The 12th and 13th of November 2021 would see both new build LNER/BR Peppercorn A1 no. '60163, Tornado' and ex-LMS/BR Duchess no. '6233, Duchess of Sutherland' operate within the West Midlands on the national rail network.
We first see 'Tornado' at Longbridge on a light engine move from York to St Philips, Bristol, in order to operate 'The Cheshireman' railtour the next day.
Our second and final view is of 'Duchess of Sutherland' passing through Bescot Stadium on 'Vintage Trains' 'Welsh Marches Express' railtour from Tyseley to Hereford.
Turn your speakers on, push that HD button and then finally that full screen one there > up a bit ^
Or better still download the 1920x1280 high quality version (needs DivX codec). You can see the bubbles better.
I got the syphon coffee brewer out this afternoon to make a cup for me and Pam, and to have a bit of fun :-). I love getting the camping stove out and firing everything up, it's ace. The light was low and shining through the front window as Pam lay patiently waiting on the sofa reading her book. It must have taken an hour even though the clip is just made from 10 minutes worth of shots. It took a while to polish the syphon, set up the camera, the reflector, and the timer. The timer was set to trigger every 1 second and I ended up with about 900 shots trimmed down to 600 and then condensed in to 90 seconds.
Thank you to Daddy Scrabble for the lovely plinky plonky intro to his tune Flying pea v.1 (Daddy_Scrabble) / CC BY-NC-SA 3.0. It fits perfectly. I just searched for free music to put to the clip and stumbled across his music pretty early on. Thanks for sharing dude.
Most of my photos have a Creative Commons Attribution license by the way (This one is noncommercial to match Daddy Scrabble's). They can be downloaded at full res and I don't resize anything so you should be able to get a good resolution. The CC Atribution license lets you distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon my stuff even commercially as long you credit me for the original creation. Just a link and a heads up will make me smile. I think more people should share and enjoy sharing, stop locking their stuff down. Share it or make money from it, just don't keep it close to your chest and be grumpy. Well, you can if you want but I'd sooner create and spread the love man.
Shots taken with the 40D down low with a 3 stop ND grad trying to tame the window, and a big silver reflector on the left for some fill. I used Avidemux to put all the shots together and put a little fade on the end, for which I duplicated the last frame 30 times. I used audacity to trim the audio and fade that just before the tune starts picking up.

Hosted by TransLink and South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority, the Trans-Expo 2010 is an annual event aimed at bringing transit professionals together across Canada. This year the gathering is held at the Vancouver Convention Centre on November 16, 2010. Nearly 100 exhibitors set up booths at West Exhibit Hall C to showcase their mostly environmental-friendly products.
Quite a good number of newer and yet everyday technologies are also incorporated into the public transit system, many with sustainability features. Diesel-Electric hybrid engine, LED lighting, solar-powered devices, GPS, Wi-Fi, H.264 video codec etc. Many of these technologies are not alien to the average consumer.
So much for the new stuff, but objects that have interesting heritage values are not forgotten either. The Transit Museum Society had an on-site exhibit with a few antique transit buses on display. These are the ones that your parents or grandparents used to ride. In fact, BC has been building interurban buses over 100 years ago. In 1905, the BC Electric Railway shop in New Westminster built Car 1207 for opening of the new Steveston line by way of the Arbutus Corridor connecting Vancouver and Richmond. Many long-time residents among those communities still remember the streetcar line and some have longed for its return.

In fact this is almost usual station locomotive. There was the international division of a labor in Communist block. And Czech built ChKD Praha of 3o-3o
(or Co-Co) layout Diesel locomotive has been chosen as standard station/shunting locomotive for Soviet Railroads and for other Communist countries. In Soviet Union it was named ChME-3 (Czech-built, station, with electric transmission). It has recommended itself from the best side and circa 7500 pieces have been built. It was best Czechs' business for all their history. And now ChME-3 are carrying almost all station works in all post-Soviet countries, also being frequentely used in suburban traffic.
But this piece is unique simulteniously being 'named' locomotive. Named locomotives are not rare all over the world. But in this special case term 'named' means that this is a kind of award or moral stimulation. This practice is still kept since 1920 when for some locomotives names of war and revolution heroes have been given. Such 'named' locomotives were credited for best crews for combat heroism and labour achievements - as a sort of award, apart of honor badges, medals, etc. It was considered as a great honor for locomotives. But nobless obligee! And locomotive staff (or 'brigade' as it is called here) had to keep such locomotive in excellent technical state. And also to fulfil combat or labour feats equal to those of a hero to give his name.
Locomotive brigades were usually 'attached' to the one and the same locomotive for years and decades. It became a real second house for a staff. Therefore locomotives were beloved and pampered by crew. Locomotive shining by fresh painting and polished brass details was the subject of pride of a staff - it belongs to railroaders 'Codecs of honor'. At the steam age such cases were often when locomotive staff was unsatisfied by standard paint given by a railroad. And a crew bought some 'special' paint from it's personal funds.
We may see from these shots that nothing changed at this branch despite the change of political system. And 'named' locomotives tradition is kept almost a century.
And this locomotive is named in honor of N.E. Kalinichenko, the full Knight of Soldier fame order, receiving during the WWII the stars of all three degreess. Apropos the Soldier fame is rare award being given only for privates or sergeants and only for combat feats carried in specially hard and dangerous conditions. From 15 millions men and women who served in Red Army during WWII only 2656 became full Knights of this order - including four women.
This award system repeates exectly the Soldier's St Georgian Cross - the highest and most valuable soldier's award of Russian Empire. Both orders - Empire and Soviet were carried on the same insignia band with orange-n-black strips. So called Georgian or Guardian colors. It's well depicted on shields on both sides of locomotive.

