Architecture for Humanity, a USA-based nonprofit organization, collaborated with FIFA and Streetfootballworld to build 20 community centers and associated soccer pitches across Africa. These centers benefit local nonprofit organizations tackling social issues in their communities. In leading the design and construction management of each project, Architecture for Humanity strove to incorporate the work of local artists to promote local art and culture and support artists in difficult economic environments. Here Denisile, a multi-media artist, works on his mosaics mural that celebrates the facility’s spirit.

Some of the children at the Ulamba Centre. Ulamba currently houses 38 orphaned children and includes dorm rooms, staff quarters, a kitchen, guesthouse, toilets and showers. We have also built a community hall, an Early Child Development Centre, a clinic, play area and developed a shamba for growing crops on the site. We provide the running costs for feeding, clothing and looking after the children and paying for the staff, plus we also assist with the management of the local committee which undertakes the day to day running of the place.

Pilsen murals are inspired by the works of famous Mexican muralists such as Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco and Jose David Alfaro Siqueiros. The murals painted on the rail viaduct predate the California (San Francisco) movement that is famous and well documented. Pilsen muralists including Hector Duarte had the privilege of having Siqueiros as a teacher.

In Armenia, women are more likely than men to hold higher education degrees, yet they have a much lower presence in government, both locally and nationally.
One organic way of getting women into politics is by starting at the local level. UNDP’s Women in Local Democracy programme has been working since 2012 to promote equality between women and men, including equal representation of women in decision-making processes.
