Fanny Le'Bube, Dick Stones, Professor Von Arschut, and the ever faithful "Robot"

The Brothers-Brick really liked ZCerberus's Galaxy Explorer, so they blogged it. I really like it, so I built it in Studio. It looks quite complex, but it's really quite simple - all the fancy tricks are on the outside. Well, except the tricks needed to build the underside. As usual, I had to make that up all by myself because ZCerberus didn't post any picture of the bottom of his build. Because he didn't post pictures of the interior of the cargo bay, I didn't bother kitting it out with a lot of clips and tools either. Original here:

My ‘New’ Classic Space LEGao theme - homage to the great many classic space themes before

Updated with retractable gear, rebuilt backpack, and smaller, more stable side footpads

I've been able to find a little time to photoshop some more photos. This was a fun project, and I'm really glad I got to finish it.

Llwyngwril Systems designed the Lunar Lorry as an amphibious vehicle to be used in locations such as the Sea of Tranquility. Particular attention was paid to salt water performance and corrosion resistance. This was despite the fact that it had been known for centuries that the Moon's "seas" were devoid of water. When later questioned about the lorry's design, the notorious Vehicle Design Department just smirked and ran away giggling.

The Lunar Lorries proved useful for transporting large, heavy objects around the planet. A typical load was the Power Functions IR receiver and AAA battery pack seen here. The lorry employed a skid-steer design which was never particularly effective. After a short service life, the Lunar Lorries had their power plants and other equipment removed and were used as static displays at events promoting the lunar life.

I'm not quite sure why it doesn't work. I think that it's to do with the difference in the friction between the tyres and floor and force needed to bend the worm/cog combination out of form, which allows it to slip.

The XL-15 enters the LEGO City!

This set wouldn’t have been on my radar if it wasn’t for the buzz about the Lightyear film’s director being AFOL Angus MacLane (check out his builds on Flickr!).

Evidently, he pushed for the in-film design to have a yellow transparent canopy, reminiscent of the Classic Space elements.

He also had an interesting spot on LEGOCon, worth a check out.

The build of this one and a cat seater spaceship is substantial! As a medium sized ship it checks most boxes for me: fits all accessories, swoosh-ability is there, has mobile base in form of laptop (stretch), and droid in the Catbot (also stretch). No escape pod/rover, which loses some points when compared to the medium builds of my ‘90s childhood.

But the elements and connections this set brings to the table blow anything from my childhood away. There are a few elements that are super obscure.

Color scheme for the spaceship is great, can’t miss with light blue, white, and black with that yellow canopy.

Also bonus points for extra head/hair elements for minifigs.

Less stellar for me were the minifigs. Buzz looks pretty good, but I’d prefer the dome over a normal helmet (I’m sure that’s a movie plot detail). The other figs have nice printing, but are pretty mute brown, like something out of a Star Wars set.

The shoulder pauldrons for all of them are cumbersome to range of motion.

The rocket launcher build doesn’t really work out to be held, but I do appreciate the built up weapon/scanning accessories.

Very nice set, strong suggest for the building experience and MOC possibilities!

I left off the red stripes off the wings. Does it look cleaner? Worse? Let me know

I’ll be looking at more contemporary LEGO sets that are bringing back Classic Space soon!

Another Rover made from instructions found in the Lego Idea Book 250 (published in 1987).

This one is a big bigger (than my previous upload) and looks like the bastard son of sets 6882 and 6926 ^^ Very funny little thing, with unusual quantity of SNOT for its time.

I really wonder if some of the instructions found in the old Lego Idea Books are aborted ideas for real sets, or if they were imagined just for the books...

Instructions here :

"The LL-500 was named the "Elephant" after the distinctive shape its head-mounted radar dishes formed.

The Elephant's crew consisted of one pilot, one copilot, one scientist, and a handful of robots fit for the exploration missions the Elephant was deployed on."

I'm back! Not sure if I was gone or not, though. Last year I had a bit of a dark patch. I didn't build anything and stopped following Lego news. I didn't stop out of a disinterest in Lego, I stopped due to school, the pandemic, and my using all my free time learning music. (hurray I'm a musician now)

Anyway, this post is getting lengthy. Glad to be back!

Classic Space: where it all began. Although I intended to use an authentic Classic Space helmet without the visor, the shape of the chin piece prevented me from having the helmet on the shoulders securely. Thus, I chose to use a Futuron dark blue visor, which makes this nifty astronaut magnifigure a hybrid of both vintage LEGO Space sub-themes!

Don't you love that feeling of accomplishment!! Benny here is feeling great looking back on his achievement!!

1997’s Robo Master, the Big One from the bizarre RoboForce sub-theme!

