An unused service certificate from the ranks of the Northumberland Fusliers.

It is worthwhile remembering that most soldiers in the British Army didn't really have an "army number" up until 1920, having being given Corps or Regiment numbers instead.

This lead to a confusing duplication, that even now can mislead many family history researchers.

In 1920, the vast majority of British soldiers were given their true, official Army Number.

The blocks initially allotted for the Northumberland Fusliers range from 4256001 to 4334000.

If a Fuslier didn't have this number, it was more than likely he had re-enlisted after having previously been in another Regiment or Corps !!

Certificate presentation 29 July 2013

ORLANDO, Fla. -

Hundreds of Soldiers and family members shared the joy, pride, courage and sadness as five men brought their Army careers to a close during a retirement ceremony held April 19, 2015, at the 1st Lt. David R. Wilson Armed Forces Reserve Center in Orlando, Fla.

Army Col. Kevin M. Sullivan, Army Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Ralph D. Goodwin, Jr., Army Lt. Col. Michael D. Fernandez, Army Master Sgt. Sixto L. Luna and Army Sgt. 1st Class Jason L. Yunker each boasted unique and impressive careers that included numerous combat operations, training exercises and humanitarian missions spanning throughout across the globe as far back as the late 1970s. Their combined experience that culminated to senior leadership positions at the 143d ESC accounted for more than 150 years of dedicated military service to the country.

Army Brig. Gen. Francisco A. Espaillat, commanding general, 143d ESC, led the ceremony as he presented medals to the Soldiers as well as flowers and certificates of appreciation to their wives.

Espaillat relinquished the floor to every retiree whose farewell remarks produced roaring laughter, standing ovations and a few tears inside the packed auditorium.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of Old Glory to each retiree, the singing of the Army Song and a traditional cake cutting.

"Less than one percent of all Americans serve in the [U.S.]military," said Espaillat. "Of those, less than 18 percent retire from the service. It is only right give these men and women a proper retirement ceremony that recognizes the decades of sacrifices they and their families have made for the safety and security of our nation."
