White-throated Honeyeater

Scientific Name: Melithreptus albogularis

The Yellow-throated Honeyeater can be quite aggressive towards other honeyeaters, as well as other species such as pardalotes, Golden Whistlers and Grey Shrike-thrushes, chasing them away in both breeding and non-breeding seasons.

Identification: The Yellow-throated Honeyeater is a medium to large slim-bodied honeyeater with a relatively long tail and a distinctive bright yellow chin and throat. It is a bright olive green above, with a silver-grey head, neck and underbody, and the yellow throat is bordered by a narrow black band. There is a small yellow ear-patch and the underbody is washed yellow, with the wing feathers also outlined with yellow. The bill is black and the eye is red-brown. Females are smaller than males. Young birds are very similar to adults, but duller overall. This Tasmanian species is usually seen singly or in pairs, often foraging on the trunks or foliage of large trees. It has also been called the Green Cherry-picker, Green Dick or Green Linnet.

Habitat: The Yellow-throated Honeyeater is found in a range of habitats, including wet and dry forests, woodlands, sub-alpine forests, temperate rainforest, wet scrubs and coastal heathlands. It is also often found in parks, gardens and reserves in urban areas. It is also found in orchards.

Distribution: The Yellow-throated Honeyeater is endemic to Tasmania, being widespread, and is found on some offshore islands. It is also found on King Island and on islands of the Furneaux Group.

Seasonality: Sedentary with some local movements. Females move into male territories during breeding season, then disperse along with young when breeding finished.

Feeding and diet: The Yellow-throated Honeyeater feeds mainly on insects and nectar, and occasionally on fruit and seeds. It feeds at all levels of the canopy, foraging on foliage, bark and flowers for insects and nectar. It will visit orchards to feed on insects and fruit, especially pears.

Communication: Loud 'tonk' calls, also 'pick-em-up' or 'get-a-whip'; aggressive churring and bill-snapping when chasing other birds.

Breeding behaviours: Male Yellow-throated Honeyeaters hold territories year-round, aggressively defending them against others of their own species as well as other birds and particularly, other honeyeaters. The female builds the small, cup-shaped nest close to the ground in dense shrubs such as tea-tree, Lomandra and wattles or in grass tussocks or new growth from a burnt stump. The nest is made from closely woven grass, bark and spider-web, and is lined with mammal fur or hair. Like a mainland Lichenostomusspecies, the White-eared Honeyeater, this species is known for its habit of collecting hair from live animals such as horses and dogs and even humans. The female incubates the eggs and feeds the young. She will leave the nestlings to be fed by the male if she is starting a second nest and brood, however the males will drive off the fledglings when they are old enough to disperse (usually for about three weeks, but often till the end of the season) and he will eventually drive the female away as well, once all the young have fledged. This species is parasitised by both Pallid Cuckoos and Fan-tailed Cuckoos.

Breeding Season: August to December.

Economic impacts: The Yellow-throated Honeyeater prefers older stands of dry sclerophyll forests and may be adversely affected by fire. It was formerly considered to be a pest of orchards, but there are no recent claims that it damages crops. It is well-known for its habit of landing on people's heads to collect hair for its nests.

This evocative image captures a unique perspective of Sydney's world-famous harbor. In the foreground, historic cannons stand sentinel on the ramparts of Fort Denison or a similar historic site. Three figures, possibly tourists, are perched casually among the artillery, gazing out at the breathtaking view before them. The scene is dominated by the unmistakable silhouette of the Sydney Opera House, its sail-like forms unmistakable even at a distance. Beyond, the graceful arch of the Sydney Harbour Bridge spans the water, connecting the city's north and south shores. The late afternoon light casts a soft glow over the harbor, creating a sense of timelessness as the past and present of this vibrant city converge in one frame. This image beautifully juxtaposes Sydney's colonial military history with its modern architectural marvels, all set against the backdrop of one of the world's most stunning natural harbors.

Eastern Great Egret

Scientific Name: Ardea modesta

Description: The Great Egret's overall plumage is white, and, for most of the year, when not breeding, the bill and facial skin are yellow. The feet are dark olive-grey or sooty black, as are the legs. During the breeding season, the bill turns mostly black and the facial skin becomes green. Also at this time, long hair-like feathers (nuptial plumes) hang across the lower back, and the legs become pinkish-yellow at the top. Young Great Egrets are similar to the adults, but have a blackish tip to the bill.

Similar species: The Great Egret can be confused with other white egrets found in Australia. It can be distinguished by the length of its neck, which is greater than the length of its body (and with a noticeable kink two-thirds of the way up), a dark line extending from the base of the bill to behind the eye and the overall larger size.

Distribution: Great Egrets occur throughout most of the world. They are common throughout Australia, with the exception of the most arid areas.

Habitat: Great Egrets prefer shallow water, particularly when flowing, but may be seen on any watered area, including damp grasslands. Great Egrets can be seen alone or in small flocks, often with other egret species, and roost at night in groups.

Feeding: The Great Egret usually feeds alone. It feeds on molluscs, amphibians, aquatic insects, small reptiles, crustaceans and occasionally other small animals, but fish make up the bulk of its diet. The Great Egret usually hunts in water, wading through the shallows, or standing motionless before stabbing at prey. Birds have also been seen taking prey while in flight.

Breeding: The Great Egret breeds in colonies, and often in association with cormorants, ibises and other egrets. Both sexes construct the nest, which is a large platform of sticks, placed in a tree over the water. The previous years' nest may often be re-used. Both sexes also incubate the eggs and care for the young (usually two or three).

Minimum Size: 70cm

Maximum Size: 90cm

Average size: 80cm

Breeding season: October to December in the south; March to May in the north.

Clutch Size: 2 to 6

Incubation: 28 days

Nestling Period: 40 days

We drove 10+ hours north-east to Weiser, Idaho to see the totality of the solar eclipse. What an experience!

We scouted around for a good place and decided to camp at the river bed of the Snake River a few miles downstream from Weiser. We could see the moon slip in front of the sun at 10:10am. The surrounding terrain became an eerie place ten minutes before the totality. The temperature dropped. Then at 11:25am it got dark within seconds, quite dark. The totality had begun. Now it was safe to look into the sun without a protective film, and to take off the sun filter from the camera lens. I was super exited, and at the same time very much focused on taking many shots with the new 600 mm long lens.

The sun is 400 times further away than the moon, and by pure luck the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun. Which, at totality means that the two object appear to have the same size. Actually, the moon is 2.7% larger, which allowed us to enjoy the totality for 2 minutes. It also means that the corona around the sun was clearly visible.

This is a slightly underexposed image, which better shows the structures in the corona. On the right and upper right you can also see what appears to be solar flares. Can any astronomer friend shed light on this?

The totality is a mystical experience, hard to describe. All I can say is that I recommend to put this on your bucket list if you have not experienced one in person. Totally worth a trip.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure to enhance the micro-contrast, and slightly adjusted the curves.
