Common Lungwort in the grounds of Pontefract castle,This plant would have been grown in the castle grounds for century's and was said to treat diseases of the Lungs. It would have been used in medieval medicine. The leaves apparently contain Silicic acid which is known to improve elasticity of the lungs and it seems the plant does have proven medical properties.

It also did very well to keep flowering through the last couple of weeks under the ice and snow.

Pontia protodice. As long as we have January butterflies I think I'll keep uploading photos of them . (At the beginning of December I had assumed, incorrectly, that I was through with butterfly shots until March, like last year.)

A Common Redpoll in my front yard. Now that I have a bird feeder out there I get to spend a bit more time shooting these quick little guys which is good "Reflex Photography." I call it Reflex Photography because its fast paced and I think more reflex than anything.

In North America, the distinct white chin patch helps to tell this female merganser from the similar Red-breasted Merganser female.

Loons are water birds, only going ashore to mate and incubate eggs. Their legs are placed far back on their bodies, allowing efficient swimming but only awkward movement on land.

The Common Loon is flightless for a few weeks after molting all of its wing feathers at the same time in midwinter.