The Great Blue Heron (Ardea Herodias) is a wading bird in the Heron family Ardeidae and found in North America, Central America, the Caribbean and Galapagos Islands. One of the largest of Herons, it has a head to tail length of 01-137 centimetres (36-54 inches) and a wingspan of 187-201 centimetres (66-79 inches). They are found where my family live, and naturally very wary of mankind, flying off as soon as you are within fifty to one hundred yards of them.

Well I landed up spending most of my day off in bed. Such a lazy sod I am ;-)
Nah, I seemed to have picked up some bug, (that's what I get for working with members of the public!), and it appears to have gestated enough now to want to escape from my body using whatever exit is possible.
Oh yes, all of them! (I shall leave out the gory details!)
I hate being ill because I still want to get on with things despite my bodies objections and the demands from my wife Teresa to get back into bed. So I quickly sneaked out this afternoon to have a stab at some time lapse with this old Fuji of mine, a minutes walk up the lane, fifteen minutes of shooting and an extremely brisk walk back clenching a certain part of my anatomy which hindered the walk! Made it just in time.........
Anyway, enough of the gross stuff, here was the basic process.
Camera in manual mode, check, white balance not on auto, check, exposure set for sky and ground, check, sturdy tripod, check. So I wrapped a velcro strap around the camera and an old shirt button on the shutter to fire off the camera remembering to turn the LCD off to preserve battery life.
All was going well for a few minutes when a walker appeared with a very large Labrador that couldn't resist seeing what I was up to and bounded over knocking the tripod as it got to me. Damn, no point stopping now this is a test after all. Fuss of the Labrador whilst keeping it away from the camera, quick chat with the walker and I sat back down next to the clicking camera. Wasn't too long before my body launched a nuclear strike and I had to rush home very quickly(!)
Well, now what am I supposed to do with these 1000 odd frames? According to most of the web resources, (and I use that last word loosely!), you simply buy software. I don't think so thank you very much, this is supposed to be a bit of fun after all and I'll decide later if I'd want to be pursuing it further and possibly buy something! Luckily I came across MakeAVI and it does the job, especially for free. But then I had to find out about video codecs and how some people want to charge you for these things too(!) Again a quick scour of the old 'tinternet' came up with the goods with Xvid and away we went. Now I had a massive video file, (100's of Mb's worth!), and slowly loaded it into Virtual Dub and started trying to figure out what I could do. Apparently a lot as it seems, filters for levels, brightness, contrast, (which helped with the cloud/ground poor exposure), smoothing, (for getting rid of the flicker typical of a time lapse), as well as a host of other things. I probably spent more time finding out what all these things were than using them!!
But I got there......sort of. Things still flicker and a check of the still images showed birds of all kind flitting in and out of frame, a kestrel for a moment, a massive dragonfly, butterflies, typically all the things that you try hard to photograph without success and here they are all over the damn place without even trying!
Still, a lot learned and best of all I totally enjoyed it :-)
Things to do include modifying the old Fuji to have a 2.5mm jack to accept an electronic release, (a quick poke around it's insides reveals just enough space between the power and usb socket - nice). I also realised my 'dolly' isn't going to be of much use for wide angled landscape time lapses, (doh!), so I might build a pan head as well. Especially as I have some more stepper motors and a spy of that old video recorder I pulled to bits has a nice big rotary bearing in the form of the VHS tape head :-)
Right, got to dash, natures calls. Again!
An old man nearly in his 60'ies or 70'ies is sitting on a bench in a bus station. He wears a black hat, black sunglasses and a black jacket. He is emphasized in a conversation with a smartphone. Seems he has some secret deals or conspiracy intentions.

