Comfortably view from my house to 1000 mm. :)

This is from a series of shots taken in the Scottish Highlands.

This guy was soaked and was giving himself a good shake which I managed to capture.

To approach the hares you need to gain their trust. You get close and if they remain calm then you can slowly move towards them. This means on your belly, with the camera and tripod.

By doing this they get used to you being there and you can remain for some time near them being comfortable with your presence. It was an experience I'm grateful to have had.

I spent the day photographing these creatures in their natural habitat. It was a freezing cold day with gale force winds and constant rain and sleet. It hit home how harsh the conditions can be for these guys.

Mountain hares have evolved to change colour from dappled shades of brown to white, keeping them camouflaged against the winter snow. They are at their most vulnerable when they are still young leverets and preyed upon by foxes, stoats, birds of prey and cats.

Thanks for looking.

There's that cat again ... follow the notes for more

(ps - must take more shots of my other cat before she get jealous)

I share my photos in groups so more people can see them, but I do not appreciate copied & pasted, pre-made comments with ad images for said groups. It comes off as spammy advertisement, to me. If you found my image and you like it, please make your own original comment. Otherwise, it will be removed. I don't mean to seem ungrateful, but I also don't think it's a compliment to spam someone with group ad images.

We went on our traditional Mother's Day hike again, and this year we chose the Provinceland Dunes on the Eastern side of Provincetown. With the wind from the West, it was a very comfortable hike - cool weather, but very sunny and no wind since were were protected by the high hills of sand.

While koalas are popular worldwide and are the face of many Aussie tourist souvenirs, there are some really basic facts that people might not know about this iconic and lovable mammal – like right now they are incredibly vulnerable to local extinction in NSW.

Here are 10 interesting facts about koalas put together by WWF Australia:

1. Koalas aren’t bears – they’re marsupials!

You might hear the term ‘koala bear’ being tossed around when it comes to these fluffy animals. While they might look bear-like with their round ears and big black nose, they actually share more characteristics with other marsupials like the wombat.

2. Baby koalas are too cute (this is indeed, a fact).

Called ‘joeys’, baby koalas develop in their mother’s pouch for about six months. After this time, they’ll ride on their mum’s back for another six months, only using the pouch to feed and sleep.

3. Koalas can be found in south-eastern and eastern Australia

While koalas are a national symbol of Australia’s unique wildlife, they can only be found in the wild on the southeast and eastern sides of Australia, along the coastlines of Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria. They live high up in eucalyptus trees of native bushlands and forests, usually perched between the forks of the tree’s branches.

4. They have a very supportive butt…

Living in trees and being wedged between rough branches requires a lot of support! Luckily, the koala has strong cartilage at the end of their curved spine, allowing them to make eucalyptus trees a comfortable home!

5. They’re fussy eaters!

Koalas survive on a diet of eucalyptus leaves and can eat up to a kilogram a day! Pretty impressive, considering eucalyptus is poisonous to most animals. Their special fibre digesting organ, called a caecum, helps to detoxify the chemicals in the leaves.

However, they can be quite picky eaters, eating less than 50 of over 700 eucalypt species. Even then, they’ll often choose leaves at the top of the tallest trees that contain more liquid and nutrients – only the best for Australia’s koalas!

6. ‘Koala’ is thought to mean ‘no drink’ in the Australian Aboriginal language

It was thought that koalas didn’t need to drink because of the moisture they get from munching on juicy eucalyptus leaves all day. However, they do drink from various water sources when needed, especially during heatwaves and in times of drought.

7. Koalas can sleep up to 18 hours a day

Despite the rumours, koalas don’t ‘get high’ or ‘drugged out’ on eucalyptus leaves. It’s because the leaves are so low in nutrients that koalas need more sleep than most animals which basically helps them conserve energy.

8. Koala Chlamydia is a serious disease

But it’s not the same strain of Chlamydia that affects humans. Many koala populations are vulnerable to Chlamydia and it usually manifests when they’re in stressful situations. The disease can cause blindness and reproductive tract infections.

