Straw-necked Ibis

Scientific Name: Threskiornis spinicollis

Description: The Straw-necked Ibis is a large waterbird with a naked black head, long downcurved black bill and yellow throat plumes. It has a glossy blue-black back, with metallic purple, green and bronze sheen, a white nape and sides of neck and white underparts. Its preference for grassland insects such as grasshoppers and locusts have earnt it the name of Farmer's Friend.

Similar species: The strawlike neck feathers distinguish the Straw-necked Ibis from other ibises. When flying, it has a white body and black wings, while the Australian White Ibishas a black head with white body and wings.

Distribution: The Straw-necked Ibis is found across mainland Australia. It is vagrant to Tasmania and is also found in Indonesia, New Guinea, Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island.

Habitat: The Straw-necked Ibis prefers wet and dry grasslands, pastures, croplands and swamp or lagoon margins. It is rarely found on coastal shores, mudflats or mangroves and is generally less adaptable than the Australian White Ibis.

Seasonal movements: Highly nomadic, moving in search of suitable habitat.

Feeding: The Straw-necked Ibis feeds mainly on terrestrial invertebrates, especially grasshoppers and locusts. It will also take frogs, small reptiles and mammals. It forages by probing or takes prey from the surface of water bodies. It is rarely an opportunistic scavenger, unlike the Australian White Ibis. The Straw-necked Ibis has been called the Farmer's Friend, because it eats crop pests such as grasshoppers and locusts.

Breeding: The Straw-necked Ibis forms large breeding colonies, often with Australian White Ibises. The low nests are large trampled platforms of reeds, rushes and sticks over water, often blending together to form one continuous platform, and are re-used over many years. Both sexes build nests, incubate eggs and feed the young.

Calls: Silent away from nest; grunts or croaks at nest and hoarse rolling calls in flight: 'u-u-uh'.

Minimum Size: 59cm

Maximum Size: 76cm

Average size: 68cm

Breeding season: August to January in south; February to May in north

Clutch Size: Two to five, usually two to three.

Incubation: 25 days

Nestling Period: 35 days

The Spirit heading east. The "Spirit of the Outback" heading east from Barcaldine to Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia.

I travelled on the train (then called the Midlander) as a kid and record it in different locations whenever I visit my home town - Barcaldine, Queensland. The reason is, I wonder how long the service will be supported by the Queensland Government, especially as the current rollingstock is at the end of its life - 30 years.

Now called the Spirit of the Outback, it has been a favourite with Australian and international travellers alike for 10 years, due to the social atmosphere onboard and the spectacular views afforded throughout the 24 hour journey.

The 1,300 km journey between Brisbane and Longreach offers a unique insight into the history and culture of early Australia.

The 'Spirit of the Outback' ventures through the heritage towns of Blackwater, Emerald and Barcaldine (home of the Worker's Heritage Centre) before arriving in Longreach, home to the famous Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame, Qantas Founders Museum and the Outback Heritage Centre.

New Holland Honeyeater

Phylidonyris novaehollandiae

With long, slender beaks and a tongue which can protrude well beyond the end of their beaks, New Holland Honeyeaters are able to probe for nectar in the deep flowers of Banksias and Grevilleas.

Calls: The voice comprises a loud 'chik', a fainter 'pseet' and some chattering notes. If danger, such as a bird of prey approaches, a group of honeyeaters will join together and give a loud alarm call.

Minimum Size: 18cm

Maximum Size: 18cm

Average size: 18cm

Average weight: 20g

Breeding season: any time of year; mainly summer and winter

Clutch Size: 2 to 3

Incubation: 18 days

Nestling Period: 16 days

Description: The New Holland Honeyeater is mostly black and white, with a large yellow wing patch and yellow sides on the tail. It has a small white ear patch, a thin white whisker at the base of the bill and a white eye. This honeyeater is an active bird, and rarely sits still long enough to give an extended view. Sexes are similar in looks, but females are slightly smaller in size. Young birds are browner and have a grey eye.

Similar species: One very similar species is the White-cheeked Honeyeater,Phylidonyris nigra. This species has a single large white cheek patch and a dark eye. The two species frequently occur together.

Distribution: The New Holland Honeyeater's range extends throughout southern Australia, from about Brisbane, Queensland, to just north of Perth, Western Australia.

Habitat: The New Holland Honeyeater is common in heath, forests, woodland and gardens, mainly where grevilleas and banksias are found. It is inquisitive and approaches humans. It also mixes with other types of honeyeaters.

Feeding: New Holland Honeyeaters are active feeders. They mostly eat the nectar of flowers, and busily dart from flower to flower in search of this high-energy food. Other food items include fruit, insects and spiders. Birds may feed alone, but normally gather in quite large groups. Most feeding takes place in lower areas of bushes and thickets.

