Photograph taken at an altitude of Two hundred and thirty five metres at 15.15pm on Tuesday May 7th 2024 off South Street in Rhayader, Mid-Wales from the Low level professional photography hide at Gigrin Farm feeding station.
The Red Kite (Milvus Milvus) is a medium sized bird of prey (Raptor) in the Accipitridae family, and was saved from national extinction by a long running protection programme. It has now been successfully re-introduced into England and Scotland, and Wales, and they are listed under schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside act, currently with a green status.
They can reach 66cms in length with up to a 195cms wingspan, and there around 4,600 breeding pairs in the UK in 2024.

In this session we will present the work performed in the European project Immersify which is dedicated to researching and developing tools, content, and spaces for immersive media. We will start with a presentation summarizing the work on video codecs, media players, and game engines plugins for highly immersive and interactive media. The next-generation of immersive media applications demand ultra high quality video beyond 8K resolution, combined with interactive capabilities, and 3D and immersive audio, which have been the focus of the Immersify project during its almost 3 years of research and development.

The original intention here was to compare a Fraps capture side by side with a Hypercam capture of the same challenging material (in this case a benchmark courtesy of Crysis) for a subjective indication of dropped frames, pauses in capture and general image quality. In practice though, Hypercam needed soo much tweaking to perform reasonably at even relatively small frame sizes of 800x600 at 30fps and 24/32bit colour, the comparison was over before it really began.
Although it looks ok here if you ignore the dropped frames, the Hypercam component had to be captured as a raw uncompressed stream which isn't very practical. The extra overhead imposed by the few basic codecs that were tested proved to be too much at anything more than 16 bit colour depth, resulting in captures that were either butt ugly or so mangled as to be useless.
It does demonstrate some shortcomings of the Fraps codec too though, with what seems to be some sort of contrast/gamma shift in the Fraps output, as well as a handful of dropped frames. As their codec appears to be proprietary and non configurable, there's probably not much that can be done about the image quality. Must look into that.
Hypercam is far from perfect, and even to get this far a couple of known bugs had to be sidestepped, but to be fair this is their free version (v2.27) which might not have much in common with the commercial offering (v3.x). On the plus side it's far more configurable than Fraps, it's free, it isn't confined to game-type use, it's free, you can choose the codec to use, it's free, there's no artificial limitation of recording length and no watermarks. Oh and it's free.
Ok Fraps is free too.. albeit the crippled version.
Before giving up on Hypercam completely I'm going to make one last attempt with a higher performance codec like Divx if it's still available. Otherwise Xvid.

How else to start the New Year other than visiting a heritage railway for a steam gala?
Between the 28th and 30th of January 2022, the Great Central Railway ran their 'Winter Steam Gala', which was host to two visiting locomotives; these were Ex-Southern/BR unrebuilt Battle of Britain no. '34072, 257 Squadron', and ex-BR Standard 4 Tank no. '80080'. A selection of the railway's home steam fleet was in operation on the day, as well as a diesel railcar providing shuttles between Loughborough and Rothley. The railway ran a busy timetable full of services and freight trains, so there was plenty to see and travel behind on the day. This video covers Saturday (29th of January) of the event.
Due to this video's length, it has been broken down into ‘Chapters’ where certain parts of the video have been labelled correspondingly. LS = Lineside; all shots taken from stations and vantage points. WS = Windowside; all shots taken from the droplights of passenger trains – the locomotive/s hauling it will be added to. You can view these chapters in the video playback bar or in the description, where they’ll be listed with the timecode.
I have also decided to film galas such as these with the camera's Intelligent Auto' mode from now on. With all the movement I do during the day, it saves having to change the settings all the time.
Other than that, it was a great day out and an equally great kickstart to the year ahead. Thanks to all those who organised the gala and made it happen.

First mainline steam recording for the year!
Ex-BR Standard 7 no. '70000, Britannia' is seen charging past Noose Lane road crossing near Portobello Junction, running twenty minutes early, on a light engine move from Kidderminster to its home base in Crewe.
The engine has recently returned to operational order after an overhaul and had been on test trails at the Severn Valley Railway since January. This is the locomotive's first run on the national network metals since August of 2020.

Back into the park using the HEVC codec. Much happier with this output than the first video as the light was fading at this point. Keeping three minute videos to below 200MB seems to be working OK.

Cork (/kɔːrk/; Irish: Corcaigh, pronounced [ˈkoɾkɪɟ], from corcach, meaning "marsh") is a university city in south-west Ireland, in the province of Munster, which had a population of 125,622 in 2016.[3]
The city is situated on the River Lee which splits into two channels at the western end and divides the city centre into islands. They reconverge at the eastern end where the quays and docks along the river banks lead outwards towards Lough Mahon and Cork Harbour, which is one of the largest natural harbours in the world by navigational area.[6][7]
Expanded by Viking invaders around 915, the city's charter was granted by Prince John, as Lord of Ireland, in 1185. Cork city was once fully walled, and the remnants of the old medieval town centre can be found around South and North Main streets.
The city's cognomen of "the rebel city" originates in its support for the Yorkist cause during the English 15th century Wars of the Roses.[8] Corkonians often refer to the city as "the real capital"[9] in reference to its role as the centre of forces opposing the Anglo-Irish Treaty during the Irish Civil War.[10]
