A polio infection at childhood left Shakib with a physical disability, making him understand first-hand the challenges faced by people with disabilities.
Born in a family of seven children, Shakib had to face a lot of struggles during ...his childhood. He could not afford to study beyond the twelfth standard and had to work to support his family. He struggled to find a job and was dejected by the rejection and discrimination by society because of his disability.
It was at this time that World Vision ADP staff met Shakib. They counselled him and helped him to learn English and train in computer Skills.World Vision’s project was also able to provide him with a leg calliper to improve his mobility. With the newly acquired skills and confidence, Shakib was able to get a job and started earning Rs. 5000 a month. His confidence grew as he was now able to support his family and save money for his sister’s marriage.
Motivated to empower others like himself, Shakib now volunteers with World Vision India. He is involved in raising awareness on the rights of people with disabilities.Supported by World Vision’s ADP staff, one of his goals is to ensure that at least 300 disabled children and adults in the community receive government health, education and employment benefits to which they are entitled by helping them get the right medical certification.
He is also keen that the confidence of young people with disabilities is built through employment. To this end, he has established computer data entry work programmes.

We plant up to 40,000 trees every year in the Sarawak rainforest, and we work with the Penan People who have set up a co-operative to help them to replant 10,000 trees per year, thus both countering deforestation and supporting the Penan people in a process of sustainable development.
Layla Mohamed, 23, fled the Mogadishu conflict with her husband and 5 children, but now finds herself fighting to save her 1 year-old baby boy, Zam Zam.. World Vision staff discovered her in Muuse Rootile IDP camp, a collection of 6 smaller camps for drought and conflict refugees on the outskirts of Garowe, Puntland, Somalia. Wema Adere (wearing WV t-shirt), Nutrition Manager, and Benson Otrero, Health Project Manager could immediately tell how severe the baby's condition was when they saw his "old man" features. A measurement of his upper circumference confirmed that he is severely malnourished. They gave the mother Plumpy Nut to feed him and urged her to take him immediately to the camp center for malnourished children. Wema reminded the mother not to neglect regular breastfeeding. Layla replied, "I don't sleep enough because I am so worried. I wake up in the night and give drink to the baby."

Here's a few photos of some of the young folk from Westburn Youth Club enjoying basketball provided by UTD Sports Ltd.
The session was part of a number of taster classes taking place over the last few weeks, thanks to funding made available through Participatory Budgeting - where community members decide on how local funding is spent and what activities they want in their local community through a voting system.
The young people took part in a consultation event earlier in the year to decide what events they would like to take place in their local area - so far, they have enjoyed:
- Street dance & Hip Hop
- Hockey & Short Tennis
- Athletics & Badminton
- Cheerleader and Gymnastics
- Fun, Fitness and Rugby
Over the next few weeks, the young people will take part in a second consultation where they will decide what activities they would like to continue, and this will be rolled out over a continuous 12-week program.
Well done guys!
Trekking through the jungle to reach the Penan people in Sarawak - visitors to the area arrive through our responsible travel and ethical tourism partner organisation Adventure Alternative, and we help the local community to benefit greatly from this, ensuring that the slow but steady flow of tourists contributes to a community led process of sustainable development.