The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus), derives it's name from the Greek for 'Sea eagle', and the 'bald' denotation actually derives from an older meaning of 'white headed'.Bald Eagles can be up to forty inches in length with a wingspan up to seven and a half feet and can weigh up to 6.3kgs. The females are generally 25% larger than the males.

I simply uploaded the raw video to Flickr. And iMovie is able to edit it without additional conversion.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Two hundred and seven metres at 09.51am on Thursday May 9th 2024, ten miles East of Aberystwyth at Pontarfynach (The bridge on the Mynach), or Devil's Bridge as it is known.
The village and community are in Ceredigion, where above the River Mynach is a series of three stacked bridges, constructed hundreds of years apart, from which the village gets its English name.
The lowest arch is medieval, the second bridge was built in 1753 and the iron bridge built in 1901. The steps down to the 300ft drop are known as Jacob's Ladder, leading to the waterfalls.

Photograph taken at 12:12pm on Monday 3rd March 2025 at an altitude of Fifty seven metres in the Grounds of Warnham Nature Reserve in Horsham, West Sussex. The Millpond dates back to the 16th Century and parts of the woodland dates back even further to the 13th Century. A beautiful location for a walk, or to sit amongst nature and so see birds and butterflies in their natural habitat.
The Great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) is a member of the grebe family of water birds. The bird is characterised by its distinctive appearance, featuring striking black, orange-brown, and white plumage, and elaborate courtship display that involves synchronised dances and displays, as seen here with this pair.

As shown at D21 Leipzig Porno 2.0 exhibition, november-december 2008.
I selected pictures of male hands grabbing the female model -- a typical scene in a gonzo porn movie.
Influenced by amateur porn, Gonzo porn try to shoot from a First Person point of view, hence giving an impression of immersion and/or participation (Before being applied to porn, gonzo is originally a journalistic term).
With cheap digital cameras and the broadcasting power of internet, there have been a explosion of gonzo porn, both amateur and professionnally produced. The pseudo-realistic and home-made set-up seems to have a special appeal for the male porn consumers.
Ah, and finally, as you know to shoot is both firing a firearm and shooting a picture,. So the FPS reference in the title is kind of a nerd joke, as it's both transparent and very very first degree :-)

Hosted by TransLink and South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority, the Trans-Expo 2010 is an annual event aimed at bringing transit professionals together across Canada. This year the gathering is held at the Vancouver Convention Centre on November 16, 2010. Nearly 100 exhibitors set up booths at West Exhibit Hall C to showcase their products.

