Kayaks for the Sebago Challenge volunteers aligned on the sandbar at the start.

The Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild participated in the Robert Kaufman Kona Charm Challenge. We got the dark colourway. When describing what I was intending to do - I mean doesn't everyone take a charm square, cut it into 6 pieces and then sew them back together? One of my guild colleagues proceeded to tell me that "There's medication for that you know", which I just howled at, and so it became the name of this quilt.

The quilting is not yet finished, but I'm still hoping to have it done before we leave on vacation - very simple zigzags, so if I get a chance, shouldn't take too long to do. Finished quilt will be ~50"x60"

ORLANDO, Fla. - Soldiers from the 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) joined their active duty and Reserve Officer Training Corps brothers and sisters in welcoming tens of thousands of spectators to the Florida Classic, one of the nation’s largest football rivalries between two historically black colleges: Bethune–Cookman University and Florida A&M University.

In the hours leading to the opening kickoff Nov. 19, 2016, at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla., the Soldiers helped members from the Army Marketing Research Group encourage BCU and FAMU fans to test their strength, endurance and mental aptitude in various interactive activities featured at the Go Army booths. The troops motivated men and women from all walks of life to set personal records for planks, pullups and pushups. They also lent a hand in several creative challenges that emphasized teamwork and critical thinking.

Many of the thousands of fans who waited for their turn to don blindfolds, solve puzzles or perform pullups spoke with the troops about their training, experience and aspirations. While these casual conversations opened opportunities to introduce potential recruits to the Army’s robust enlisted and Reserve Officer Training Corps programs, they also fostered greater respect and understanding about the Army’s role in developing strong communities and mutually beneficial partnerships both at home and abroad.

The fans’ energy, enthusiasm and camaraderie also demonstrated that the Florida Classic and the U.S. Army share common values. Their sincere interest in learning about the Army’s vision, capabilities and career opportunities exemplified how rivalries on the gridiron can shape resilient individuals who possess the character qualities to lead and mentor men and women on the battlefield.

Several Soldiers received complimentary access to the field during the game. Army Master Sgt. Shantell D. Aviles, noncommissioned officer-in-charge, Office of the Inspector General, 143d ESC, watched many Florida Classic football games during her childhood and teenage years. Although she and her family were no strangers to seeing the game from the stands, Aviles had never before set foot on the sidelines. With a smile never left her face, she took full advantage of the exclusive press pass to take photos with the mascots, shake hands with the drum majors, and cheer her FAMU Rattlers from the endzone.

This week's challenge was to create a card with a basque (corset). I crocheted the basque (corset) with crochet string and my tiny, tiny hook. I added beads to simulate the "bones" in the corset and some ribbon bits for the straps. I added a vintage image, gathered lace for the skirt, rubber stamped and inked the scrapbook paper background.

It took me a while to decide how to start this challenge. I started with a 'Dansk', but then what, I needed to put my spin onto it. I've always liked 'warts and wobbles, and wanted to add 'Florz' somewhere....it worked out well as I had some white space in the centre so the 'Florz' was the connecting pattern.

Thank you for looking - your comments are always welcome :)

Geological Research vessel, Glomar Challenger, here we were approaching the first drill site after leaving Abidjan, Ivory coast. February 1975.

The image shows the acoustic beacon ready to be released at the drill site.

On top of the beacon assembly is a ring of glass spheres enclosed in protective plastic covers to keep the top of the beacon facing the surface of the ocean, an anchor kept the device in place on the ocean floor.

After dropping the beacon the ship continued on it course for about twenty minutes then a 180 º turn was executed that brought the ship back to the site, by then the beacon settled on the ocean bed and emitted an acoustic signal every 10 seconds. Four Hydrophones below the ship picked up the signal and the positioning computer evaluated that info and send signals to the electric propulsion systems, consisting of the main propulsion bow and stern thrusters to maintain position over the drill site.

And this shoe shaper could be a prehistoric skull....

this would have to be one of the hardest challenges that I have done so far - I tried to capture smoke images inside and outside, with lamp light and sunlight, with natural light and coloured light - here are the best (not at all that great) of my results (not counting the really bad failures)

7 in this series - please feel free to check out my other images

Members of Company H, 2nd Platoon, 4th Squad make it to the top of Mine Torne Hill to complete the Hyde Challenge. The Hyde Challenge tested the new cadet regiment on all their Cadet Basic Training skills in a squad-level competition Aug. 5-7. New cadets and their squad leaders were evaluated on individual and squad ability to shoot, move, communicate, survive and conduct nighttime operations. Among the tasks in this fully-tactical field environments, new cadets were tested on weapons assembly and functions checks; Soldier First Responder medical skills; land navigation; react to improvised explosive device scenario; and a marksmanship course. The final maneuver for the squads was a hike up Mine Torne Hill to the location where a memorial for fallen comrades was erected. The Hyde Challenge is named in honor of 1st Lt. Daniel Hyde, a Class of 2007 graduate, who was killed in action March 7, 2009, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Here it is!

I love this picture! He is like superman! I cannot believe how high he jumps!

You have to wonder these days what new cadets consider to be “fun.” That was the word many from the Class of 2018 used to describe the Zilinski Challenge Aug. 10 at Camp Buckner.

Squads were tested on physical strength and endurance throughout the challenge while graded on several soldier skills they’ve learned during Cadet Basic Training, like donning and sealing a protective mask, land navigation, assembling the radio and calling in for medical evacuation.

Somewhat a departure from previous Buckner challenges that used Zodiacs to get squads around a short course on Lake Popolopen, this time the squad had to low crawl across the beach and head first into the cold, murky water.

They also low crawled and swung through two obstacles at Marne, and completed three others at the Anzio Obstacle Course.

Perhaps the fun was at the Buckner Parade Field where legs buckled and bodies crumbled after a series of physical challenges. First, the Humvee push—about 300-400 meters across concrete and grass, assumably the best of both worlds. Then, imagine all that was left of the vehicle was one, huge tire. The squad had to push that back and forth another sizeable distance. Pushups, buddy carries, flutter kicks and pullups would follow before they were tested on assembling a swiss seat for rappelling.

Welly Nex 43663 1970 Dodge Challenger Trans Am. 116mm long, so about 1:42 scale – this would therefore fit well with Spot-on models, and maybe even the Hong Kong Dinky models of American cars, plus it has a pull-back motor :)
