Got a certificate from the guys at work for having "gay" music on my iPod. Just because a man likes to listen to Duran Duran, ABC, and George Michael doesn't make him gay.
This is my certificate. It says that I flew over the Nazca lines. My kids and I got one, but my wife and her sister didn’t. That’s because they didn’t get on the plane. Since they’re both Peruvians, you might think they stayed on the ground because they’ve already flown over the other major tourist attraction in Peru besides Machu Pichu. No, they haven’t. In fact, I don’t think anyone in her family has flown over the Nazca lines. That’s because Peruvians don’t have a lot of faith in the tiny airplanes that fly over the Nazca lines. They have a reputation for being old, poorly maintained, overcrowded and with a tendency to drop out of the sky unexpectedly.
On February 25th one did just that. A Nazca Air plane took out 3 Chilean tourists, 3 Peruvian tourists and the pilot.
That was not the airline’s first problem. That same plane had to make an emergency landing on the Panamerican highway in November of 2008. In April of that same year another Nazca Air plane crashed killing five French tourists. Back when the airlines killed the five French tourists, it was called Aero Ica. The government took the decisive step of shutting them down. The airline seems to have paid off a few people and opened up again as Nazca Air. I think they just painted new lettering on the planes one night, and everybody just went back to work the next day. Both companies even had the same owner/spokesman trying to deflect blame. In 2008, the owner tried to blame the crash on one of the passengers saying that a female passenger had pulled on the pilot’s seatbelt. That story didn’t appear in the official report on the crash and no one but the owner’s mother believes it. This time the owner tried to blame the crash on the pilot, claiming he had a heart attack. The pilot’s doctor spoke out saying the pilot didn’t have a history of heart problems.
This is the statement from the owner about the February 26th crash.
“No tengo por qué lamentar la muerte de los turistas chilenos. No fue falla de ninguna de mis aeronaves. Ha sido una falla netamente humana y por eso no lo siento ni tengo que lamentar esta muerte”.
FRANKLIN HORLER. PROPIETARIO DE NASCA AIRLINES (ANTES AERO ICA)
"I have no reason to regret the death of the Chilean tourists. It was not a fault in one of my planes. It was purely a human error and so I don't feel I have to regret that (sic) death."
Franklin Horler, owner Nasca Airlines (previously Aero Ica).
FRANKLIN HORLER. OWNER OF NASCA AIRLINES (FORMERLY AERO ICA)
Sweet huh?
The problems haven’t been limited to Nazca Air/Aero Ica. The small planes from various local airlines frequently made emergency landings on the Panamerican highway. Fortunately traffic is light on that part of the Panamerican highway (it’s only two lanes and you won’t see another car for hours). There is a joke that you can’t catch a taxi on that part of the highway, but if you wait long enough a small plane will eventually come by.
The federal government seems to have actually cracked down. Immediately after the February crash, they closed down the Nazca airport and sent inspectors to decide which planes were safe enough to fly. Out of 48 planes, they cleared 7 for flight. They may have cleared more planes by now. I don’t know. We’ll see how many more crashes and emergency landings there are.

Cooper Vineyards in Louisa, VA, is the first winery on the East Coast and the second in the country to be awarded the fourth and highest, Platinum certification by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
From a Virginia Wine Board Marketing Office press release, “The process of building a LEED platinum certified building was initially more expensive and arduous than co-owners, Jacque Hogge, MD and Geoffrey Cooper, MD expected, but they were able to get financial assistance from the United States Department of Agriculture. “Know that there are grants available to help with the costs of sustainable building projects,” Hogge advises to other potential green wineries. Cooper Vineyards received 2 of the 3 USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development (RD) Rural Energy Financing program) grants awarded in Virginia in 2010 to help with the expenses of their construction.”
Rural Energy Financing program focuses on loan guarantees, loans and grants to agricultural producers, businesses, cooperatives and rural residents for renewable energy systems and to make energy efficiency improvements.
The tasting room and building collects rainwater from the roof; uses low flow water fixtures to reduce usage by 40%; utilizes structurally insulated panels for the roof and walls; heats and cools the entire building using a geothermal system that includes pipes that are embedded in the parking lot; low-voltage LED lighting with daylight and occupancy sensors provide ample light when it is needed; a solar panel array provides more than 15% of the energy needs for the building, and much of the construction materials are from local and recycled material sources. For more information about USDA please go to www.usda.gov, Rural Development and Rural Energy Financing. LEED was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a 501 c3 non-profit organization committed to a prosperous and sustainable future for our nation through cost-efficient and energy-saving green buildings.
