Nero. As Caesar, AD 50-54. Æ Sestertius (26.21 g, 7h). Uncertain Thracian mint. Struck under Claudius, AD 51. Bare-headed and draped bust right / Inscribed shield; vertical spear behind. RIC I 108; von Kaenel, Thrakien, Type A, N4.
Latin coins (sestertii and dupondii) in the name of Britannicus, Agrippina Jr., and the young Nero have been found localized in the Balkan region, and were most likely struck at a local mint servicing the legions guarding the border. Only four sestertii of Nero as Caesar were known to von Kaenel: one in the Berlin Museum, one in the British Museum, one in the Bibliothèque National and a fourth that appeared in Sternberg 12 (18-19 November 1982, lot 543). The missing S C is consistent with a provincial coinage not issued under the nominal authority of the Roman Senate. RPC I suggested Perinthus as a possible mint.

Roman, about AD 14-20
Probably made in Egypt
This bust shows the Roman general Germanicus (15 BC - AD 19) in military dress. Germanicus was the nephew and adopted son of Tiberius (reigned AD 14-37), the second emperor of Rome. He commanded the eight Roman legions on the Rhine frontier, apparently with some distinction, recovering two of the legionary standards lost after a military disaster in the Teutoberg forest (AD 9). However, it was mainly among the Roman people, rather than the army, that he commanded most affection. The Roman biographer Suetonius in his Life of Caligula III describes Germanicus' '... unexampled kindliness, and a remarkable desire and capacity for winning men's regard and inspiring their affection.' After his untimely death through illness at Antioch in AD 19 he was elevated to god-like status.
The polished surface of the stone is extremely smooth and glass-like, but this emphasizes the areas of damage on the chest and around the nose. While the latter may have been accidentally damaged, intentional mutilation is visible on the forehead, where a cross has been carved between the brows. Such mutilation, done largely by Christians in late antiquity, often took the form of crosses or random gouges on the brow, eyes or lips of statues. Religious fanatics thought that such marks were the only means of keeping at bay the demons which they believed to haunt the statues.
Basalt is commonly found in Egypt and it is quite likely that this bust was made there.

Glass
3 1/16 x 2 7/8 in.
2004.35
Made from greenish-transparent glass, this small beaker or cup features several decorative bands including a wreath pattern, and near the base, a row of chevrons. Below the wreath, an inscription in Greek suggests the beaker's festive function: "rejoice and be merry."
To create this beaker, the glassmaker used a three-piece mold. Because the seam of the mold was not completely tight, some of the molten glass seeped out of the mold. As was common practice, the glassmaker incorporated the mold mark into the design in order to better conceal it. The Romans introduced the technique of inflating glass into molds in the early first century A.D. and this technique has been used continuously in glassmaking centers around the Mediterranean.

The obverse of this coin honors Poppaea, Nero’s (and previously Otho’s) wife. In January of AD 63, she gave birth to Claudia, who survived only four months. This is the only coinage issued in the name of Nero’s daughter. According to Suetonius, Nero killed Poppaea, while pregnant with another child, by violently kicking her in the abdomen.

C. Cassius Longinus. Early 42 BC. AR Denarius (17mm, 3.91 g, 6h). Military mint, probably at Smyrna. P. Cornelius Lentulus Spinther, legate. Tripod surmounted by cortina and two laurel branches, fillet hanging on either side / Capis and lituus. Crawford 500/1; CRI 219; Sydenham 1308; RSC 7.
C. Cassius Longinus was one of the principal conspirators against Julius Caesar. Following the assassination, he moved to the east, where he sought to amass an army. His prior reputation of military success against the Parthians while governing the province of Syria proved invaluable, and by 43 BC his army boasted nearly twelve legions. He was able to stave off Antony's general Dolabella, secured his base in Syria, and begin preparations for an invasion of Egypt. At the same time, Antony, Octavian, and Lepidus formed the triumvirate, and this posed too great a threat to ignore. Cassius' halted his impending invasion of Egypt and moved west to meet up with Brutus forces at Smyrna. The two regicides agreed to take joint action against the triumvirs, and began by attacking their allies in Asia. The following year, having successfully secured their rear in Asia, the pair moved into Thrace, and chose a position outside Philippi to meet the approaching army of Antony and Octavian. Brutus moved against Octavian with great success, capturing the young Caesarian's camp, but Cassius' army was routed by Antony. Unaware of his partner's success, Cassius thought the entire cause was lost, and had his freedman Pindarus slay him.

A rare look at the brother of Caligula and son of Germanicus. NERO JULIUS. Very Rare.
This exquisite portrait of marble from the Greek islands shows a young man with his head slightly reclined to the left. It may have belonged to an idealized portrait statue, a replica of an athletic or heroic model.
The subject is probably Nero Caesar (6—29 AD), the eldest son of Germanicus, nephew of Tiberius. After the premature death of his father and brother, for a short time Nero was heir designate to the throne, but was then exiled together with his mother, Agrippina the Elder, and nothing more was known about him.

D.W. MacDowell and A.V.M. Hubrecht discuss the countermarked bronzes from the Rhineland in “Countermarks on the Aes of Claudius from Nijmegen”, Proceedings of the XIth International Numismatic Congress, vol. 2, pp. 265-7. There appear to be three distinct variations of the TI AV countermark. One appears solely on asses of Agrippa, and is probably contemporary with the reign of Tiberius. The other two are found on aes of Caligula and Claudius, and are localized in Upper Germany and the lower Rhine. MacDowell and Hubrecht conclude that the countermarks at Nijmegen were applied to lightweight products of a local mint, and indicated the coins were to be accepted at the full weight standard of the Rome mint issues struck under Tiberius (hence the countermark, TI[berius] AV[gustus]).
