I noticed the warm glow coming from "downtown" Schenectady and thought that the lighting on the Nott complimented it nicely. The street lights created the cold blueish light that I thought was a nice contrast to the lights elsewhere in the photo.

It's easy., at this remove from eighty years later, to believe that the end of the second world war meant that the world enjoyed immediate and stable peace.
Nothing could be further from the truth: there were fears of the war continuing as a struggle between the democracies of the West and the Communist bloc, with nuclear weapons able to annihilate entire cities. Britain prepared by building its own nuclear deterrent, whilst to protect the civilian population it rebuilt the ARP function - now known as Civil Defence, or CD. It also needed people to join the Auxiliary Fire Service and as Police Specials - fully qualified, but on-call, firefighters and Police.
The Civil Defence Corps, the auxiliary Fire Service and the Police needed recruits - thousands of them. Local authorities up and down the country were responsible for full and part-time posts to observe incoming aircraft, or look after areas of each town to rescue survivors and help the Police keep order in a post-apocalypse Britain.
Bolton Corporation used a fairly imaginative way to raise awareness and gain recruits for its CD unit, Fire Service and Police. Withdrawn Leyland bus number 186 was taken into the paint shop where the Corporation Transport's craftsmen gave full head to their creative talents, with this amazing advertising livery. 186 was driven around Bolton to drum up recruits - we don't know how successful it was in Bolton, but we do know that it was always a struggle to get CD recruits as the pay was very low and as time went on, its relevance faded as the Cold War settled into a semi-stable, sullen sense of mutual destruction.
By then 186 had also lost its relevance - after a time promoting Civil Defence, 186 was sent to the scrapyard. You can still see preserved Bolton buses, not least number 77 of 1956 which is now in the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester.

A cold misty winter’s morning on the James River in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia…I used my Sap on Pine texture on this image...Best viewed large.
Yellowknife airport covers itself in ice fog on a chilly day. Alongside the five 737-200s, you can see a CRJ, which couldn't fly because they're limited to -40 degrees!
This is a lovely Painted Tiger Moth (Arachnis picta, family Arctiidae) clutching a slender stem of native California Honeysuckle (Lonicera hispidula, Caprifoliaceae). I found her this morning in light rain, on front of our concrete block retaining wall. I moved the stem above the wall to get a better background, and only then discovered that she was ovipositing! See my [Previous] two photos. I hope I didn't interfere too much. Did you notice that tiny red mite walking over her hind leg? (San Marcos Pass, 2 November 2015)
We did get some rain today, but only about 1/10 inch. Most of the rain was to the north and west of us, but it was still good for the soul. It was rather cold today - in the 40s for most of the day. I know, that's not cold, but I'm spoiled because we just finished our warmest October ever in Santa Barbara, see this NWS page. (Look quick - I don't know how long these links last.)
So winter is here in Texas. After a wonderful thanksgiving weekend in Ft Worth and Houston I am back here in Lubbock. I was quickly displayed with another strange piece of Southern decor.

Yes, these are little aluminum things that people hang from whatever vehicle they drive letting all know that this vehicle is their penis.
While heading home after a bit of time at the library i was lucky enough to have a red light to allow some time to snap a photo of these cold testicles.
They must be, why else would they have a warmer?

A destroyed bank building on Failaka island. I did many versions of this HDR panorama and here, the panorama was stitched again using a Wide View perspective and also merging HDR slides using Tungsten WB instead of the original WB (Daylight). In HDR phase and before baking the panorama, adjustment layers were added to separate the cold and warm tones between the ceiling and the whole scene. Tone-mapping (baking) added a bit of dramatic light into the scene.
