The common waxbill (Estrilda astrild), also known as the St Helena waxbill, is a small passerine bird belonging to the estrildid finch family. It is native to sub-Saharan Africa but has been introduced to many other regions of the world and now has an estimated global extent of occurrence of 10,000,000 km2. It is popular and easy to keep in captivity.

The common moorhen, also known as the waterhen or swamp chicken, is a bird species in the rail family. It is distributed across many parts of the Old World. The common moorhen lives around well-vegetated marshes, ponds, canals and other wetlands.

‘EARLY SUMMER GREENS’.
It seems to have been a great year for Common Twayblade orchids and I've found them growing in good numbers in many of the places I've visited. Without doubt, the most spectacular for me were seen in Homefield Wood where they grew in tall, densely packed groups.
My image was made on a hot sunny afternoon on the last day of May. It was impossible to satisfactorily photograph this group as a whole because of their situation and a profusion of other plants and grasses. I decided to point the lens inside the edge of the group and take some experimental shots....this is one of them.

A common grackle that was foraging along the shores of the Seine river... picture taken from my kayak.
(From All About Birds).. Common Grackles are blackbirds that look like they've been slightly stretched. They're taller and longer tailed than a typical blackbird, with a longer, more tapered bill and glossy-iridescent bodies. Grackles walk around lawns and fields on their long legs or gather in noisy groups high in trees, typically evergreens. They eat many crops (notably corn) and nearly anything else as well, including garbage. In flight their long tails trail behind them, sometimes folded down the middle into a shallow V shape.

Common Tern in amongst several circling Black Headed Gulls hunting insects on the wing.

Mixed series of five. Merry Christmas everyone. The local seals have grown to six in total, including an amorous male whose advances were not appreciated.

The Common Sergeant Butterfly is native to South and Southeast Asia. The topside, is black with white bars and spots whereas the underside is bright tan with white and black markings.
Seen in Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World.

Another new one on our local lake - a Common Pochard. It was nice to see it in amongst the Tufted ducks this morning
Another shot of the common wasp I posted last month (www.flickr.com/photos/pogspix/15020779282/). This is a slightly different pov. I like the details in its legs and feet that you don't really see without a macro image. (The image is a bit noisy because it's quite a crop. I think.)
