COMBINATION OF FLORA & FAUNA

The combination of rain, sleet and strong winds are not perfect for long exposures, but I had to try. Hanging on the tripod while wiping the filters may have caused some motion artifacts, but I think it come out quite ok. Lee big stopper.

"The whole world, as we experience it visually, comes to us through the mystic realm of color."

Hans Hofmann

Complementary colors are pairs of colors that are directly opposite each other on the color wheel, such as red and green, blue and orange, or yellow and purple.

Combination of low tide and fog in the evening made for an interesting view there in Bar Harbor, Maine.

In November last year, I had the great privilege of being taken to a private working flower farm, hidden in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges National Park in Silvan on the outskirts of Melbourne. The growers specialise in crocuses, Japanese water irises, orchids, rare species of plants from South America and California, and beautiful heirloom peony roses. As a departure gift after a lovely afternoon wandering the greenhouses and fields, the owners gave me a bunch of beautiful pink Sarah Bernhardt peonies which have wonderfully furled petals.

As the weather was beautifully fine in the days following my visit, I took the peonies in their vase out onto the garden to photograph them against the beautiful blue sky dusted with white, fluffy clouds, and against the rich green of my lawn. Imagine my delight, when a Heteronympha Merope (Common Brown) butterfly landed on one of the blooms just as I was photographing them! Now, I will happily confess that I admire any photographer who is quick enough to capture a butterfly in a shot, as I am usually far too slow to do so myself. However this butterfly was remarkably obliging and stayed on the bloom, basking in the sunshine, just long enough for me to take three photographs before it flitted away again!

The theme for the 3rd of August for “Smile on Saturday” is “combination of flora and fauna”. I was originally going to use another shot of a bee amongst some spring blossoms, but as I used a similar shot for “Looking Close on Friday’s theme of “bugs & co” on the 5th of July, when I remembered these photos from my archive, I decided to make a photo collage and submit them instead. I hope you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!

Heteronympha Merope, or the Common Brown, is a species of butterfly of the family Nymphalidae, endemic to the southern half of Australia. The wingspan is about sixty millimetres for males and seventy millimetres for females.

Paeonia lactiflora 'Sarah Bernhardt' is an exquisite herbaceous peony with ruffled, flamingo-pink double blooms that open from large and rounded buds. 'Sarah Bernhardt' is by far the best-known and most loved peony in the world. In fact, it’s so popular that it has become the face of peonies in general. This heirloom plant from 1906 is also delightfully fragrant.

I see it in everything, that it is often the combination that ‘makes’ something…

Whether it be food, clothes, colours euhh, or people… LOL

A pleasing combination of False Solomon's Seal (Smilacina racemosa) and ferns accent the base of this pair of lichen covered trees. The woods are filled with these attractive wildflowers whose flowers convert to berries which carry a variety of colors as they mature to red in the fall.

Many thanks for all the kind comments and faves - they're very much appreciated. Have a good week everyone!

The combination of golden light and wooden fencing helped to create a western look to this image. Add to that a white streak in the sky in the form of a cloud, and balance was achieved. I wanted to find the correct angle that would line up the fence with the ridge. That had me fumbling about while standing on an uneven drop off.

Alone on this ridge, there was plenty of time to work uninterrupted. Only the golden light served as my hour glass. Like the sands that would flow through the apex, light too would continue to change, until absent.

I think, in food, fashion, art and other things, the secret is in the combination!

Such a lovely combination of colours, shape and textures.

Thanks and have a happy day, Magda, (*_*)

His name is Gato. He belongs to my neighbour who lives behind me. He is a very sweet little guy and hails from Guatemala.

Not a sight you usually sea on the beach front but I loved the combination of textures!

Recently visited Oldmoor Wood, Nottinghamshire. Oldmoor Wood is a woodland in Nottinghamshire, near the village of Strelley. It covers a total area of 15.11 hectares. It is owned and managed by The Woodland Trust.

I went primarily for the beautiful Bluebells. There is a mix of Native and Spanish Bluebells.

Native Bluebells are protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981.

How to tell the difference.

Spanish Bluebells: Flowers all around the stem.

Late the other afternoon, going to the mailbox to check the mail, couldn't help noticing how the sun was hitting the "garden area" around the mailbox just right,

Went for my camera again, to grab a few shots. There's a small window when the daffodils are still blooming and the pink thrift is just starting to bloom. Having tried several days earlier to catch the combination of the two, this evening seemed like my last chance as the daffs are now starting to fade off.

