This beautiful bird of prey is very similar to the Lanner Falcon and is a distant cousin of the majestic Peregrine Falcon. They all have such wonderful markings especially under the eyes.
I captured this close-up image of a male mallard duck's side feathers along the river Skell during a visit to Ripon, North Yorkshire.

Some of the 20 vanilla cupcakes I made to go with an "Owl" themed 40th birthday cake.
I made each of the owls freehand using the run-out technique from a template that I'd traced, then piped and painted the details (eyes, beak, claws, feathers) by hand.
** Update** : Didn't realise at the time of making these, but I have since learned that the template owl picture provided to me in hard copy by the customer was from Sweetopia's blog, which you can check out here - an excellent blog of all things sweet and in particular intricately decorated cookies - definitely worth a look.
My owls were created by using a similar technique to the technique Sweetopia describes in her tutorial for the owl cookies, apart from I needed my owls to be freestanding so instead of icing them onto a cookie/fondant topper, they were done in the normal run-out way by icing them onto a (new and clean!) piece of acetate with the picture hand traced underneath, then removed and stuck on the cupcake toppers once fully dried. You can also buy something called butcher's wrap which is supposed to be more effective for creating run outs than acetate sheets as it is more porous so aids drying...although I have yet to lay my hands on this stuff though so can't pass judgment yet. The feathers on my owls were handpainted with a very fine paintbrush using edible colour diluted in a tiny amount of white alcohol (so it evaporated quickly and didn't eat into the dried R.I.).
Had to get a closeup of the turtle that was different. Now that Dallas County has both species of cooters, there will be more oddball turtles like this. He was nice enough to pose for his closeup.
