Budgerigar

Scientific Name: Melopsittacus undulatus

Description: Since its introduction into captivity, the Budgerigar (or 'budgie') has been bred into a variety of colour forms, including pure white, blue, yellow, mauve, olive and grey. In the wild, Budgerigars are small green and yellow parrots, with black barring above, and a small patch of blue on the cheek. The male has a dark blue cere (skin at the base of the upper mandible surrounding the nostrils). In the female this is brownish when breeding and light blue otherwise. Young Budgerigars are similar to the adult birds, but are duller and have a dark brown eye (which is white or yellow in adults).

Distribution: The Budgerigar occurs naturally throughout much of mainland Australia, but is absent from the far south-west, the north of the Northern Territory, Tasmania and the majority of the east coast.

Habitat: Budgerigars are nomadic and large flocks of birds can be seen in most open habitat types, but seldom far from water. Very large flocks, numbering occasionally in the tens of thousands, are seen after a season of abundant rainfall and food. Flocks are usually much smaller, however, and range from as few as three birds up to 100 or more. Birds in a flock fly in a characteristic undulating manner.

Seasonal movements: Nomadic.

Feeding: Budgerigars feed almost exclusively on the seeds of native herbs and grasses, such as porcupine grass and saltbush. Seeds are mostly eaten from the ground and the bulk of drinking and feeding activity is in the morning.

Breeding: Budgerigars tend to breed in response to rainfall, and may produce several broods if conditions permit. The nest is a bare cavity in a suitable tree branch or in the trunk. The female sits on the round white eggs. As with other parrots, young budgerigars are born naked and helpless.

Calls: The contact call is a warbling "chirrup"; "zit" is given in alarm.

Minimum Size: 17cm

Maximum Size: 18cm

Average size: 18cm

Average weight: 28g

Breeding season: Any time of year when conditions suitable

Clutch Size: 6 to 8 eggs

Nestling Period: 35 days

The Eastern Spinebill sometimes hovers like a hummingbird when feeding on the nectar from flowers. Most Australian honeyeaters feed on flowers from a perched position.

Description: The Eastern Spinebill is most easily recognised by its very long, fine, down-curved beak and energetic flight, during which its white outer tail feathers are prominent. Males have a grey-black crown which extends in a black line on either site of the breast. The breast and throat are white, with a rufous patch in the centre of the throat. The wings and lower back are dark grey and the underparts and upper back are buff. Females are similar to males but have less distinct markings.

Similar species: Crescent Honeyeater, Tawny-crowned Honeyeater, Western Spinebill (in Western Australia)

Distribution: The Eastern Spinebill's range is generally east of the Great Dividing Range from Cooktown in Queensland to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia

Habitat: The Eastern Spinebill prefers heath, forest and woodland.

Seasonal movements: Largely sedentary, but undergoes some local movements, especially away from higher elevations in autumn/winter.

Feeding: The Eastern Spinebill feeds on insects and nectar while perched or while hovering. Nectar is obtained from a wide array of flowers, including grevilleas, but its beak is particularly well-suited to extracting nectar from tubular flowers such as epacrids.

Breeding: The Eastern Spinebill's nest is a small cup of twigs, grass and bark, combined with hair and spider's web, built in a tree fork, generally between 1 and 5 metres from the ground. Only the female builds the nest and incubates the eggs, but both parents feed the young when they hatch.

Calls: Short, repeated, high-pitched piping.

Minimum Size: 15cm

Maximum Size: 16cm

Average size: 16cm

Average weight: 11g

Breeding season: August to January

Clutch Size: 2

Incubation: 14 days

Nestling Period: 14 days

After reading all the comments about the flowers I've been posting, I'm guessing that in some parts of North America, things are dark, cold,drab, depressing, and/or a downer. Well, not much I can do about that - especially after the week of torrential rain, plus lightening and thunder (although, after 20+ years of nothing like that, I loved every minute) - but I know that thanks toi our weather, there will be a whole new crop of flowers starting as soon as we dry out a bit. But, now I also have a backlog of birds, and today I give you one of the "rarer" birds where I live, the Downy Woodpecker. Btw, it's only rare because I've only seen four in the last 20+ years, but uit's range is most of North America.

The Downy can be confused with the Hairy and the Hairy with the Nuttall's, but I have a suffcient number of all to give you a pretty good idea. Maybe I'll have a Woodpecker Wednesday. Not a bad idea. Okay, this is the first WW.

