We don't have the heart to make R stay on leash absolutely constantly until his surgery so we "cheat" and let him run a bit. The top canine elbow surgeon is in New England, and he's flying out here to operate on R in April (no firm date set). R will have new articular surfaces implanted in his elbow. It's an "end game" salvage procedure because all of the cartilage is gone due to a congenital defect. Anyway, we are doing are best to balance managing R's elbow and managing his spirit! That's why he's running in the snow in this photo!
Bit of a cheat - this is in Edinburgh Corporation days but the scene remained the same.
I have been goaded into posting this by Stuart Montgomery, and in retrospect I'm glad. This drab autumnal scene at the Lochend terminus of ECT service 13 shows a bleakness that takes me right back to those days. This could so easily have been the 1950s with the country still shattered by the exertions of war, rather than, as it was, 1975. The grey/brown housing might have been any Scottish urban area.
This got me to musing about liveries. In this drab setting, the municipal solemnity of the madder and white stands out well and actually livens the scene a little. One could equally well imagine a green Dundee or Aberdeen bus, or a green and gold Glasgow one, fitting in just as well here. And while this was the kind of background they had to contrast with, those kinds of livery were appropriate.
But now in Edinburgh the buses are trying to stand up against the multicoloured delights of national chains of shops, more cars than one could have imagined in those days, brighter clothing, bike lanes painted on the road - and so need their brighter colours to maintain a presence. Neil Renilson, all is forgiven!
This solitary bee is trying to pull nectar out of the side of a flower instead of going in from the front. They don't instinctively know how to feed and sometimes they learn to get to the nectar without pollinating the flower.
Tech specs: Canon 40D (F14, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MPE-65mm macro lens (@2x) + a diffused MT-24EX (-2/3 FEC). I had to do a lot of cloning to get rid of some very distracting leaves in the foreground.
