One Starling's impersonation of remaining tight lipped came to mind when I reviewed this shot!
Another day and a 2nd visit to WWT Slimbridge on the 10th February. The weather was much cloudier than forecast.

The female is mainly brown with an orange bill.
Mallards are Britain's most common surface feeding duck. It lives in a variety of habitats and many have become tame due to living near human populations.

Female Common Eider ducks outnumbered males whenever I came across any. I don't know whether they were early breeders whose young had hatched or maybe they were non-breeders.
I loved the way groups of 6-8 females took responsibility for the care and protection of creches of ducklings ... just like kind, reliable aunties!
Quiet lakes and wetlands come alive with the breezy whistle of the American Wigeon, a dabbling duck with pizzazz. Breeding males have a green eye patch and a conspicuous white crown, earning them the name "bald plate." Females are brushed in warm browns with a gray-brown head and a smudge around the eye. Noisy groups congregate during fall and winter, plucking plants with their short goose-like bill from wetlands and fields or nibbling plants from the water's surface. Despite being common, their populations are declining. The best time to see American Wigeons in the Lower 48 is from August through April. The oldest American Wigeon reported was at least 21 years and 4 months old. (allaboutbirds.org)

December 2024: The Common Green Magpie, my nemesis bird, finally seen and photographed. It is absolutely stunning and is described aptly by eBird: A neon-colored, noisy, highly social bird of lowland and mid-altitude subtropical forests. Surprisingly difficult to spot as it glides from tree to tree in the middle and upper levels of the forest. Memorable if seen well: bright green with chestnut-tipped wings, a black mask, and a coral-red bill - Sattal, Uttarakhand, India 🇮🇳
For those who don’t chase birds A “nemesis bird” is known as follows : “it keeps you going back and remains tantalizingly out-of-reach. It's a species that eludes you after multiple attempts, especially if the bird was or should have been there”. I have been chasing this bird on multiple occasions on visits to Thailand…now I need to find a new nemesis bird!

Common or not, this is a striking warbler with its black mask and whitish forehead band that keeps low to the ground and avoids open observation. Lake St. Clair.
We enjoyed the sight of Common Loons swimming close to shore at Sandy Lake in Prince Albert National Park. What beautiful symmetry.

The Common Kestrel is a falcon found in India. It was fun to spot and photograph these guys! I needed a nice off road drive around the mountains to get to them!
