A handful of peanuts will nearly instantly attract a dozen or so of these sassy, shiny black beauties to our back yard. Our squirrels fight with them over the banquet. The Common Raven is the largest member of the order Passeriformes (the songbirds, or perching birds).

The common myna (Acridotheres tristis), sometimes spelled mynah, also sometimes known as "Indian myna", is a member of the family Sturnidae (starlings and mynas) native to Asia. An omnivorous open woodland bird with a strong territorial instinct, the myna has adapted extremely well to urban environments.
The range of the common myna is increasing at such a rapid rate that in 2000 the IUCN Species Survival Commission declared it one of the world's most invasive species and one of only three birds in the top 100 species that pose an impact to biodiversity, agriculture and human interests. In particular, the species poses a serious threat to the ecosystems of Australia where it was named "The Most Important Pest/Problem".

On the same night, there was a second, lighter individual.
I had heard reports of one or two of these at Marton Mere in the last week, but I hadn't seen any yet. I think part of the problem is, I hadn't realised how small they are. I saw just one last summer, but from a great distance. Today I was sat in a bird hide, hoping the cute coot chicks I'd seen would return to open water, when a tiny bird fluttered across the water and landed on a rock in front of me. I assumed immediately it was a wagtail - what else could it be? But the moment it landed I knew: it was a common sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos). So very small, if it hadn't arrived in such an obvious way, I would never have seen it. It moved off and fed on the muddy shore, and was very well camouflaged in the cut reed stumps.
