The common spangle gall wasp produces a small, disc-shaped growth, or 'gall', on the undersides of oak leaves. Inside the gall, the larvae of the wasp feed on the host tissues, but cause little damage.

One of those cases where the name is appropriate - this is the common goldenyeyed duck. This and the last two shots were with my first session with my new 100-400L mark II. The Peru shots were with a rented lens. After my car was broken into and my 400L stolen, I decided to go ahead and buy the 100-400 mark II. Shoreline Lake, Mountain View, CA, USA. Dec 10 2016.

This little member of the warbler family was caught in a mist net, banded and released after being thoroughly examined, weighed, and measured as part of an effort to gather scientific data on the species.

A pair of Common Cranes flying low over the Tack Piece fields..
The Common Cranes are part of the Great Crane Project at Slimbridge. The Cranes are hatched from eggs and when at a suitable age are released on the Somerset Levels. During the winter months they choose to come back to Slimbridge to spend time on the outer fields. The leg rings are used to identify and track the individual birds. There are a couple of Cranes that have no leg rings and therefore must have been born wild. The Cranes are free to come and go at their own free will.
Apparently on the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica, the taxi drivers often see the most wildlife, and if it were not a cabbie I would never have spotted this beautiful cryptic bird perched on top of a fence post, perfectly blending to become an extension of the post itself.
I saw a few birds flying rapidly down the Nicomen Slough. I thought they were Buffleheads but turned out they were Common Goldeneye.

Adult common gulls are 40–46 cm long, noticeably smaller than the herring gull, and slightly smaller than the ring-billed gull, also differing from the latter in its shorter, more tapered bill with a more greenish shade of yellow, as well as being unmarked during the breeding season. The body is grey above and white below. The legs are greenish-yellow. In winter, the head is streaked grey, and the bill often has a poorly defined blackish band near the tip (sometimes sufficiently obvious to cause confusion with ring-billed gull). They have black wingtips with large white "mirrors". Young birds have scaly black-brown upperparts and a neat wing pattern, and grey legs. They take two to three years to reach maturity. The call is a high-pitched "laughing" cry.

My favorite warbler hunting spot is not accessible for a few days because of the World Triathlon Final taking place in Hawrelak Park here in Edmonton..
I visited marshy places west of here and had a great day. I was hoping to capture a Common Yellowthroat in that habitat and I actually did. They have always been a tough bird for me. More photos of other birds caught today to follow.

The Orb Web Spider Araneus Diadematus is a common garden spider, which spins a large web in relation to its own size; normal size range 8mm to 20mm. The males are significantly smaller than the females and male fatalities can occur during courtship. Eggs are laid in the autumn and the female will guard her eggs; refusing to leave them to hunt, until she dies. In the following May, newly hatched spiders are coloured yellow with a dark patch on the abdomen.
