Common Blackbird

This is our Backyard Blackies' fledgling.
Unfortunately, they had managed to time the first flight with the arrival of the gardeners, and the little bird had no idea what to do.
Somehow it escaped to a corner of the fenceline among some bushes.
Eventually took up residence in the small orange tree we have, and was fed there.
Tough little dude survived to grow to maturity.
(PS It visited us this morning—29-01-25—for breakfast all dressed up in its best finery. I think it is a female)
A pair of common eiders lives in the enclosure of the Humboldt penguins at our zoo. This is the male. The common eider is the largest duck in Europe. It reaches a length of 50 to 71 cm (20 to 28 in) and a weight of 0.81 to 3.04 kg (1.8 to 6.7 lb). The male is very handsome but difficult to photograph as the eye is surrounded by dark feathers . I'm quite pleased that I have managed a shot where the eye is really visible.

Fully focussed, the Common Buzzard spread its wings to maintain balance, as it perched on prey. The image was made in a woodland clearing, in Spring this year.

This week is going to be moth week for me. I set up a moth trap in my backyard to try to get a varied amount of species. I love moths as I think most look like cute little aliens.

'THERE'S SAFETY IN NUMBERS.'
A solitary Greenshank captured sleeping at the edge of a tidal creek, unfazed by the close proximity of c30 Brent Geese. It was possibly using them as a security cover. The ever alert geese would be sure to sound the alarm in the event of any threat.

Common house gecko inside the house. I have quite a few of them living inside the house and outside of the house. This one has lost part of its tail possibly caused by me turning air conditioner that i think it lives in. I have another larger gecko that lives in the house that caught killed and removed a centipede that was crawling near my bed which was good because one night i was woken up by another very large centipede crawling on me, not a nice experience.

Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis) were indeed a common sight on our 9 day cruise around the Hebrides. On a number of occasions we spotted them distantly and they headed straight for our boat in order to bow-ride. For some reason they seem to enjoy swimming on the pressure wave in front of boats, even though our boat only travelled at a stately 8 knots. They were very difficult to photograph well when they were bow-riding as you were looking straight down on them, but it was a great experience as they were so close I could hear them making a wonderful clicking noise like you hear in Flipper films. Although Flipper was a Bottlenose Dolphin so presumably had a different sound.

In darker weather, like on this pic, the colors of this beautiful bird are much more visible.
It has been another good year for the Kingfishers in our area. Luckily !!!

Meijer Gardens butterfly exhibit officially starts Thursday. Every now and then a butterfly lands on the ground. They are usually spotted and picked up by the volunteers before they get stepped on.