9. Koalas are losing their homes to excessive tree-clearing

Many koala populations are faced with nowhere to go when their forest habitat is destroyed by deforestation. Just in the last two years, tree-clearing has tripled in New South Wales, leaving important koala habitats incredibly fragmented or completely lost. With their trees gone, koalas are spending more time on the ground in search of food and shelter. Sadly, this is when they’re most vulnerable to being hit by vehicles, attacked by dogs and falling ill to stress-induced diseases like chlamydia.

10. Sadly, koala numbers are on the decline

Sadly, koala numbers are on the decline. Their numbers have been falling further and further every year due to deforestation and disease. Then, Australia was ravaged by the most devastating, unprecedented bushfire season the country has ever seen. Tragically, nearly 3 billion animals, many found nowhere else in the world, perished. Many struggling Australian species, like our koalas, have now been pushed even further towards the brink of extinction. The good news is that there is hope to turn this around.

Princes Pier is a 580 metre long historic pier on Port Phillip, in Princes Pier, adjacent to Station Pier in Port Phillip Bay, is one of Melbourne’s most important cultural assets both as an exemplar of a pre-containerised shipping facility and as a place rich in Australia’s wartime, maritime and multicultural history. Words by Steve Brown, design director, NDYLIGHT.

Built between 1912 and 1915, it was constructed by the Melbourne Harbour Trust as a second railway pier in Port Melbourne, The pier was designed to handle both cargo and passengers, and also boasted office accommodation for customs officers and shipping companies as well as waiting room for passengers with moveable gangways making it safer and more comfortable to board or disembark.

Originally known as 'New Railway Pier', it was renamed Princes Pier in 1921 in honour of the royal visit by the Prince of Wales. The pier’s iconic two-level timber Gatehouse was added in 1935 to enable better monitoring of cargo and traffic on to and off of the pier.

Princes Pier is a heritage listed structure, and was the departure point for Australian troops during the First and Second World Wars, and also the arrival point for American troops during the Second World War. In a significant peacetime role, it was the first landing point in Australia for post-war migrants — more than one million between 1947 and 1969.

After the containerization boom and the last of the migrant ships in 1969 the pier became run-down and was decommissioned in 1985. It suffered severe deterioration over the next two decades, until in 2006 the Victorian Government decided Princes Pier would not be left to rot and committed $34 million to its restoration.

Gezellig. The word gezellig encompasses Dutch culture. It goes beyond its literal translation of ‘cosy, quaint or comfortable’, and can also be used to describe having coffee with a friend, reading a good book or spending time with family. Though Amsterdam is not a particularly snowy city, it does tend to snow for a few weeks in the winter. During this time, you might fall off of your bike and public transport might stop running but hey, Amsterdam sure does look gezellig. So bundle up, go outside and play in the snow! Need a place to play? Visit the canals at the Jordaan, it's looks gorgeous in the snow. Walk around the Jordaan district in the evening and you’ll probably to notice something missing: curtains! The Dutch are masters of cosy interior design and have no problem showing off their work of art. Want to make your home gezellig? Buy loads of candles, plants, funky light fixtures and adopt a few pets. For nice interior design boutiques, check out the Negen straatjes - Nine Streets district. It is the first time in four years time that the Netherlands received so much snowfall. According to the National weather center KNMI. In some parts of the north of Holland lies between 7 to 9 inches of snow. The last time this occurred was in 2005. Normally the Netherlands get no more than between 3 and 5 inches of snow. It does occasionally snow in Amsterdam in December, but that almost always means just a light dusting. If you think the city is attractive in dry weather, just wait until you wake up one morning to see it covered in a thin coat of fresh snow. With the canals in the city and occasional high winds, there can be a nip in the air, but packing gloves and a scarf should keep you warm enough.

This weekend we walk around the canals and made some photos of the snow in of our neighborhood. We went shopping downtown for Christmas. When it snows it’s light dusting and really beautiful. The steep bridges over the canals in Amsterdam are really slippery. ...especially for cars. The best way to travel in the snow is by bicycle, tram, walking or better by sleds. Last night extreme temperature of -9 degrees Celsius. This is rare since the winter has not yet started. The heavy snowfall is too bad for ice skating. Photo taken here at Bloemgracht in Amsterdam. More snow expected these coming days. It's a handheld streetshot at 1/6s, ISO400 and F2.0 .

Just sitting and waiting for a good time to mingle again. There's no problem at all; I'm very comfortable, though quite disappointed how anti-social I've had to become.