Again, if any neighbors saw me they probably thought, "She's at it again!" Had to kneel in the street next to the mailbox to get this shot/angle.

Large, stocky bunting. On breeding males, the combination of a black head, a bright yellow collar, yellow underparts, and rusty-brown back is unmistakable. The black on the face of nonbreeding males is restricted to the patch around the eyes forming a “bandit’s mask.” Female is plain brown overall with a pale yellowish wash on the vent and traces of yellow on the rump. Extremely similar to female Red-headed Bunting; best to use a combination of various details to separate the two, with the Red-headed Bunting having a yellower rump and belly, a more noticeably streaked crown, and a bulkier bill than Black-headed Bunting. Breeds in open forests, edges, and patchily planted areas like orchards and gardens. Winters in farmland. Song is a rather lacklustre series of buzzy notes. Calls are varied and include sparrowlike chirps and high thin “tseep’s.” (eBird)

--------------

We saw these a number of times during our travels. They became one of the birds whose song I recognized because we heard them so often.

Captured in: Cape Elizabeth, ME

Seen here is a late afternoon capture of one of the more picturesque lighthouses found along the East Coast of the United States -- the Portland Head Light. The shot itself was taken from the cliffs overlooking Portland Harbor on an early September day. The Portland Head Light was constructed back in 1791, and is said to be the oldest lighthouse in Maine.

This image happens to be a favorite shot of mine that I captured a little while back, but I felt it was in need a few processing tweaks. I decided to change it up a bit by adding some motion blur to the ocean, increasing the brightness & white balance a bit, cropping the image a little tighter, and adding a subtle matte finish as well.

"Portland Head Light 2.0" is an HDR image constructed from 3 separate shots, with a differential of 2 stops between images.

The resulting HDR image was processed using a combination of ACR, Photomatix, and Photoshop (includes the use of Topaz Labs plugins -- Adjust, Clean, Denoise, and Glow).

1950 Packard Convertible

By 1950 a combination of some bad management decisions, and probably some cash flow issues attributed to it, had put the once great Packard on death's door with only six years of life left. James Nance, the then CEO of Packard, decided to move out of their 2 story manufacturing plant and into a smaller, one story plant which not only created the normal move headaches associated with doing that, but the now somewhat jammed quarters led to quality issues in their manufacturing. And instead of addressing those issues where they occurred, they simply transferred "the fix" of those issues onto the dealer network. None of that bode well with the dealers, and many of the loyal dealers of many years decided to drop the franchise. And, surely, that would have an impact on sales.

Also, Packard was late to market with a fresh, after war look that their chief competitors, Lincoln and Cadillac had already done a few years earlier. And after the war, the buying public was ready and eager for change after no cars throughout the war years, and with little change from the models of 5 years prior. The 1950 shown above was really nothing more than a freshened up look of Packard's prewar models. Two years earlier Cadillac had already embraced the aviation look made popular back then by adding "P-38 tailfins" to their line. Lincoln did a complete redesign of their cars in 1949, and many had "gunsight" taillights, a new look for them, and probably created to emulate the machine gun gunsights found on WWII bombers. (although IMO, the prior year '48 Lincoln was a beautiful, classic, and much nicer design)

Although Packard had produced a beautifully smooth and powerful inline 8 cylinder motor for decades, and quite possibly one of the auto industry's best motors, it was not until 1955 that they met with the trend of providing V8 motors in their cars. Both Cadillac and Lincoln had already offered their V8 versions for decades prior. And Cadillac offered theirs as the newer, more advanced over head valve versions. Once more, Packard was late to market.

The final straw probably came when Packard, already somewhat financially strapped, purchased the even more financially strapped Studebaker Corporation. Nance's goal was to create a super power machine not unlike General Motors at the time. Negotiations were in place for Packard to buy the Nash/Hudson entity, and maybe because of ego issues of the leaders that acquisition never materialized. Nance figured Studebaker would then compete on the low end against Ford and Chevrolet, whereas Nash and Hudson would be his mid tier competitor against Buick and Oldsmobile, and Packard would remain at the top to continue to compete with the likes of Cadillac and Lincoln. Unfortunately for Packard, that never happened, and whether it would have made a difference in Packard's fate is arguably debatable. The end for Packard came in June of 1956, the final year of the last real Packard produced.

A combination of Barn Swallow and Cliff Swallow nests line the supports of the bridge crossing Armand Bayou just beyond my put-in point. In March and April each year, the air is full of stunt flyers putting on a show that never seems to end. The longer I watched these Cliff Swallows going to and from the various nests, the less I understood exactly what was going on with them.
