I took the Cog Railway up Pikes Peak and hiked down Barr Trail. All photos have some degree of HDR in them. Some more some less.
The Cog runs in between two rails. Seen in this picture is the cog and T-rail mechanism that allows better traction on such steep inclines.
The clip-art worked really well with this one. That girl is definitely on an exploring mission (note the magnifying glass around her neck).
Why do I covet such things? Pieces of the past, parts of something mysterious I guess, don't know exactly what pieces these are... I just think they're cool, and they look so good as a group!
Looking out the front window of the cog railway you can see the toothed rail in the center of the railroad. There is no way a traditional train could negotiate the steep slopes of the Alps, especially with the rails wet with snow, but the gear under the train engine fit nicely into the toothed rail to provide traction..
The Cog Railway is a railway which goes up to the Mount Washing Summit in NH. The "cog" of the train can climb up a track with a 30 degree positive slope. Mt. Washington is the highest mountain peak of the Northeast. The summit comes in at 6288 feet. This is a must view attraction in NH. It's a trip to the moon, oh that's was said already. Must visit! Worth the trip! What a memory!
Yes it was a rainey day, still a great place to visit.
