I wrote a contribution for the upcoming 3GPP meeting on Monday detailing statistical significance tests to facilitate making accurate comparisons in the results of a speech codec intelligibility test I worked on at work. I had to do that because people were interpreting the results to say things that benefitted their position that weren't correct.

I suppose lots of people work more hours than I normally do, but starting in October I started working more than I ever have (except in college). It hasn't let up since.

In any case, the thing that I want to remember about this Saturday is heading out later in the night, meeting up with friends for drinks and meeting a new friend. That was a significant positive event.

Incêndio atinge comunidades do Bode e Beira Rio, no Pina

Um incêndio tomou conta das palafitas das comunidades do Bode e da Beira Rio, no bairro do Pina, Zona Sul do Recife. Segundo informações dos moradores, o fogo teria começado por volta das 17h desta segunda-feira (19). As chamas foram controladas por volta das 20h e a Coordenadoria de Defesa Civil do Recife (Codecir) está no local para fazer a contagem dos desabrigados.

Ainda de acordo com os residentes do local, o Corpo de Bombeiros (CB) só teria chegado à área atingida duas horas depois, quando as chamas já haviam tomado conta das casas.

Segundo informações dos moradores, praticamente todas as casas, cerca de 350, foram atingidas. Poucas pessoas conseguiram salvar seus pertences das palafitas. Muitos ficaram apenas com a roupa do corpo e, ainda assim, ajudaram a apagar o fogo com baldes.

There are many good things about the new Sony a7RIII - improved battery life, better autofocus and video codecs (if you like that sort of thing), but the best thing is how much it has reduced the prices of used a7RII's.

I've done a lot of noise testing of the a7RII against my beloved D7200 and they are essentially the same. According to the DxOMark bench tests, so is the dynamic range. And yet...

I step outside my back door (literally) and shoot this hand held with a £40 lens. And I'm surprised at the results. OK, M42 is not the hardest object in the sky to image, but we suffer from such bad light pollution that I normally don't bother with any astrophotography. A hand held snapshot on the a7RII produces this image. And then the penny dropped. Noise is not the issue. With digital files, you can make noise go away. Signal is the key factor here. I've got no reason to doubt the DxOMark bench tests, but in the hand, the deeper pixels of the Sony sensor outperform expectations. It's far from the perfect photograph - you don't use a 50mm lens for astrophotography - but it's a pretty damn good sensor test.

Which gives me a problem. I have strong emotional attachment to my D7200, easily the best camera I've ever owned. And yet...

The Great Blue Heron (Ardea Herodias) is a wading bird in the Heron family Ardeidae and found in North America, Central America, the Caribbean and Galapagos Islands. One of the largest of Herons, it has a head to tail length of 01-137 centimetres (36-54 inches) and a wingspan of 187-201 centimetres (66-79 inches).

They are found where my family live, and naturally very wary of mankind, flying off as soon as you are within fifty to one hundred yards of them.

The Red Kite (Milvus Milvus) is a medium sized bird of prey (Raptor) in the Accipitridae family, and was saved from national extinction by a long running protection programme. It has now been successfully re-introduced into England and Scotland, and Wales, and they are listed under schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside act, currently with a green status. They can reach 66cms in length with up to a 195cms wingspan, and there around 4,600 breeding pairs in the UK in 2024.

Photograph taken at an altitude of One hundred and twenty three metres at 11.58am on Monday 5th June 2023 off Mayfair Drive in the grounds of Mt Tolmie Park in Victoria on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

The Anise swallowtail (Papilio zelicaon) is a common swallowtail butterfly of western North America. The upper and lower sides of its wings are black, but the upper wing has a broad yellow stripe across it, giving the butterfly an overall yellow appearance.The wingspan is 52 to 80 mm (2.0 to 3.1 in). of 187-201 centimetres (66-79 inches) and it's adult butterfly lifespan is between 6 to 14 days.

In March, technician contacts me and gives me specs as to how the projection can go with the available equipment that I have. The decision is made to go with 2 computers, not my original idea (1st image). Before this, there was talk of going yet another method (more expensive)...but there appeared to be a pause in the communication line...anyway, so as soon as I got notice I prepared my machines and ran several video tests... It is also a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation. It is over 300 acres, and is part of an extensive wildlife corridor together with Petts Wood and the Jubilee Country Park.

Here we see a Black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), in flight across a snowy December sky.

They are found in much of the Palearctic including Canada and Europe. In Canada it is called the Common black-headed gull.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Six metres at 11.42am on Monday 29th May 2023 off 2903 Ocean Boulevard, Victoria, on the Esquimalt Lagoon Migratory Bird Sanctuary, on the Juan De Fuca Strait, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

The pathways here are strewn with driftwood and foliage that provide food and nesting material for the many species of birds which visit. The Lagoon is one of seven Migratory Bird Sanctuaries in British Columbia, and an important stopover for birds journeying between North and South America. Visitors include geese and Swans, Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons, plus many other species of birds.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Two metres at 20:41pm on Thursday 25th May 2023 around sunset at Patricia Bay , a body of salt water that extends East from the Saanich Inlet and forms part of the North Saanich shoreline in the District of North Saanich in British Columbia. It features a beautiful park which is at the south end of the Scoter Trail. Formerly known as Union Bay, the bay was named after Princess Patricia of Connaught, daughter of the Duke of Connaught who was Governor General in 1912.

The park has ties to transportation and the waterfront, and their pivotal role in the development of North Saanich. It is also tied to the development of the Victoria International Airport and military aviation efforts during the Second World War. In 1937, the airport was developed as one of six Royal Canadian Air Force Station training facilities on Vancouver Island.

The land was originally settled by the Tseycum First Nation (Union Bay Indian Reserve No.4) , one of four Saanich villages of Southern Vancouver Island in the area and part of the Northern Straits Coast Salish language group.

In the Sencoten langauge Tseycum is spelled Wsikem and means Land of Clay. The languages spoken include Lkwungen, Malchosen, Semiahmoo, SENĆOŦEN andT’Sou-ke and in 2023 the Chief is Tanya Jimmy, who was elected in July 2019. The Tseycum people have five reserves located at:

Bare Island 9, Goldstream 13, Pender Island 8, Saturna Island 7 and Union Bay 4.

It is also a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation. It is over 300 acres, and is part of an extensive wildlife corridor together with Petts Wood and the Jubilee Country Park.
