this boy walked straight to me...Gulp! was behind tree almost in lake.. another Gulp.
all he wanted , fortunately, was to sharpen those points on his antlers. I am always very aware of the dangers of these beautiful beasts... and go with caution.... he came to me, maybe had wrong perfume on?
Advocates Close is a narrow and steep alley in Edinburgh of medieval origin, redeveloped in the early 21st century.
The close leads from Market Street at the foot of Cockburn Street to the Royal Mile, exiting opposite St Giles Cathedral close to the Supreme Court of Scotland.
The street dates from at least the 15th century, and elements survive from at least the mid-16th century. At this time the street was a fashionable address, where the Scottish gentry and professionals would live with their family and servants. The name derives from the house of Sir James Stewart who was Lord Advocate of Scotland.
Adam Bothwell's house stands on the west side of the close and was originally accessed from Byers Close.
By the 19th century the Edinburgh gentry had abandoned the Old Town and moved to the New Town or suburbs. Streets such as Advocates Close passed to the lower classes and were split into tenements. In this form, given the huge density and dark, narrow streets, the area quickly became a slum. A major part of this stemmed from the lack of sewerage, with waste being thrown out of the window to run down the steep slope.
The main non-residential building in the 19th century was the Imperial Hotel, which stood at the lower end on the site of the Lord Advocate's house. This site was redeveloped several times: next as offices for the Edinburgh Evening News then as the main office for the Edinburgh Festival.

A number of 16th century buildings survive on the east side of the close. In the 1920s, as a result of slum clearance programmes, most of the buildings on the west side of the close were removed. This demolition retained various carved doorways but moved them together, where they now stand in a mutually impossible relationship for each to be used. The demolitions created a new view of the Scott Monument, which stands slightly off axis to the close.
The bronze plaque at the head of the close was added in 1935 by the City Architect, Ebenezer James MacRae.
The first renewal of interest in the street (other than as a viewpoint) was in 1993 when the newly created Old Town Conservation Committee chose to site their office in the oldest remaining building: at the head of the close on its east side. This involved a wholesale restoration of the building, revealing a large 16th century fireplace within and several painted ceilings. This block lost its top two floors in the slum clearance of the 1920s. A doorpiece slightly further down the close echoes the fireplace design.
I went back to the spot where I saw the Cardinals in this Rose Hip bush last week. Guess who was hiding in the branches? Yup, they were all there taking in in the sun. This bush is on the edge of the creek and I was able to get close without them seeing me. I took this shot through the branches with 10 Cardinals there.........lol No kidding it was quite something.
"Only a few female North American songbirds sing, but the female Northern Cardinal does, and often while sitting on the nest. This may give the male information about when to bring food to the nest. A mated pair shares song phrases, but the female may sing a longer and slightly more complex song than the male."

I was greeted by this Welcome Swallow (appropriately named!) who came quite close and presented me with this close up - hope you like it!

Whilst waiting for a sparrowhawk this afternoon (best not to ask), a female kestrel flew over and landed extremely close. A chance for a close-up of wild kestrel was too good to miss.
On the 20th October 2017 the Network Rail New Measurement Train passes Dawlish on the monthly trip from Old Oak Common to Paignton via Penzance and Teignmouth.

This is my last photo from our Sorrento holiday, taken in the hotel just before we handed the key in. It's the traditional family on holiday shot!
I wanted to thank you for following my holiday, which kept me going on Flickr for 7 months!! I am grateful to have this site to share my photos on. I would take the photos regardless, cos it's what I do when we go away, but it's such a bonus having this platform to share them from, particularly with our parents all gone. (I'm going all sentimental with Christmas so close!)

A close up of Talking Barbie and Ken (in my favourite 'Town Turtle' from 1969). I searched for a decent version of 'Little Bow Pink' with the tights for years, and can't believe I forgot to photograph it! The colour is actually a much deeper pink than it looks here. They are the grooviest couple at the Barbie Family House!
This Red Squirrel came really close to the hide yesterday (possibly within 10 feet approx.)
The red squirrel or Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is a species of tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus common throughout Eurasia. The red squirrel is an arboreal, primarily herbivorous rodent.
In Great Britain, Ireland, and in Italy numbers have decreased drastically in recent years. This decline is associated with the introduction by humans of the eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) from North America. However, the population in Scotland is stabilising due to conservation efforts, awareness and the increasing population of the pine marten, a European predator that selectively controls grey squirrels.
