I am so enamored with the warm color palette seen along the Artist Palette drive in Death Valley. Everywhere I turned, the setting sun was painting a new canvas.

A painterly sky - a piece of nature - joins a city scultpture - a piece of human. The contrast between defines shapes and textures and a bit of depth. Abstract, just for the fun of it.

Stunning light stopped me in my tracks and fixated me. An ordinary scene made extraordinary by the brilliance of the sun. Painted shadows play with abandon. Building facade is revealed in stark detail. Lacy patterns of tree branches adorn. Removal of color also removes distraction. B&W lets me see the elements in all their glory.

When I yearn for the sun and the sand, I head to the archives ... especially in December. This was taken at sunrise on Lake Michigan. The October sun was magnificent that day!!

I saw the potential for an epic sunrise yesterday morning as I looked out my back window ... I had only 40 minutes (before taking Jack to the train station) so I was racing around my area trying to find a good vantage point. The outlet mall was a depressing place to watch it rise. *heavy sigh*

So frustrating ... to envision how breathtaking it would have been if only ... I had been anywhere else but here ... in Aurora!! So I will content myself this morning with memories of sunrises past!

Happy Fence Friday!

Solitär - from my photo exhibition "Arctic Horizon"

I had nearly always luck with the weather on my trips to the north. But even it the light is dull and there is not structure in the sky it is easy to find great things to photograph.

I took this photo on a hike to Smoerdalskammen, Lofoten, Norway.

Auf meinen Reisen in den Norden hatte ich

bisher immer großes Glück mit dem Wetter.

Aber auch wenn das Licht einmal nicht

mitspielt – Motive finden sich immer. Dieses

Bild entstand auf einer Wanderung auf den

My favorite woods never disappoint. Though at first, the thick fog did not hold promise for sunbeams. I stuck around and I'm glad I did! Hope everyone is ready for Halloween!

WInter version of this.

While searching my archives today I came across this long exposure. I remember this evening very well.

I take so many photos, and so many of them are overlooked, lost & forgotten. I need to stop taking photos!

Silly me. That's not ever going to happen!

Happy Monday!

One of the many corridors at Camp 30. It is an eerie feeling wandering through some abandoned buildings.

I scouted this location on December 19th, 2020, and returned the next afternoon with both film and digital cameras. I was given an early Christmas present with the fantastic scene that unfolded around me. Many different bird species use this area as a stopover going south for the winter. I have not received my film rolls back from developing. I find it hard to believe that any of those images will surpass this particular digital shot: especially considering the demanding dynamic range and color of this sunset scene. We shall see in the next few weeks when the film scans arrive.

What an incredible, warm evening followed by this delicious sunset. I certainly had my fill of sunshine and ice cream tonight. :)

Just when I think I've finished shooting, this scene looms in the windshiel and demands attention. Trees rise into warm mists creating vertical pull for the landscape orientation. Lovely diagonals repeat and then repeat again as fir tips form patterns of delicate design. Dark against light gives contrast that contributes to mood.

I have to warn everyone, I am in a beach mood this week!! The best place in the world to be, is right here on a beach, digging toes in the sand and watching the sunrise. That there was a fence off to the side was an amazing coincidence!! And a heart carved on the fence post? Serendipity!!

Thanks SO MUCH to everyone's wonderful comments and dedication posts for my 50th birthday yesterday. The slide into my next decade wasn't as traumatic as I thought it would be!!

Happy "Sunrise" Fence Friday!!

A parked bike shows off its silhouetted echo in rain soaked concrete. Circles duplicate and a bold vertical line anchors. Blue and gold hued concrete serves as negative space. Lines scramble a bit adding visual pathways and interest.

I love dramatic sunrises. But sometimes, a gentle sunrise gradually fills the sky like this one. I wish I had the words to express how a sunrise like this makes me feel. Since I don't have the words, I'll let the image speak for me.

A couple of weeks ago I took part in a B&W print workshop at The Photo Parlour in Nottingham. With tuition and guidance from master printer John Blakemore I was able to produce a couple of prints from my New55 negs. I had an amazing time 😄

In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous

Giant statements of an architects imagination come to life rise on city streets just waiting for admiration. Grids of patterns decorate the beautifully lit buildings. Reflections, including the source of it all, dance in glass against a field of blue. Nice drama with the slight cant to the right. Spatial relationships are a secret in the urban fragment.

A view from Zabriskie point at Death Valley National Park. I took this shot in the morning as the rising sun was lighting up the folds and faraway mountains. Morning sun over the Zabriskie point is an absolutely religious experience and it’s something everyone should witness at least once in their life. The badland formations and the texture of and hues of the landscape is beyond amazing as the golden light gets there just becomes outright stunning. Thanks for visiting hope you enjoy the pics…
