A 2nd trip to Slimbridge in Gloucestershire on the 21st January.
I was in for a shock as ALL but one of the lagoons/ponds were frozen hard and there were very few wild birds to be seen out on the fields.
One of a flight of 4 Common Cranes flying over the outer fields at Slimbridge. This one came the closest.
The Common Cranes are part of the Great Crane Project at Slimbridge. The Cranes are hatched from eggs and when at a suitable age are released on the Somerset Levels. During the winter months they choose to come back to Slimbridge to spend time on the outer fields. The leg rings are used to identify and track the individual birds. There are a couple of Cranes that have no leg rings and therefore must have been born wild. The Cranes are free to come and go at their own free will.
There were no visible leg rings on this Crane.
While camping over the weekend the black flies, but particularly the mosquitos, were swarming and thirsty. Humans weren't the only animals on the menu.
This Common loon and I were suffering together as I tried to photograph it. Every so often it would dip its head under water and give it a shake to try and shake to insects away.

A common waxbill in amongst the vines of Spier vineyard near Stellenbosch. These birds are native to South Africa, but have been introduced to parts of Europe. Saw a small flock today on the banks of the Ria Formosa near Faro, but didn't manage to get a shot off.
I love the bandit mask worn by these birds.
Whilst taking photos of this common blue I actually saw the little fly on the bottom of the grass stem fly in and land
Finally caught up to the Common Yellowthroat on one of my outdoor ventures. I found the female easier to photograph as she wasn't moving around so much. The male, on the other hand, just couldn't sit still.
They look a little different this side of the pond. Doesn't stop them from being complete bastards though. Very aggressive species. This is the only thing I'm scared of! you should see me run like a child when one starts buzzing around me.
This guy is covered in pollen, must have been feeding on nectar recently. Look at those mega jaws! Perfectly capable of tearing wood from trees to build nests.

The second generation of the smaller butterflies is starting to emerge a Summer Leys and you don't get much fresher than this individual. This hopefully means plenty of macro photo opportunities for the next month or so :)
Common Blackbird

My backyard Blackie has not felt the need during the cold weather to make an early start on her yearly project.
But that all changed the other morning as she made trip after trip to the gutter to pull out a good supply of moss, mud and leaves.
Fickle that she is, she seems to be building in a backyard about two houses away.

I didn't see what happened to the fish as the bird flew off chased by a number of others, all hoping to steal the food.

Common Starling / sternus vulgaris. Wells, Norfolk. 15/01/22.
'BOYS WILL BE BOYS.'
A trio of male Starlings hanging out in Wells Harbour car park, Norfolk. Just across the road were several fish and chip shops doing a brisk trade with visitors. The birds knew this was a rich picking ground for food scraps!
