A cafe opened late-2011 just near Archway station. Cute owl logo. The food is decent. (Older photo of it.)
Address: 37 Junction Road.

London Breakfast [me]
A pregnant veiled woman working on something, a group of young girls giggling in the corner, a man and woman holding hands across the table off camera to the left.... this is not the same crowd as in the traditional cafes! I'll post a picture of an 'ahwa' for contrast, just as soon as my husband comes and I feel comfortable going to one for old times sake! The ahwas are mainly outdoors on sidewalks or alleys, they serve shisha (water pipes for tobacco) and turkish coffee, and are primarily male spaces -- women sitting alone would be harassed or at least thought ill of. The new Western-style cafes, which have all appeared since I was last here in 2000, are just what you'd expect from Starbucks and the like (lattes, mochas, etc.), but with free internet and table service.
Sure they serve coffee. And tea. And lots of other drinks and goodies besides the main attraction.
Remember: there's a difference between Amsterdam's Coffeeshops and Coffee Houses

Coffeeshop The Bulldog has several locations throughout Amsterdam.
This one, at Leidseplein, is located in former Police Station Number 14 -- which long served as Amsterdam's police headquarters.
Incidentally, the new smoking ban also applies to coffeeshops -- but only covers tobacco -- not Cannabis.
Update, Nov. 21, 2008: This location of The Bulldog is scheduled to close as the City of Amsterdam closes 43 coffeeshops located too close to high schools.

coffeeshop // oslo
muffins, coffee, good music, quality people watching, and upside down bikes. it's not the coziest of the coffeeshops, but between the good vibe and roasting their own coffee, it just makes me happy and yields good drawings.
- d*s guest blog score: 5 out of 5 sketchbooks.
He came into this little coffee shop in Columbus, NE scurried over to the coffee carafes & grabbed a cup of coffee. Then came over, sat down, and told me that he always wears that cross medallion. When I asked him where he got it, he said, "Oh, I don't know. I think maybe here." (The coffee shop sold a lot of religious-y books & bric-a-brac, so this is actually quite possible.) He also said that he delivers six paper routes and he hoped that on Easter Sunday his papers came early so that he could get them all delivered and still make it to Grand Island in time for Easter services. He then told me all about his bike and that his other one broke, but he has six of them with baskets to put the papers in for delivery. I wanted to try to get a shot of him on the bike, too, but he was too quick and disappeared before I could get out there to snap the shot.
