The photograph captures a field of Daylilies in varying stages of their life cycle, a natural mosaic of vitality and decline. The flowers, radiant in shades of amber and gold, stand proudly among the blades of vibrant green, embodying the full swing of the summer bloom. While some petals retain their youthful sheen, others bear the marks of time, wilting gracefully, contributing to the cycle that feeds the soil. The pattern of life and rejuvenation is palpable in this image, with fresh buds ready to unfurl and spent blossoms ready to return to the earth. This scene is a reminder of the transient yet continuous nature of life, where every ending is intertwined with a new beginning, each flower a note in the symphony of the garden.

Alone on an island off the town of Lockeport, Nova Scotia stands the Carter Island Lighthouse which was first established here in 1872. In 1930, the lighthouse was replaced and in 1989 the light was changed to a fiberglass lantern.

The circular tower of the lighthouse reaches 30 feet high with a building beside it which was once the residence of the lightkeeper. The weather on Carter Island can be extremely cold and windy during storms and throughout the winter months.

Budgerigar

Scientific Name: Melopsittacus undulatus

Description: Since its introduction into captivity, the Budgerigar (or 'budgie') has been bred into a variety of colour forms, including pure white, blue, yellow, mauve, olive and grey. In the wild, Budgerigars are small green and yellow parrots, with black barring above, and a small patch of blue on the cheek. The male has a dark blue cere (skin at the base of the upper mandible surrounding the nostrils). In the female this is brownish when breeding and light blue otherwise. Young Budgerigars are similar to the adult birds, but are duller and have a dark brown eye (which is white or yellow in adults).

Distribution: The Budgerigar occurs naturally throughout much of mainland Australia, but is absent from the far south-west, the north of the Northern Territory, Tasmania and the majority of the east coast.

Habitat: Budgerigars are nomadic and large flocks of birds can be seen in most open habitat types, but seldom far from water. Very large flocks, numbering occasionally in the tens of thousands, are seen after a season of abundant rainfall and food. Flocks are usually much smaller, however, and range from as few as three birds up to 100 or more. Birds in a flock fly in a characteristic undulating manner.

Seasonal movements: Nomadic.

Feeding: Budgerigars feed almost exclusively on the seeds of native herbs and grasses, such as porcupine grass and saltbush. Seeds are mostly eaten from the ground and the bulk of drinking and feeding activity is in the morning.

Breeding: Budgerigars tend to breed in response to rainfall, and may produce several broods if conditions permit. The nest is a bare cavity in a suitable tree branch or in the trunk. The female sits on the round white eggs. As with other parrots, young budgerigars are born naked and helpless.

Calls: The contact call is a warbling "chirrup"; "zit" is given in alarm.

Minimum Size: 17cm

Maximum Size: 18cm

Breeding season: Any time of year when conditions suitable

Clutch Size: 6 to 8 eggs

Nestling Period: 35 days

Eastern Spinebill

Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris

The Eastern Spinebill sometimes hovers like a hummingbird when feeding on the nectar from flowers. Most Australian honeyeaters feed on flowers from a perched position.

Description: The Eastern Spinebill is most easily recognised by its very long, fine, down-curved beak and energetic flight, during which its white outer tail feathers are prominent. Males have a grey-black crown which extends in a black line on either site of the breast. The breast and throat are white, with a rufous patch in the centre of the throat. The wings and lower back are dark grey and the underparts and upper back are buff. Females are similar to males but have less distinct markings.

Similar species: Crescent Honeyeater, Tawny-crowned Honeyeater, Western Spinebill (in Western Australia)

Distribution: The Eastern Spinebill's range is generally east of the Great Dividing Range from Cooktown in Queensland to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia

Habitat: The Eastern Spinebill prefers heath, forest and woodland.

Seasonal movements: Largely sedentary, but undergoes some local movements, especially away from higher elevations in autumn/winter.

Feeding: The Eastern Spinebill feeds on insects and nectar while perched or while hovering. Nectar is obtained from a wide array of flowers, including grevilleas, but its beak is particularly well-suited to extracting nectar from tubular flowers such as epacrids.

Breeding: The Eastern Spinebill's nest is a small cup of twigs, grass and bark, combined with hair and spider's web, built in a tree fork, generally between 1 and 5 metres from the ground. Only the female builds the nest and incubates the eggs, but both parents feed the young when they hatch.

Calls: Short, repeated, high-pitched piping.

Minimum Size: 15cm

Maximum Size: 16cm

Average size: 16cm

Average weight: 11g

Breeding season: August to January

When I visited London in 2016, unfortunately, I did not step inside St Paul's. I only recently discovered one unique acoustic feature of St Paul's beautifully created dome that fascinated me. The Whispering Gallery is a circular walkway that is 257 steps up the dome from the cathedral floor, encircling the interior of the dome. At the Whispering Galley, a whisper against its curving walls is audible on the opposite side some 30 - 40 meters (on average, approximately 115 feet) away. How amazing! I am neither a physicist nor a mathematician. Based on what I have read, the late Lord Rayleigh discovered this phenomenon, that in a whispering gallery, the sound waves cling to the surface, creep horizontally along a relatively narrow belt around the circular shape of the wall, and travel to the other end of the gallery, thereby amplifying sound.

Yellow-billed Spoonbill

Scientific Name: Platalea flavipes

Description: The Yellow-billed Spoonbill is a large, white waterbird with a yellow face and spatulate (spoon-shaped) bill, and yellow legs and feet. During breeding season, the facial skin is outlined in black, the lacy outer wing plumes are tipped black and there are long hackles on its upper breast. Out of breeding, the face is yellow with no black outline and the lacy plumes and hackles are reduced or absent. Young birds are similar to adults, but have black markings on the inner flight feathers (tertials). It is most often seen wading slowly in shallow waters, sweeping its bill from side to side to feed.

Similar species: Their large spoon-shaped bills easily distinguish spoonbills from all other water birds. The yellow bill and legs distinguish the Yellow-billed Spoonbill from the slightly smaller Royal Spoonbill, P. regia, which has a black bill and legs, and a distinctive crest (more apparent during breeding season).

Distribution: The Yellow-billed Spoonbill is found across Australia in suitable habitat, particularly in the north and well-watered inland areas, but is less common in coastal regions. It is a vagrant to Lord Howe Island and New Zealand.

Habitat: The Yellow-billed Spoonbill is found in the shallows of freshwater wetlands, dams, lagoons and swamps, and sometimes in dry pastures, but rarely uses saltwater wetlands. It can use much smaller areas of water than the Royal Spoonbill.

Seasonal movements: Nomadic.

Feeding: The Yellow-billed Spoonbill feeds on aquatic insects and their larvae, using its bill to sweep shallow waters for prey. The spatulate bill has many vibration detectors, called papillae, on the inside of the spoon, which means the bird can feel for prey items even in murky water and can feed by day or night. Once food is caught, it lifts its bill up and lets the items slide down its throat. The Yellow-billed Spoonbill has less sensory papillae and a smaller spoon than the Royal Spoonbill, which means that it catches slower moving prey.

Breeding: The Yellow-billed Spoonbill often nests in colonies with other water birds, such as ibises and Royal Spoonbills. It places its nest in high forks of trees over water, or in among reed beds, building a shallow, unlined platform of sticks, rushes and reeds. The male collects the nest materials while the female builds and both sexes share incubation and care of the young.

Calls: Almost mute; some feeble grunting and also bill-clapping.

Minimum Size: 76cm

Maximum Size: 91cm

Average size: 84cm

Breeding season: July to November in the south; March to May in the north.

Clutch Size: Two to four.
