'ADEPT CLIMBER OF TREES.'
This beauty had quite a busy afternoon around one end of the island. Between sessions spent foraging along the bank or chasing off another intruding Moorhen, it would retreat into some overhanging branches. It's climbing ability was impressive to watch, effortless and agile for such a large bird. It would use the place as a safe retreat where it could preen and doze in peace.

Common or Central African Warthog [Phacochoerus Africanus]
Safaris seem to be mostly about the cats and some of the more engaging species, such as elephants and giraffe, with many of the other animals hardly getting a look in when it comes to photos. There seems to be some sort of unofficial pecking order, and usually down near the bottom of that list is the good old common warthog, affectionately known as the pumba after the Disney character in the Lion King. They are also regarded as one of the 'ugly five'. This is probably the main reason you rarely see photos of them, plus the fact that they usually turn tail as soon as they see you, so I was rather surprised that this female was happy to pose, with her piglet.

'HOT WEATHER REMEDIES'.
This heatwave summer has been quite a talking point and has presented many challenges to both the human population and to the natural world.
The Moorhen shown above demonstrated its way of dealing with the high temperature one afternoon. It kept to the shaded areas beneath shrubs and held both wings well away from its body. Even when it walked short distances, the wings were flexed outwards. At first, I thought it was drying off after bathing, but on closer observation I could see this was not the case...its plumage was completely dry.
Based on the past few months, I'm pretty certain we can all relate to the Moorhen's desire for shade and an airflow under the 'pits'!

Common Grackles are large, lanky blackbirds with long legs and long tails. The head is flat and the bill is longer than in most blackbirds, with the hint of a downward curve. In flight, the wings appear short in comparison to the tail. Common Grackles appear black from a distance, but up close their glossy purple heads contrast with bronzy-iridescent bodies. A bright golden eye gives grackles an intent expression. (Cornell)
Though I've still got plenty of shots from out Norwegian trip and will certainly be posting some more, I thought it time to post a few more recent shots. This Common Darter obligingly stopped to rest on a rose bud in the Rose Garden at Dunham.
A trip to WWT Slimbridge mid October. Weather was sunny intervals.
This Common Pochard swam out from the undergrowth on South Lake and started to dive feeding off the bottom.
The Common Pochard, or Pochard, is a medium sized Diving Duck which feed by either diving or dabbling.
They often mix with other diving ducks, such as the Tufted Duck, to which they are known to hybridise.

Common Twayblade / neottia ovata. Hartslock NR, Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. 31/05/18.
Although I had seen Common Twayblade before in other parts of the country, they were still a pleasing find on my 'orchid twitch' in late May..
It was convenient that a small colony at Hartslock were growing in an accessible place with plenty of light. This helped to enliven the easily overlooked green flowers and make their citric green, notched lips really stand out.

If you can relate to the words quoted above by Martin Buber, (Jewish philosopher 1878-1965), you could easily imagine that this humble frog was saying something of immense magnitude when i photographed it!
