The Cog Railway is a railway which goes up to the Mount Washing Summit in NH. The "cog" of the train can climb up a track with a 30 degree positive slope. Mt. Washington is the highest mountain peak of the Northeast. The summit comes in at 6288 feet. This is a must view attraction in NH. It's a trip to the moon, oh that's was said already. Must visit! Worth the trip! What a memory!

Old mining Equipment @ the Blackburn mine near Mt sommers

This cog railway is a fairly recent addition to the Quincy Mine site, having been built in the 1990s along an old Quincy & Torch Lake right-of-way to take tourists down to the adit entrance of the mine's 7th level. The tourists also get a good view looking down into the valley of the Keweenaw Waterway, where the twin towns of Houghton and Hancock sit.

I keep mentioning this hill, but I kind of jumbled the order of things while posting and haven't shown it yet. If you look at a map of the Keweenaw Peninsula, you'll notice the whole thing is cut in half by a waterway. So technically, I guess, the upper half of the peninsula is an island. Parts of this waterway are artificial, former marshland dug out by dredges to provide a route across the peninsula for lake freighters wanting a shortcut. The waterway and the towns of Houghton and Hancock sit roughly at lake level, with an elevation of about 600 feet above sea level. But hills lining the waterway on either side quickly climb several hundred feet. The Quincy Mine sits atop the hill only three-quarters of a mile away from the waterway, but 550 feet above it.

We saw Cog at Bombay Rock in Townsville - the crowd went WILD! Moshing was an absolute blast! we were right up the front in the thick of it - I could barely hear the vocals! I was pissed as a nit, but still managed to take some good photos (I am still surprised I could point, frame and shoot when I had imbiled a bottle of bourbon between 8pm and 9pm, then kept drinking at the gig :giggle: pure magic!)

This is Lucius Borich, the drummer - and my favourite photo I took of the the bands.

This was the first Cog Mountain Railway in the world, and a 'must do' for any railway enthusiast who is visiting New Hampshire. Mt Washington is 6288 feet high, and has the dubious distinction of having had the highest ever windspeed recorded on the summit in April 1934 - 231mph. Luckily it was only gusting up to 71mph the day we went, with a temperature of 24 degrees F - we didn't stay outside for long! . It was a very rocky ride in cramped carriage, and taking photos was not easy. The track is supported on wood, and the amount of broken pieces lying by the side of the track was more than a little disturbing.

Cogs in the mashing tun, Southwick Brewery museum. Didn't want to use flash and it was dark so had to open aperture right up and take as slow as I dare while handheld, hence not perfect sharpness.
