The recipe here called for everything to be diced and cooked together. My instinct was that I should create a base, blend it, then add slightly larger chunks for a pleasantly smooth+chunky feel. I should've trusted my instincts. The feel here was "small bits" which isn't ideal. The flavor was ace, though.
C+
Simple and far less fattening than most cream soups.
2 large baking potatoes - peeled and diced into bite sized pieces
3 carrots - diced
3 stalks of celery with leaves - diced
1 medium white onion - diced
1 can yellow kernel corn (drained)
kosher salt to taste
fresh ground pepper to taste
powdered vegetable soup and seasoning mix to taste (I use Osem)
1% milk - enough to cover veggies
Melt two tablespoons butter and add potatoes, carrots, celery and onions and saute until onion is translucent and then add corn. Add salt, pepper, powdered vegetable soup and milk. Stir well and reduce heat to simmer, cover and let cook 1/2 hour to 45 minutes, stirring often (do not let milk scald to bottom of pan).
Using baking potatoes will thicken the soup nicely as they break down well.
Manhattan Clam Chowder
($6.50)
Read about this lunch at Joe's Stone Crab Restaurant on my blog: "review: joe's stone crab..."
Notes: Not bad for a Southern try at a Northern favorite. *wink* I'm just kidding. This was actually avery nicely done bowl of clam chowder. The broth wasn't over-salted, sweet from the tomato, and rich with the sea fragrance of the clam meat. The clam meat was tender, not many chew or tough pieces. The vegetables, especially the potatoes, were a delight - still holding their structure and texture.
And now for your daily dose of cuteness ...
Meet our family's newest addition; "Chowder." Born in a litter of five rascally little varmints, here he is posing for his first portrait at 8-weeks-old, just two days after we brought him home.
Is it difficult to get an energetic puppy with the attention span of a squirrel on Red Bull to pose like this? Not if you have lots of patience and expect 50 throw-aways for every good shot! :-)

FlaT Lay
I have been wanted to recreate this Flat Lay image ever since I came across the Fictitious Dishes book by Dinah Fried. I liked it so much I bought the Kindle version. I want to do more!
I grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts and am a New Englander no matter that I have lived in Raleigh, NC now for 20 years! One thing I know is good New England Clam Chowder (or Chowdah). Don't try to add things to such a simple recipe. And I prefer it without bacon. It was hard to get good chowder when we lived in Omaha, NE and then in Raleigh for many years. Then someone opened The Nantucket Grille. Their chowder was pretty good and you could get whole belly clams. But now we have Cousins Food Truck. They specialize in New England Lobster Rolls and have the best Clam Chowder. So, almost don't have to go north anymore!
So, I put my chowder in a bowl made by Bennington Potters in Bennington Vermont. This is their famous splatter pattern in Morning Glory Blue. The soup spoon is from my Mom's silver. Do you know that they don't make soup spoons like this anymore! The Westminster Baker's Co. founded in 1828 was originally in Westminster, MA. They have moved to Vermont, but nothing has changed in their recipe! My friend grew up in Westminster and he said that had a barrel out front with broken crackers! The shells probably came from Newport, RI or from Maine. I don't remember where the sea glass came from.
So, this week I took photos on the floor of the master shower (I sense a bathroom theme). It is real stone - flat. It is a roll-in shower. I couldn't have lunch until I was satisfied with my layout.
I added the text that Dinah Fried used in her Moby-Dick photo. I added a stroke border using the Marquee Tool in PS and used Topaz Studio 2 to add the Imperial Ash and Cool Contrast looks. I added a Katie Pertiet border.
There are a lot of great photos this week. Thanks Ricky for using this idea!
