A lovely combination of a sunny late afternoon and a high tide had me scooting down to the Old Town, camera in hand.

Wasn't expecting the first hoverfly of 2016 quite yet, and certainly not this species. I've never seen one before May before, so finding this in the kitchen today was really unexpected. Presumably it had been developing in the amaryllis bulb on the kitchen window-sill (it was outside in the summer), and a combination of central-heating and an unusual sunny windowsill had coaxed it out early. I feel guilty now....

So, I've decided that I want to become a strobist. I'm really excited about the whole prospect, and can't wait to start getting all the equipment for it. I love the effect that it gives a picture, and I'm totally sick of the horrible lighting I always deal with. Expect great things if I can ever find a manual flash that I'm satisfied with. I'd love a Lumopro LP120, but it seems that they're sold out EVERYWHERE I've looked online.

If you have a suggestion for where I can find one, or another manual flash that would be good for a beginner and not more than $150, please let me know. I've heard mixed reviews about the Vivitar 285... any thoughts?

I'd really appreciate any tips anyone can offer.

A combination of two shots taken during the last new moon (11 dec 2015) under the electric wind turbines of Peuchapatte with the incredible Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 HSM Art. (Processed with canon DPP and Photoshop)

The nightscapes are other exemple of the crazy possible uses of this lens : f/1.8 is really useful here. With my Canon 18-135 f/3.5/5.6, I had really poor results with this camera.

I have to say that being by night under these colossal wind turbines (108m high from the ground to the rotor axis) is very impressive. They make a lot of noise and their presence is very intimidating ... The feeling is much less strange during daylight.

It was also very cold : because of the wind, I had to hold the tripod, so my hands were freezing. I felt it all the day after. But it was a worthy discomfort and I don't regret the experience !

------------------------------------------------------

There is a lot of discussion about wind turbines in Switzerland. The government wants to stop using nuclear energy, which suppose to create more turbines (among other sources of sustainable energy). Even if the population is generally ok with the idea, it's hard for people to accept them. There only a few place where there is enough wind. The jura mountains are one of them. And people seem to use the "ok, but not in my backyard" logic towards wind turbines.

Personally, I support them, and I don't think that they ruin the beauty of landscape (which is a major argument of their opponents). Furthermore, they can even be picturesque : we just have to wait a little bit to get used to the idea. (The old dutch windmills have probably not seemed picturesque when they were built) However, since I went there by night, I have to admit that they are really noisy (which is another argument). So I am sorry for people living there, but I still think that worthy building wind turbines...
