Common Ringlet (Coenonympha tullia; Hodges#4582) - Lamoine State Park, Lamoine, Maine

This guy was a first for me, and it reminded me so much so of the Small Heath (Coenonympha pamphilus) butterflies I had seen in Ireland that it make it more difficult to find an ID since here in the U.S. "Heath" is not in any part of their name

(though they are indeed related).

Americans!

I guess it must be in our DNA to be different.

Note: This guy appears to be subspecies Coenonympha tullia inornata (a.k.a. the Inornate Ringlet)

Wimbledon Common, March 2009

For the first time I was able to get a decent shot of this gorgeous duck, so beautiful!

The eerie calls of Common Loons echo across clear lakes of the northern wilderness. Summer adults are regally patterned in black and white. In winter, they are plain gray above and white below, and you’ll find them close to shore on most seacoasts and a good many inland reservoirs and lakes. Common Loons are powerful, agile divers that catch small fish in fast underwater chases.

Many thanks to you ALL for the views, faves and comments you make on my shots it is very appreciated

Common wood pigeons are a very common sight in my rear yard particularly early in the mornings.

The common wood pigeon is classified as LC (Least Concern) on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) conservation list.

There is something quite relaxing photography the frogs spawning, love the constant background croaking and the fights which break out with the males when a female arrives.

It does also amaze me the number of people who walk past feet away and don't hear the noise or see the commotion going on. It's been quite an education for quite a few of the walkers who asked what I was up to with my camera, always good to make people aware of what's literally at their feet

WHITLOW-GRASS (Erophila verna). XVI century, Gerard 1597. E.verna was known to 16th century herbalists as *paronychia vulgaris*, from its use in curing a whitlow (Latin *paronychia*). Hence Gerard's coinage for a plant which was too inconspicuous to have acquired common names.

(from A Dictionary of English Plant Names. G Grigson. 1974)

'Gerard' refers to John Gerard (1545-1607), London apothecary. Author/editor of *The Herball or General Historie of Plantes* which based on a Dutch herbal by Rembert Dodoens (1517-1585). Many English plant names first appear in the *Herball*, which was evidently read by Shakespeare.

The Common Chiffchaff, or simply the Chiffchaff, (Phylloscopus collybita) is a common and widespread leaf-warbler which breeds in open woodlands throughout northern and temperate Europe and Asia.

It is a migratory passerine which winters in southern and western Europe, southern Asia and north Africa. Greenish-brown above and off-white below, it is named onomatopoeically for its simple chiff-chaff song. It has a number of subspecies, some of which are now treated as full species. The female builds a domed nest on or near the ground, and assumes most of the responsibility for brooding and feeding the chicks, whilst the male has little involvement in nesting, but defends his territory against rivals, and attacks potential predators.

A small insectivorous bird, it is subject to predation by mammals, such as cats and mustelids, and birds, particularly hawks of the genus Accipiter.

The Chiffchaff is a small, dumpy, 10–12 centimetres (4 in) long leaf warbler. The male weighs 7–8 grammes (0.28–0.31 oz), and the female 6–7 grammes (0.25–0.28 oz).

I was stalking a damselfly through the thickets when I found a Common Yellowthroat pair near their nest. See the female with food behind the male? I backed off and she took the food into the shrub.
