Common Starling / sturnus vulgaris. Northumberland. 18/06/24.
'STRAND LINE SCAVENGER.'
This Starling had an easy time finding food along the strand line of a Northumbrian beach. Judging by its dull coloured beak, I think it was an older, non-breeding bird.

I've spent a lot of spare time photographing butterflies this summer as its been an amazing year for them and I waited along time for these shots.... Common blue covered in dew. This one had actually cleaned some of the droplets away from its eyes and surrounding area.
Common Greenfinch

I was introducing myself to a Black-shouldered Kite, when a Greenfinch came in for look.
Satisfied I was not able to talk finch, it quickly sped off.
Spent the morning searching storm drains with my youngest. It was fantastic to see his excited face when we fished them out.
First trip of 2022 was to WWT Slimbridge on 5th Jan. Weather was fine and there was plenty of Bird activity.
It was also really great to catch up with fellow photographers some of who i hadn’t seen for 2+ years or more. I also met some new photographers. It really was a good start to the year.

The Common Pochard is a medium-sized diving duck.
In winter and spring, male Pochards are very distinctive. They have a bright reddish-brown head, a black breast and tail and a pale grey body.

I am fortunate in that the Common Yellowthroat is still quite common in the areas that I regularly bird in. Other birds like the Marsh Wren are less common in those same areas as they once were. Some birds seem to have seasonal highs and lows others I rarely see now like the Eastern Kingbird and far fewer Annas Hummingbirds than before.
I know where they hang out now. :-) Find a nice quiet day, no nearby frisbee golfers or fishermen, wear camo and squat/sit quietly hiding behind my camo-dressed lens, and I might just get a moment with them at this local regional park in Chino, CA. Gallinule in non-breeding color, I might add.
A common buzzard was keeping a look-out roadside when I drove by. Birds of prey are usually very skittish here in Finland so I was happy to take a couple of pictures.

Common Mergansers spend the breeding season in northern forested habitats near large lakes and rivers.
Common Mergansers spend much of their time afloat, loafing, fishing, and often sleeping on open water.

Finally caught up to the Common Yellowthroat on one of my outdoor ventures. I found the female easier to photograph as she wasn't moving around so much. The male, on the other hand, just couldn't sit still.
This is one of my favourite common blue photos from this year. Not only did I find two on the same piece of grass but also against a very colourful background :D
A common waxbill in amongst the vines of Spier vineyard near Stellenbosch. These birds are native to South Africa, but have been introduced to parts of Europe. Saw a small flock today on the banks of the Ria Formosa near Faro, but didn't manage to get a shot off.
I love the bandit mask worn by these birds.

'A SOLITARY GREENSHANK.'
When I first found the elegant Greenshank, it was actively feeding and completely unfazed by a large group of Brent Geese nearby.
Interestingly, whilst they bickered with each other, readily adopting threat postures, not once did they react to the little wader!

Common Fumitory / fumaria officinalis. Nottinghamshire. 23/05/22.
'APHID MAGNET.'
I was blown away by this, my first sighting of Common Fumitory. Regarded by some as a weed, what fabulous two-toned little flowers it had! Each one had a prominent spur, many of which are shown in this image.
I've read that the flowers are very rarely pollinated by insects, so are self-fertilisers. Despite this, the plant seems a firm favourite with aphids. If viewed large, you will see c10 clinging to the stem and presumably feeding?