This image was very challenging for several reasons:
First, I used "eyepiece projection".
Eyepiece projection uses a tele-extender tube to connect the camera (video in this case) a few inches behind the eyepiece of the telescope.
The result is more magnification, but a much dimmer image.
---------------------------------------------------------
Then, I used Canon's 640x480 crop video mode
The 640x480 crop mode, produces a 1:1 pixel resolution, resulting in no information loss, but a much smaller canvas to record the image on. This video mode, combined with eyepiece projection, produced videos that had the following challenges:
The first problem was just to FIND Saturn in the camera's field of view. In the eyepiece, it was plainly visible - even basically centered. But once I screwed the tele-extender on, then hooked up the camera, most of the time I saw... nothing. Using a tele-extender, along with a 640x480 canvas, produces a seriously small field of view. Just the added weight of the camera is enough to mess up the alignment.
And when I was lucky enough to center it over the Camera's sensor, Saturn was so large, that I had to record it diagonally, just to fit it in the 640x480 frame. Just the slightest drift caused part of the planet to be off frame. Every little shake, every footstep, every slight breeze, caused enough shaking to ruin the image.
Also, Saturn was so dim, that I had to use a video ISO of 3200, just to be able to see the planet. This created an enormous amount of digital noise in the videos. And even then, the videos were still dim.
------------------------------------------------------------
The next step was to run the video into Registax.
Registax is a beautiful program... when it works. It takes all of the individual frames of a video, and aligns and stacks them on top of each other. The random camera noise ends up cancelling itself out (since it's random), and the real information accumulates, resulting in a huge improvement in the signal to noise ratio. The end result is a final image that is far superior to any individual frame.
At least that's the way it's supposed to work. Problem number one is, Registax won't open most videos. It has a limited number of formats that it supports, and even then, the codec has to be supported. Personally, I've had about a 95% video failure rate.
I've had better luck using individual image frames, extracted from videos, and saved as .pngs or .bmps. But even then, if the planet is located towards the top of some frames, and towards the bottom of others, or left and right.. basically if there's any substantial drift in the planet's location, then the program fails. Since my polar alignment technique is to basically point the tripod to where I think north is, I usually end up with a lot of drift.
However, I've had 100% success rate (so far) using images where the planet was centered in every frame. The problem there is, it then becomes my responsibility to align 100's of individual video frames (over 700 for this image) onto a larger background frame, so it's not so claustrophobic, and then save them again as .bmps, and then run them into Registax. Doing 25 images at a time, was taking me about 25 minutes of time. Aligning 25... 50... 75... images was tedious. Aligning 100... 200... 300... was torture. So then I thought...
--------------------------------------------------------------
Why not make my own program to handle this chore?
Using Visual C++, I've always managed to find a way to create any type of program that I've ever attempted. Mostly little games and gadgets and doohickies - some of them pretty cool if I do say so myself.
So I thought, How hard can it be to create a program that:
1. Creates an 800 x 600 bitmap.
2. Accepts drag and drop images.
3. Loads those images into RAM.
4. Determines the brightness and color of the background of each frame.
5. Fills the background of the new image with that color.
6. Locates the planet in the old image.
7. Finds the geographical center of the planet.
8. Moves the old image out of RAM, and onto the new canvas, centering the planet.
9. Saves the resulting image as a .bmp in the same folder as the original, using the same name, but with a few characters appended onto the end.
10. Does all this automatically, with no input from the user.
I whipped it out in 2 nights and it works BEAUTIFULLY. At first I dragged and dropped a single video frame onto my new program (which I call AstroStax). Immediately, it generated a new, larger image - with the exact matching background of the dropped image, and with the planet perfectly centered. So then I tentatively dragged 4 images at once, and again it worked. 4 new images popped up in 1 second.
So, since I had about 220 images, still remaining to align, I figured I might as well go for it. If it crashes - it crashes.
It didn't crash. I dragged 220 images, all at once, onto my program, and in about TEN SECONDS, it spit out 220 larger images, all with the same background as the original, all with the planet perfectly centered. Every single image was how I wanted it.
Aligning and saving 220 images manually the way I had been doing it, would have taken me 3 1/2 hrs of tedium, and over a thousand clicks of the mouse.
Now that's been replaced by:
Drag
Let go
Wait 10 seconds.
I have hours of video that I've taken over the years, of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn that I've never quite gotten around to processing because I never had the time. Now I'm looking forward to seeing what I can get out of them.
Who knows, maybe I'll attempt to upgrade AstoStax to the point where I won't need Registax at all. It would be a lot of work, but I think I could do it.

This series is part of an ongoing research on visual ways to dissolve pornographic imagery in abstraction and absurd.
For the Scrambled series, using video footage downloaded from Internet, I exploit the artifacts, errors, blurs inherent to heavy digital compression and incomplete files.
Dozens of snapshots are generated. Here, the creative process in itself rely on selecting the right images : identifiable as pornographic, but somehow deactivated.