The downy woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) is a species of woodpecker, the smallest in North America. Length ranges from 14 to 18 cm (5.5 to 7.1 in). Downy woodpeckers primarily live in forested areas throughout the United States and Canada, with the exception of deserts in the southwest and the northern tundra. The bird nests in tree cavities and feeds primarily on insects, although it supplements its diet with seeds and berries. The downy woodpecker is very similar in appearance to the hairy woodpecker, although they are not closely related. Why they evolved this way cannot be explained with confidence; it may be relevant that the species exploit rather different-sized foodstuffs and do not compete very much ecologically. Well, I can explain it with confidence. I'll be wrong, but I might be the only one who can obfuscate with such skill ... or use the word obfuscate more than once every five years. I can use the word, but better still, I have been known to practice obfuscation every week. I'm proud of my limited skills.

Anyway, I found all four of my Downy Woodpeckers on Mt. Dalo between 2010 and 2014. I misidentified it four times as a Nuttall's woodpecker. And then did that again with my one and only Hairy and the Nuttall's. If I could get all three on one branch, the differences would be obvious. I'll see what I can do when I post the Nuttall's and the other two opn the same Flickr page.

Did I tell you that the Downy is NA's smallest woodpecker? It is, but all measurements are given in metrics, and I feel that you should reall do some pf this work yourselves. This particular Downy was found hammering away on an old pear tree new Old Borges Ranch. One day, if I ever see a member of the Borges familll hav to ask what the bird life was 50 or 60 years ago. The downy woodpecker is mainly black on the upperparts and wings, with a white back, throat and belly and white spotting on the wings. There is one white bar above the eye, and one below. They have a black tail with white outer feathers barred with black. Adult males have a red patch on the back of the head whereas juvenile birds display a red cap.

Enjoy a little more color which I'll provide in everthing but the weather. Flowers, blue birds, and insects have already started to return, and I plan on posting more color from old and just the last two years at the Garden. The past 23 years have been the best in so many ways. Certainly, digital photography; long lenses on the SX Canon series allowing me to move from flowers to sparrows and raptors; great landscape capabilities at the other end... and, honestly Flickr (and first, Smug Mug) that gave me a platform to share as I've never had in the first 60 year of my nature photography. And, of course, so many of you and the stories you tell. Remember, the experience of taking a picture is often more memorable than the image like the time that mammoth came after me...

When I visited London in 2016, unfortunately, I did not step inside St Paul's. I only recently discovered one unique acoustic feature of St Paul's beautifully created dome that fascinated me. The Whispering Gallery is a circular walkway that is 257 steps up the dome from the cathedral floor, encircling the interior of the dome. At the Whispering Galley, a whisper against its curving walls is audible on the opposite side some 30 - 40 meters (on average, approximately 115 feet) away. How amazing! I am neither a physicist nor a mathematician. Based on what I have read, the late Lord Rayleigh discovered this phenomenon, that in a whispering gallery, the sound waves cling to the surface, creep horizontally along a relatively narrow belt around the circular shape of the wall, and travel to the other end of the gallery, thereby amplifying sound.

Scientific Name: Nymphicus hollandicus

Description: The Cockatiel is an unusual member of the cockatoo family. It is small in size, and has a slender body and long pointed tail, which is more characteristic of the smaller parrots. Its plumage is mostly grey, paler below, with a white wing patch, orange cheeks and a distinctive pointed crest. The male can be identified by its bright yellow forehead, face and crest. Young Cockatiels resemble the adult female, although the young males usually have a brighter yellow face. The Cockatiel is not found naturally in any other country, but is a popular cage bird, second only to the Budgerigar, Melopsittacus undulates. The Cockatiel does not have the screeching voice of many other parrots and may learn to 'speak'.

Distribution: The Cockatiel is widespread throughout mainland Australia, but is uncommon in Tasmania, with only a few sightings being reported to date.

Habitat: The Cockatiel is seen in pairs or small flocks, in most types of open country, usually near water. It is common throughout its range, especially in the north and the more arid inland areas.

Seasonal movements: Throughout its range, the Cockatiel is strongly nomadic, moving around in response to the availability of food and water.

Feeding: Cockatiels feed on a variety of grass seeds, nuts, berries and grain. They may feed either on the ground or in trees, and always in small to large numbers. Cockatiels roost in trees near water and travel from these areas in large flocks to feeding grounds.

Breeding: Cockatiels may breed at any time, in response to suitable periods of rain, especially in the more arid regions. Both sexes share the incubation of the eggs, which are laid in a hollow, high up in trees. Suitable trees are either in or close to water. Cockatiels enter the nest hollow tail first.

Calls: Although mostly silent, the Cockatiel gives a long and distinctive "queel-queel" in flight. It does not have the screeching voice of many other parrots and may learn to 'speak'.

Minimum Size: 30cm

Maximum Size: 33cm

Average size: 32cm

Average weight: 90g

Breeding season: Normally July to December in south of range

Clutch Size: 2 to 9, usually 5

Incubation: 19 days

Nestling Period: 30 days