That neon dome! And all the prints! It’s like a better version the Blacktron 2 pods, but it’s on this weird Beast Wars mecha. And it doesn’t detach to fly off. Bummer.

What does detach to fly off is pretty cool for how simplistic it is: a smaller Unitron Star Hawk II (#1789). A set design from another far superior Space sub-theme.

I don’t mean to hate on RoboForce this much, it looks cool, has tons of prints, neon transparent elements, and great minifigs with leg prints and updated helmet sculpts! All of that is awesome!

But why wasn’t this designed as a spacecraft? It would have been among the best. LEGO hadn’t figured out Mechs in ‘97, but they sure have now.

Final thought, what was the tail thing?

A weapon? A ‘robot’? A charger for the spacecraft?

More Retro Space LEGO sets to be featured soon, including more RoboForce

My second entry for JerryBuildsBricks‘s #jbbclassicremake challenge!

This time I’m back to space with the revamp of the classic 6950 - Mobile Rocket Transport set. I kept all the functions, the rear section is steered by a knob at the end, the cabin can hold 3 figs, there are 2 ladders on the sides which can be lowered and of course you can launch the big rocket at any time 😉 And You can still go offroad with it

The Telemetry Rover - Over Land - 1 or, TROLIs, were used to relay signals from experimental spacecraft and satellites. Each of its four sets of wheels could be independently driven and steered, which enabled it to be positioned with incredible accuracy on the surface of the planet.

Unfortunately the many motors and complex steering mechanism required frequent maintenance and were prone to malfunctions. Just like going to the supermarket, the red spaceman knew that he would always get the TROLI with a wonky wheel (as can be seen in this photo).

This started as a spare-parts build, which I then built in Studio and entered in the Ideas GWP contest as the "Blacktron Buzzkill." After that I found parts to build the center module. The yellow canopy came last. It's just about exactly the same length and width as the original set. A TIE fighter pilot and BB-9E astromech droid from Star Wars aren't exactly Blacktron, but I figure they've got enough black-costumed bad guy swagger to do the job.

During the early days of the Civil Space Police, they fielded the Solar Vanguard, a hybrid interceptor/perp transport.

The Solar Vanguard was mostly used on sleepy backwater worlds to apprehend rogue Blacktron agents committing minor offenses such as jay-walking, spitting, and public drunkeness.

Quick, well-armed, and holding an internal single holding cell, this is one Space Police craft not to take lightly.

After reading the Bricket Random Set Of The Day about set 5590 “Whirl and Wheel Super Truck” I had the urge to build the B model and convert it into both Futuron and Classic Space variants. The trans yellow windscreen is a bit shorter, and they don’t make the train doors in Medium Stone Grey, but I think I got pretty close!

The Planetary Cargo Transport is a short range scooter that is able to transport cargo and supplies around the CS base.

A large "Tarantula" space hopper touches down on a Trilobite platform, whilst a late-model 6806 Surface Hopper is refuelled on another pad.

Benny has a "Dragster, Dragster, DRAGSTER!", oh yea!

Suitable for use with the official LEGO® space microfigures.

...And a little hover-buggy pops out. Probably for when the rover gets stuck in the lunar dust on account of it's terrible ground clearance!

OK so this is probably not my best build but I love Classic Space and wanted to take part in Febrovery, which I've never done before :)

Switching from the Star Wars theme to the Classic Space theme is easy. Only a few parts and element needs to be switched over.

I'm happy with the thrusters.

The Landsport-C comes with a generous outboard O2 tank as standard, able to deliver up to 3 full lunar days of life-support.

Plus, our proprietary state-of-the-art avionics and telemetry package means you'll never get lost on the dark side of the moon!*

A self contained Research Base, built on a planet in the cold icy depths of space.

The first floor houses the main access airlock and the lab and bio-dome where the scientists carry out all their experiments.

The second floor houses the habitation block, with bunk beds, a kitchenette and toilet facilities.

The third floor has a store and laundry and a second airlock allowing roof access.

The roof contains all the communication equipment and an observation (or angry) dome.

There are many, many examples on Flickr and Eurobricks of beautifully detailed, realistic airlocks that are just static facades, built for show. The only working airlocks I've seen have simple, square hatches with single hinges.

In an upcoming build, I wanted a nice, detailed, round airlock door with modern parts, inset into the wall, with working hinges.

Here, one version translates out and to the left, modeled after an airline door.

Another version swings out and turns to the left on 3.18-mm bar hinges. This version accommodates an astronaut comfortably in the airlock chamber, but the hinges are fragile.

Another version swings out and turns to the left on Technic pin hinges. This version is more robust, but leaves too little room for the astronaut in the airlock chamber.

If anyone can direct me to similar doors and hinges on existing creations from other builders, I'd be glad to see them. They probably work a lot better than these ideas.
