Following the battle of Thapsus in the spring of 46 BC, Julius Caesar returned to Rome to celebrate a series of triumphs. That September, Caesar set out for Spain in what would be his final campaign. Here the sons of Pompey the Great, Cnaeus and Sextus, had rallied the remains of the African forces to make one last stand against the victorius dictator. The forces met at Munda in March of 45 BC and the Pompeians were defeated, thus ending the first series of civil wars. Cnaeus was captured and executed, but Sextus escaped and survived to become a problem for the Second Triumvirate. This coin was issued by Marcus Poblicius, legatus pro praetore to Cnaeus, to pay the legions under his command in Spain.

Bridle ornament inscribed PLINIO PRAEFECTO, found at Castra Vetera legionary base (Xanten, Germany), believed to have belonged to Pliny the Elder (AD 23-79) when he was a praefectus alae (commander of a cavalry regiment) in Germania Inferior (52-54). Pliny was a hereditary Roman knight of the imperial era who became celebrated for his writings on natural history. He had also a distinguished career as a public servant, in a series of posts reserved for equestrians: he served as a military officer in ca. 44-54, as procurator Augusti in two provinces in the period 70-77 and then as a secretary of state in Rome to his friend emperor Vespasian. By 79, he was praefectus classis (admiral) at Misenum in the bay of Naples. In that year, the nearby volcano Mt Vesuvius erupted, burying the surrounding towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. From his base across the bay, Pliny led out his fleet to rescue survivors trapped on the shore beneath Vesuvius. But after reaching port at Stabiae, he was prevented from putting to sea again by a strong inshore gale and, while awaiting a change of weather, Pliny died on a nearby beach from inhaling toxic gases.[1]. CAPPADOCIA, Caesaraea-Eusebia. Claudius. AD 41-54. AR Didrachm (20mm, 7.62 g, 12h). Laureate head left / DE BRITANNIS in exergue, Claudius in triumphal quadriga right, holding scepter. RPC 3625; Sydenham, Caesarea, 55; RIC I 122 . courtesy cngcoins.com

The didrachm was introduced during the reign of Claudius. The reverse type portrays a powerful piece of political propaganda; namely, Claudius returning triumphantly from Britain.

It was begun by Caligula on the property of his mother Agrippina on the Ager Vaticanus (today's rione of Borgo), and finished by Nero. The circus building's alignment is the same on the same axis as both new and old St Peter's to the left as you look at the western front from the piazza.

LYDIA, Tralles. Vedius Pollio. Legate of Asia, circa 29/8-27 BC. Æ (18mm, 6.90 g, 12h). Menandros, son of Parrhasios, magistrate. Bare head of Vedius Pollio right / Laureate head of Zeus right. RPC I 2635; SNG München 718; SNG Copenhagen 688; BMC 76-8

An equestrian and confidant of Augustus, Vedius Pollio seems to have had an important administrative career, serving in the restoration of a proconsular government in Asia and possibly even in the refoundation of Tralles as Caesarea. However, his personal cruelty, especially toward slaves, more than matches his public deeds, as he is said to have thrown slaves with whom he was displeased into a pool of lampreys which he kept for such acts. cngcoins.com

A large rhyton and four bowls or cups form a group of silver vessels. The rhyton and bowls were made around the same time, but they come from different areas of the Near East. While most of the vessels are Parthian, the deep cup with relief decoration appears to have originated in Bactria. In the first century B.C., the main East-West trade route ran through Bactria and Parthia. The cup, therefore, probably reached Parthia as a trade item. Although the vessels were not made as a set, they appear to have been gathered together in antiquity, not just assembled by a collector in modern times. The green oxidation pattern on the horn of the rhyton suggests that it was buried with the shallow bowl upside down on top of it. The vessels formed part of the tableware of a rich nobleman. These were drinking vessels, which he would have used on special occasions with similarly elaborate serving vessels. This silver may have been buried with the owner upon his death, or the pieces might have been buried as a hoard in a time of danger and not subsequently reclaimed.