Breeding: The New Holland Honeyeater's cup-shaped nest is made of bark and grasses, bound together with spider web. It is lined with soft material and is placed in a bush or tree, anywhere from ground level up to 6 m. Both sexes feed the chicks. A pair of adults may raise two or three broods in a year.

Variegated Fairy-wren

Malurus lamberti

Maluridae

Widespread in the arid and semi-arid zones of mainland Australia, the Variegated Fairy-wren is also recorded in tropical, sub-tropical and temperate regions, where it inhabits a wide variety of dense thickets. The species is mainly terrestrial, foraging on the ground or in the understorey. Often their presence in the shrubs is betrayed by their soft, chirping contact calls, though the species calls less often than other fairy-wrens. In contrast, their song is surprisingly loud, and is often given from a prominent perch.

Description: The breeding male Variegated Fairy-wren is brightly coloured. The crown and sides of the head are blue, and the shoulder patch is a rich chestnut. The depth and variety of colours in the male varies among the four subspecies, distributed across the Australian mainland. Non-breeding males, females and young birds are brownish grey. Females in the Northern Territory and Western Australian populations have a blue-grey (rather than brown-grey) plumage.

Similar Species: Several other species of fairy-wren are found in Australia. The males of each species are quite distinct, but the females and young birds are often difficult to separate. The female Variegated Fairy-wren has a dull grey-blue wash, while female and immature Superb Fairy-wrens, Malurus cyaneus, are mostly brown, with adult females having a pale greenish gloss on the otherwise brown tail. The Variegated Fairy-wren is slightly larger in size and has a longer tail either the Superb or the White-winged Fairy-wrens.

Distribution: The Variegated Fairy-wren is the most widespread of the nine species of fairy-wrens found in Australia. It is found throughout Australia, being absent only from Cape York Peninsula, Tasmania and the extreme south-west corner of Western Australia.

Habitat: The Variegated Fairy-wren is found in forest, woodland and shrub land habitats

Feeding: The Variegated Fairy-wren feeds on insects and a small amount of seeds. The birds feed around the base of small shrubs, and seldom stray into the open. Some food may be found among the bark and foliage of short trees and grasses.

Breeding: The male Variegated Fairy-wren is often mistakenly believed to have a harem of females. The small groups actually consist of an adult female with younger or non-breeding birds. As they have a wide range, Variegated Fairy-wrens have been recorded breeding in almost every month of the year. The nest is an oval-shaped dome, constructed of grasses, and placed in a low shrub. The female alone constructs the nest and incubates the eggs, but is assisted by other group members in feeding the chicks.

Sacred Kingfisher

Scientific Name: Todiramphus sanctus

Description: The Sacred Kingfisher is a medium sized kingfisher. It has a turquoise back, turquoise blue rump and tail, buff-white underparts and a broad cream collar. There is a broad black eye stripe extending from bill to nape of neck. Both sexes are similar, although the female is generally lighter with duller upper parts. Young birds are similar to the female, but have varying amounts of rusty-brown edging to feathers on the collar and underparts, and buff edges on the wing coverts.

Distribution: The Sacred Kingfisher is common and familiar throughout the coastal regions of mainland Australia and less common throughout Tasmania. The species is also found on islands from Australasia to Indonesia and New Zealand.

Habitat: The Sacred Kingfisher inhabits woodlands, mangroves and paperbark forests, tall open eucalypt forest and melaleuca forest.

Seasonal movements: In Australia, Sacred Kingfishers spend the winter in the north of their range and return south in the spring to breed.

Feeding: Sacred Kingfishers forage mainly on the land, only occasionally capturing prey in the water. They feed on crustaceans, reptiles, insects and their larvae and, infrequently, fish. The birds perch on low exposed branch on the lookout for prey. Once prey is located, the Sacred Kingfisher swoops down and grasps it in its bill, returning to the perch to eat it.

Breeding: For most of the year Sacred Kingfishers are mainly solitary, pairing only for the breeding season. Usually two clutches are laid in a season. Both sexes excavate the nest, which is normally a burrow in a termite mound, hollow branch or river bank. The nest chamber is unlined and can be up to 20m above the ground. Both sexes also incubate the eggs and care for the young.

Calls: The voice of the Sacred Kingfisher is a loud "ek ek ek ek" repeated continuously throughout breeding season. Birds also give a "kee kee kee" in excitement and a series of chirring, scolding notes when alarmed.

Minimum Size: 19cm

Maximum Size: 24cm

Average size: 21cm

Average weight: 45g

Breeding season: September to December; occasionally extended to March, if conditions are favourable.

Clutch Size: 3 to 6

Incubation: 18 days

Nestling Period: 26 days