Paul B. Davis' probing, contemplative second solo show at SEVENTEEN represented a bold step forward for the artist...though not necessarily one he expected to take. It was instigated by a semi-voluntary rejection of a practice that, until very recently, was central to his creative output and figured prominently in his debut exhibition at the gallery - Intentional Computing (2007). A curious turn of events led to this unforeseen repudiation and redefinition of practice:
'I woke up one morning in March to a flood of emails telling me to look at some video on YouTube. Seconds later saw I Kanye West strutting around in a field of digital glitches that looked exactly like my work. It fucked my show up...the very language I was using to critique pop content from the outside was now itself a mainstream cultural reference.'
Contentiously dubbed 'datamoshing', (or 'compression aesthetics', as Davis prefers to describe it), this practice ultimately emerged out of artefacts inherent in the compression algorithms of digitally distributed media. Davis seized upon the glitchy pixellation that is often present while viewing YouTube clips or Digital TV, and repurposed it as a tool of cultural rupture. Alongside other artists such as Paper Rad, Sven Konig and Takeshi Murata, he engaged this effect as a tool for aestheticized intervention, a fresh framework for analysis, and a new visual language.
In contemporary culture, mainstream media pilfering of independent artistic production is expected. Moreover, it's a generative force - renegade practice and/or methodology is forced into evolution by the appropriation of its pioneering techniques. But for Davis this perhaps inevitable incorporation by Kanye West, the self proclaimed 'voice of this generation', served as a trigger to directly engage his growing concern that current artistic methods for grappling with digital culture - hacks, remixes, and 'mash-ups' among them - are ill-equipped for sustaining serious and self-reflexive critical examination. As Davis has commented, 'These methods generate riffs...restatements or celebrations of existing cultural behaviours, and artists who use them are seemingly unable to either offer incisive alternatives or generate new cultural forms. I was one of these artists, making these riffs, and I'd come to realize their limitations.'
Define Your Terms (or Kanye West Fucked Up My Show) concerns Davis' attempt to understand, react to, and depart from this crossroads. The works in the exhibition, many of which disavow his previous modes of hacking or mashing-up existing digital artefacts, have all been produced in the past two months, and will instead propose some alternate strategies for provocatively getting under the skin of Civilisation 2.0.
In Codec (2009), Davis' created his own proprietary video compression/decompression algorithm, free of now-standardized templating and presets. This algorithm is - defiantly - unavailable for commercial use. With Critical Space Headgear (2009) a head-mounted video camera is fed to a head-mounted display, the resolution of camera output and viewed input being reduced to 320x200 pixels thereby creating a self-mediated 'reality' that's flattened in real-time to the same dimensions as YouTube. In The Symbol Grounding Problem (2009) Davis simultaneously ingests a bacon sandwich while defecating in a perspex box as philosopher Luciano Floridi narrates the viewer through what they see onscreen as the interaction of dynamic informational entities. Floridi asserts that as we move closer towards the singularity - the future point in which human consciousness merges with the consciousness of our machinic progeny - our own experiential trajectory in the physical world will become secondary to the interaction of informationally-modeled simulacrum. This inevitable futurity is reinforced while experiencing the most base, mundane of bodily functions - simply taking a poo.
In this way, the works in this show are built. They are constructed out of whole cloth. There are no naive uses of technology here as they turn away from seemingly arbitrary, uninterrogated appropriation of digi-cultural artefacts and seek to offer alternative strategies for taking on the protocols of new media. In essence, Define Your Terms (or Kanye West Fucked Up My Show) is an exhibition about Davis breaking free from his own creative paradigm and setting forth a revivified agenda. Through radical reevaluation of his process, Davis has offered some new approaches for tackling the hovering questions that are relentlessly generated by this - our age of over-caffeinated cultural cycles, empty signifiers, and supreme technological oversaturation.

Photo of the Radisson Blu hotel building in Bristol. Taken using a 8mm lens in one shot ( not HD) with a long exposure setting on the camera.
The long exposure helped to enhance the blueness of the sky colour at night...one that we often associate with daytime.
The aim was to compliment the name-sake of "Radisson Blu" and the striking building.
It is a building that can often capture and reflect in some of the best and last light that falls on Bristol city centre in summer months - especially at sunset.
This photo was taken at around 11pm (in June) on a NIkon D7100 camera.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Twenty eight metres at 16:56pm on Sunday 3rd 2023 off 1st Street and Beacon Avenue looking back towards the Bevan Avenue Fishing Pier in Sidney on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
The site which the Town of Sidney now sits on is called "SET,TINES", which means "chest sticking out," in reference to the way the land juts out into the water. The W̱SÁNEĆ First Nation People have lived on the Saanich Peninsula for thousands of years, creating and dwelling in winter villages throughout the Region before any contact with European settlers. They are saltwater people, with the importance of the sea being paramount to their daily life.
In 1891, fifty acres of land owned by the Brethour family was subdivided in lots and registered as the Township of Sidney. By the close of 1892, there was a general store, a post office, a boat building shop, and a hotel. The name “Sidney” apparently came about when Julius Brethour, who became the first president of the Victoria and Sidney Railway gave it it's name. Sidney was incorporated as a village on September 30th, 1952, has enjoyed steady growth, and now boasts a population in excess of 12,300 residents according to the 2021 Census.
In the distance we see Mt Baker in Washington State, USA, an active glaciated andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades. Standing 3,286 metres tall, she was first ascended in 1868, her last eruption recorded in 1880.
The four Salishan language speaking First Nation bands nearest to Mount Baker know her by different names. Known to the Halkomelem as Kwelxá:lxw, Kwelshán (wounded by a shot) to the Lummi,Teqwúbe7 (snow-capped peak) to Lushootseed speakers along the Skagit River, and to the Nooksack language, the ice- and snow-covered top is Kweq’ Smánit (white mountain) while the high meadows around the peak are Kwelshán (shooting place)”. There are also unsubstanciated references to Mt Baker as Komo Kulshan (pronounced kō-ō’mah’ kool-shän’), the name for the Middle Fork which originates from the glaciers such as Deming and Thunder on the western slopes, though Koma or Komo Kulshan is not a native name for the mountain in any of the twenty three collective Salishan languages.

Face Time HD y ráfagas frontales
