The reverse depicts Nero’s Colossus, a roughly 120 foot tall bronze statue of the emperor as Sol that was created by Zenodorus for the vestibule of the Domus Aurea, or Golden House, the massive palace constructed by Nero after the fire of AD 64. Its memory was retained in the popular name of the amphitheater constructed by the Flavians at the same site - the Colosseum.

An apparently unique and unlisted issue of an exceedingly rare denomination.
Among the consistent rarities of Roman Imperial coinage is the quinarius, be it gold, silver or billon. The denomination originated early in the Republic as half of a silver denarius, and re-emerged under Augustus as an Imperial denomination for both gold and silver, which leads some researchers to refer to them, respectively, as quinarius aureus and quinarius denarius. Gold quinarii of Augustus and Tiberius are rare, but occasionally are encountered. The same cannot be said of the remaining Julio-Claudians: quinarii of Caligula, Claudius and Nero are very rare. This particular coin seems to be unique, as other published examples - also from his accession year only - depict Victory seated or standing, accompanied with the usual inscription VICTORIA AVGVSTI. Though Augustus had struck anepigraphic gold quinarii at a Spanish mint nearly sixty years before, the flying Victory seems to have no prototype for this denomination.

Description
Copy of a Greek bronze statue of ca. 450 B.C. attributed to Polykleitos
This head is associated with a statue of a nude athlete who probably held a diskos. The famous Greek sculptor Polykleitos sought rigorous, mathematically based proportions in his figures. "Perfection comes about little by little through many numbers" he is reported to have stated. Some idea of his attention to the smallest details can be seen in the precise design of each lock of hair on this head.

Ravenna Musuem
There were two marble fragments found from the Claudian period? that now reside at the Museo National in Ravenna Italy. It could have been an altar or other monument, it was found near or in the mausoleum of Galla Placidia in the sixteenth century. The fragment relief was meant to depict a dynastic statuary group from the Julio Claudian dynasty. Who were these figures and what did they represent?
www.flickr.com/photos/julio-c...14320/sizes/o/
This is the first public relief (monument) to show the imperial family in full portrait frontality. There were republican funerary monuments that showed full frontality, but not of the imperial family. We can clearly see Augustus as Mars (Far Right) idnetified by his hairstyle and pyhsiognomy Augustus is also wearing the "Corona Civicta". (To the left) of Augustus we have Livia as Venus, Eros is on her left shoulder, and wearing a tiara. Her dress is based on Venus Genetrix of the fifth century B.C. (To the left) of Livia we have Germanicus, brother of Claudius. The figure to the left of Germanicus appears to be Drusus the elder, Patriae Claudiu. The seated figure on the (far left) has been identified as either Antonia (mother of Claudius or a representation of pietas.

RIC II 829 (Trajan); Komnick type 67.0, 11 ,Calicó 707; BMCRE 703 (Trajan); Cohen 650 var. (obverse legend).
In 107 AD, Trajan decided to demonetize the precious metal coinage issued prior to Nero's reform in AD 64. This resulted in a substantial gain for the government as these coins that were melted down were of a heavier and purer metal content than those that would replace them. At the same time, Trajan issued a wonderful series of restoration coins of some of the principal types of Republican denarii and a series of aurei honoring Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Claudius, Galba, coins of the Civil War, Vespasian, Titus and Nerva. The aurei are not true restoration coins of earlier types, but instead offer a commentary on the contemporary perspective of the previous emperors significance to Roman history. This coin uses an obverse of Vespasian with a reverse type previously only used by Titus, a pulvinar (cushioned couch) of Jupiter (represented by the thunderbolt), a fitting symbol for Vespasian who had delivered Rome from the horrors of civil war.

Domitian always stood in the shadow of his father and elder brother. Vespasian and Titus had been heaped with military and civic honors throughout their long and distinguished careers. When he became emperor in AD 81, Domitian sought to gain the glory that would equal or exceed that his father and brother had won in the Jewish War, and launched a series of moderately successful campaigns against the Germans and Dacians. This aureus proclaims him as Germanicus, a title he had assumed about a decade earlier, and serves as a memoir of his triumph in AD 89. cngcoins.com reserved.
