Billions of Drops in the Bucket: Engaging Women in Water Solutions - CGI U 2013
Clean water shortages—due to pollution, disappearing resources, or lack of infrastructure—affect over 1.6 billion people around the world. Scientists predict that climate change will only exacerbate these conditions, the effects of which are especially acute on women. In most regions of the world, women serve as the primary managers of the local and household water supply and sanitation. Yet women hold title to under two percent of the world’s private land. How could equitable access to water serve as a powerful tool for poverty alleviation and gender equality, and what leadership roles could women have in the water management and sanitation sectors moving forward? This panel will combine environmental policy and project-based expertise to explore how students can take part in initiatives that not only mitigate the effects of water scarcity, global warming, and water contamination on women, but also empower women to serve as leaders for sustainable local, regional, and global water management.

"Once and For All"
4:30 - 6:00 p.m. ET
Location: Grand Ballroom
After decades of progress for women around the globe, there has been a stark reversal of this trend in recent years. Governments around the globe are rolling back rights once taken for granted. Global crises – from the COVID-19 pandemic to climate change – are landing disproportionately on women, in particular women of color and LGBTQ+ communities, and jeopardizing shared gains in economic prosperity and social stability.
Although these setbacks are real, collective action can prevent them from becoming permanent. There are more tools and opportunities than ever before for women across the globe to access education. Studies show women are outperforming men in the classroom, and businesses recognize that their talent pool is increasingly female. Women are gaining roles in leadership positions, while women-owned businesses receive more investment than ever before. Yet critical work remains to restore and advance this progress, with actions for all to contribute. This session will explore how a new wave of female leadership is poised to fight these threats to everyone’s rights and prosperity, and, once and for all, codify a world where women’s rights are human rights.
Speakers:
Hillary Rodham Clinton, Former Secretary of State
Chelsea Clinton, Vice Chair, Clinton Foundation
Marinel S. Ubaldo, Advocacy Officer for Ecological Justice and Youth Engagement, Living Laudato Si' Philippines
Prof. Agnes Binagwaho, Vice Chancellor, University of Global Health Equity
Melinda French Gates, Co-Chair, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Founder, Pivotal Ventures
Dr. Rajiv Shah, President, The Rockefeller Foundation

CGI America 2014
Despite the steady drop in unemployment following the Great Recession, the concept of economic recovery remains a distant idea that is separated from the daily reality of the lives of many Americans. For the estimated one in three Americans who live at—or close to—the poverty line, the case for focusing on economic and social mobility is both personal and urgent. While some see poverty reduction as a philanthropic endeavor rather than a business imperative, economists increasingly believe that upward mobility enhances growth. This session will begin with a presentation illustrating critical trends, and then invite audience members and panelists to participate in a town hall forum in which they will exchange ideas on strategies that can achieve a just, sustainable, and prosperous future.
Remarks:
Raj Chetty, Bloomberg Professor of Economics, Harvard University
Hillary Rodham Clinton, Former U.S. Secretary of State and U.S. Senator from New York
John Hickenlooper, Governor of the State of Colorado
Moderator:
David Gregory, Moderator, “Meet the Press”, NBC News
Participants:
President Bill Clinton, Founding Chairman, Clinton Global Initiative; 42nd President of the United States
Carly Fiorina, Chairman and CEO, Carly Fiorina Enterprises, Chairman, Good360
Sara Horowitz, Founder and Executive Director, Freelancers Union
Monty Moran, Co-Chief Executive Officer, Chipotle Mexican Grill
Darren Walker, President, Ford Foundation

Solutions without Borders: Working with Unlikely Allies - CGI U 2013
In an age of increasing global interdependence, the challenges facing the world require more than economic or technological solutions alone: they also require cooperation, civility, and trust. Countless students and social innovators are working across traditional boundaries of nation, class, religion, and worldview to create transformative social change. Israeli and Palestinian entrepreneurs are partnering to launch a wind power company in the disputed territories; Democrats and Republicans continue to work together to fund PEPFAR and boost the availability of antiretrovirals around the world; and youth living in conflict-ridden zones from Northern Ireland to the West Bank are building unity through the power of sports. Expanding on these efforts, how can students put aside their own agendas, work with unlikely allies, and build more effective partnerships with their commitments? What are the real and even dangerous challenges that arise when working beyond traditional cultural, religious, political, or economic boundaries? This panel will convene notable entrepreneurs and policymakers who are proving the value of cooperation over conflict.

ACCELERATING THE TRANSITION TO RENEWABLE ENERGY: HOW TO SCALE PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS
Renewable energy — including solar, wind, hydropower, biofuels, and others — is at the center of the transition to less carbon-intensive and more sustainable global energy systems. As the world absorbs a global energy crisis from Russia, renewable energy capacity has grown rapidly in recent years, driven by policy support and sharp cost reductions for solar and wind power in particular. This encouraging trend is expected to accelerate in 2023 and beyond, but it will require continued cooperation to address lower-cost energy security. This session will explore where some of the most promising developments are taking place and examine the factors necessary for their success.

LEVELING THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER: HOW TO FORGE INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIPS IN HARD TO REACH PLACES
We have never had more knowledge about or better treatment options for cancer. However, despite these incredible medical advances, cancer continues to claim the lives of more than ten million people each year, in part because these lifesaving treatments are not equitably available to all populations. Mortality rates are declining in the wealthiest countries while lower- to middle-income countries are seeing increased rates of cancer without access to the latest breakthroughs in modern oncology to treat patients. While limited resources are a concern, there are opportunities for wiser investments and increased coordination and partnerships between governments, health policy analysts, and community organizations to begin to bridge the care gap and bring lifesaving treatments to underserved populations and communities.
