He showed up eagerly in Dupont Circle at rush hour, hoping for a pick-up chess game, but no, everybody just walked on by him.
The first warm spring day of 2012 in Galway, Ireland :-)
I was lucky enough to have the entire day free to enjoy the wonderful weather. As I had a few bills to pay and grocery shop to do, I headed into town in a fabulous mood (mundane jobs are so much more fun on a warm day!!) I am not sure why, maybe it is 'growing up', but I was saddened to see so many people sitting outside pubs drinking (happily, and having fun, but nevertheless) that can be done at any time (granted, maybe not sitting outside, but you know!) But as I walked out of town and towards the sea shore, there was a totally different atmosphere. One of the nice things I came across was a group of people playing chess, with large chess pieces! I sat and watched for at least an hour, and when each game was completed a new person walking past would join in! This is what summer time is all about, meeting people and having fun...and guess what...it can be done away from pubs!!! :-)
Have a wonderful weekend Flickr friends ;-)

New challenge 172 ~ Chess game
There was a time I played chess with real players. I was always looking for others I could play with and that could be a headache when I was on holidays or travelling. Now, you don't have that problem, since you can play it "on-line", even chess became virtual... It is not the same thing, but it will help keeping you entertained and develop your own strategies...
I must say that my virtual partner is the winner now (I was not playing chess for a couple of years) and I am almost tempted to buy something to improve my performance. I'm hesitating between a virtual chess mentor or virtual gym for the brain... :))

This may go over people's heads, but what the heck. The picture is of the critical position in the game that I consider my best ever competitive chess game, played in 2000 in the Welsh Under-1500 cup. I have the black pieces, and it is me to move in the diagrammed position. White threatens checkmate on h7 and the white bishop on g4 is exposed to capture as well. It is not possible to defend against both threats, at least not directly.
I won the game from this position, though I had to think for 25 minutes about my move first.
The moves, for those that understand chess notation, are below. The standard isn't great, as I have never been that good at chess, but I am still proud of this game.

"Chess Game on Bank Street"
I want to take a photograph of this man whenever I see him. However, I just don't have the "balls" to approach him; he is one of the "tough" ones on Bank Street.
On this day, he was sitting on the sidewalk watching the chess players. I spotted a photographer taking photos of him from afar with a telephoto lens ... can't do that with my TLR camera!!!
I overcame my hesitation and approached him. Just by coincidence a girl was dragging a bicycle with a pretzeled front wheel. We both looked at her and her bike in awe!
"Shit! What happened?", I asked.
"I was hit by a car!", she said.
The man and I began conversing with the girl and talked about how dangerous the traffic is on Bank Street. This coincidence of the girl appearing enabled me to connect with the man and later took a few photos of him. To my surprise as well, he is actually quite an approachable person, friendly and talkative.

There are several of these tile-decorated, concrete chess stations in the center island on the 16th Street Mall in downtown Denver. Located near the center of its (approximately) two-mile length, a few offer some shade from the morning sun.
I always enjoy seeing these HUGE, oversized chess boards. Funny, I never see anyone actually playing a game, though.
This one was seen at the outdoor food court at Callaway Gardens during our yearly visit to see the Christmas lights.
my creative take on this real urban life chess game I watched and photographed in Granada :) Sorry can't do a fresh image for Sliders Sunday since I am on the road. So this one from last Thursday must do. Happy Sliders Sunday!
The beaches of Huguenot SP were full of shorebirds as they hunkered down in the rainy, foggy, windy weather. It was a constant chess game as different species would all take off at once and move to another spot, causing a chain reaction. Awesome to watch, but finally too cold and wet to still be fun!
Hope everyone has a great week. I'll be traveling and will try to catch up quickly when I get back. I really appreciate all your views and comments....and totally enjoy seeing and commenting on all your wonderful photography!

Taken at one of several Six of One conventions at Portmeirion that I attended to celebrate the Prisoner television series. I still have the jacket and was wearing it only yesterday for my weekly pub visit. The brolly was on loan for the photograph. Later that day we renacted the human chess game on the village green!

LOMO is a term of photography that based on these characteristics :
1. inspiration base - click the button when ever you feel that if you miss it you will be feel sorry for the rest of life
2. no rules - forget about those technical thing like this lens is portrait len. using macro lens for flowers. etc.
3. imperfect is perfect - never think of perfection. nothing is perfect.
4. sureal feel - if is is realistic it will become photojournalism I think :D
5. unpredictable - so LOMO shot is always films and low tech camera and never digital cause you can see the picture before shoot in digital.
6. post process is not prefered - if you try to precess it, you try to make it perfect and not your inspriration.
7. it is all about photographer - just click for the one who click. It show what you are than what you are shooting. It may very thoughtful or very non sense. Depend on the one who click not have to be always non sense.
these are LOMO shot for me, just a very personal think and unacculated. But if any shot fall into these 7 rules, I personally call it the LOMO shot!
