chipmunks construct extensive burrow systems, often more than 3.5 m in length and with one or more well-concealed entrances.
chipmunks eat a wide variety of seed, fruit, and nuts. they are also fond of corn and sunflower seeds. in the autumn they may store as much as seven litres of food for winter use. the scientific name, tamias, means 'steward' in latin. preyed upon by hawks, foxes, and weasels, they may also fall victim to domestic cats.
this one i discovered very close to the mount rushmore national memorial.
Chipmunk - Eastern chipmunk (Tamias (Tamias) striatus)
I did not know this.... The genus name Tamias is Greek for "treasurer", "steward", or "housekeeper", which is a reference to the animals' role in plant dispersal through their habit of collecting and storing food for winter use.
This little hungry chipmunk posed for me for a long time so there are lots of photos available in this set.

Yellow Pine Chipmunk taken in Manning Provincial Park, British Columbia, CA by David.
This little girl came running up to me and then stopped about five feet away looking for a hand out. After a few seconds when none was forthcoming she quickly bolted away to explore other opportunities.
This photo was taken about ten minutes after a small sprinkling of rain had passed through and the mini storm left this little girl with an extra sparkle (see note.)
